Chapter 1

POV: Elly

I woke with a start, my heart pounding in a rhythm I couldn’t explain. The morning sunlight seeped through the gold and red curtains of my chamber, casting the room in warm, flickering hues. My bed was draped in soft linens, and the faint smell of charred wood lingered in the air, a reminder of the ever-present volcano near the castle. But today, the familiar comforts of my room couldn’t calm the unease gnawing at my chest. Something was different.

There was a pull—a strange, unrelenting tug deep within me. It wasn’t physical, but it was powerful. It whispered to me, calling me outside.

I pushed off the blankets and padded to the window, my bare feet brushing against the cool stone floor. Pulling the heavy velvet curtains aside, I unlatched the window and opened it. The breeze hit my face, carrying with it the faint, sulfuric scent of the volcano. Below me, the sprawling Fire Kingdom stretched out, its golden rooftops and crimson banners glinting in the morning light. Beyond the bustling streets and the castle’s high walls, the land stretched into rolling hills that marked the border.

My gaze lingered there, on the hills. That was where the pull came from. My heart quickened as if it knew something my mind had yet to comprehend.

A knock at the door startled me, and I turned to see Jensen, my guardian, stepping in. His tall frame filled the doorway, his blond hair slightly tousled from the early morning. He carried himself with the quiet confidence of someone who had spent years protecting me.

“Good morning, Princess,” he said with a slight bow. “Breakfast is ready. Shall I bring it here?”

I shook my head. “No, I’ll come down. But first, could you prepare Nil? I want to ride today.”

Jensen’s brow furrowed. “Ride? So early? Is something the matter?”

I hesitated, unsure of how to explain the pull. “No, nothing’s wrong. I just… need some air. Please, Jensen.”

He studied me for a moment, then nodded. “As you wish, Princess. I’ll have Nil ready for you.”

After a quick breakfast, I made my way to the stables. Nil, my sleek white mare, was already saddled and waiting. Her coat gleamed in the morning light, and she nickered softly as I approached. Jensen stood beside her, adjusting the reins.

“Are you sure about this?” he asked, his blue eyes scanning mine for answers.

“Yes,” I said firmly, swinging onto Nil’s back. The pull was growing stronger now, urging me forward. “I won’t go far.”

Jensen didn’t look convinced, but he stepped aside. “Stay within the borders,” he warned, his tone a mix of duty and concern.

I nodded and urged Nil forward, the rhythm of her hooves echoing against the cobblestone paths as we left the castle behind. The hills loomed ahead, their soft green curves beckoning me. The pull grew more insistent with every stride, a magnetic force drawing me closer.

As we reached the top of the tallest hill, I pulled Nil to a stop. My breath hitched as my eyes fell on the figure below. Near a sparkling waterfall, a honey-colored horse with a white mane grazed peacefully. Seated on its back was a man—tall, broad-shouldered, and breathtakingly beautiful. His golden hair shimmered in the sunlight, framing a face that was both strong and strikingly elegant. But it was his eyes that held me captive. Intense green, they seemed to see straight through me, igniting a spark I didn’t know I possessed.

I couldn’t breathe. My chest tightened, and the air around me seemed to hum with energy. My heart raced, the rhythm pounding in my ears. My mouth went dry, and every nerve in my body felt like it was coming alive.

I didn’t need anyone to tell me who he was. I knew.

Prince Philip of the Water Kingdom. The boy from the prophecy. The one I was never supposed to meet.

His gaze locked onto mine, and my world tilted. The pull I’d felt all day roared to life, consuming me. I felt heat flare within my chest, spreading down my arms and pooling in my hands. When I looked down, I saw flames flickering along my fingertips, the heat so fierce it made me gasp. Across the distance, Philip’s golden hair began to frost, the tips turning an icy blue. He ran a hand through it, brushing away the crystals forming there, his movements slow and deliberate, as if he, too, were struggling to process what was happening.

The connection between us was undeniable, electric and overwhelming. My body thrummed with energy, and the flames in my hands grew brighter, hotter. I felt as though my very essence was igniting, pulled into a dance with the power emanating from him.

Before I could think, Nil reared, startled by the heat radiating from me. The movement broke my gaze, and I yanked the reins, steadying her. The pull surged again, but this time, it urged me to flee.

“Wait!” Philip’s voice rang out, clear and commanding, but I couldn’t stop. I turned Nil and rode hard, the wind whipping through my hair as I raced back toward the castle. My hands still burned, though the flames had vanished, leaving only a lingering warmth. My mind raced even faster.

What had just happened? And what did it mean?

By the time I reached the stables, Jensen was waiting, concern etched across his face. He caught Nil’s reins as I dismounted, his hands steadying me when I stumbled.

“Elly, what happened?” he demanded, his voice sharp. “You’re back so soon.”

I avoided his gaze, brushing past him as I replied, “It’s nothing,” before hurrying inside. My mind was a whirlwind, and I needed a moment to breathe.

Jensen’s jaw tightened as he watched me go, but he said nothing, only muttering under his breath as he led Nil back to her stall. Whatever had just happened, I knew one thing for certain: my life would never be the same.

I stood in the study, my heart pounding as I prepared to tell my parents. The room was as regal as ever, its deep red and gold tones shimmering in the sunlight streaming through the tall windows. Shelves lined with ancient books and scrolls towered over the walls, while a grand fireplace crackled softly, casting a warm glow over the polished mahogany furniture. My father sat at his desk, sorting through papers, while my mother was perched elegantly in a chair by the hearth, reading reports.

“Mom, Dad,” I began, my voice trembling slightly. They both looked up, their expressions immediately softening at the sight of me. “I need to tell you something.”

My father’s brow furrowed in concern as he set down his papers. “What is it, Elly?”

I took a deep breath, willing my hands to remain steady. “It happened today. My power… I… I’ve awakened it.”

For a moment, there was silence. Then my mother’s face broke into a radiant smile, her blue eyes sparkling. My father’s expression shifted from shock to pride as he stood and walked over to me, his strong hands resting on my shoulders.

“You… you did?” he asked, his voice filled with both awe and excitement. “What was it like? What emotion channeled it?”

I hesitated, carefully choosing my words. I couldn’t tell them about Philip. Not yet. “I was riding Nil,” I said softly, avoiding their eyes. “I felt… free. Like everything around me faded away, and then… it just happened.”

My mother’s smile widened as she stood, joining my father. “That makes sense,” she said, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “You’ve always been connected to the open air, to the freedom of riding. Perhaps that is your catalyst.”

Catalyst. The word hung in the air, heavy with meaning. It felt better than “trigger”—more fitting for the awakening of something so profound.

“Show us,” my father said, his voice brimming with anticipation.

I nodded, stepping back and holding out my hands. I closed my eyes, focusing on the warmth I’d felt earlier. It didn’t take long. The heat surged through me, pooling in my palms. When I opened my eyes, faint flames danced along my fingertips, flickering with a life of their own.

“Amazing,” my mother whispered, her gaze fixed on the flames.

My father’s hand brushed mine, careful not to touch the fire directly. “And your eyes,” he said, his voice filled with wonder. “They’re red, Elly. Bright red. Just like the fire you command.”

I turned to the ornate mirror near the fireplace and gasped. My hazel eyes were gone, replaced by a deep, glowing crimson. They burned with the same intensity as the flames in my hands. I blinked, and slowly, the fire receded, my eyes returning to their usual warm brown.

“This is incredible,” my father said, his voice reverent. “We must celebrate. The other kingdoms will want to know that the Princess of Fire has awakened her power.”

“A dinner,” my mother suggested, her excitement palpable. “We’ll invite everyone. It will be a grand celebration.”

My heart sank. A celebration meant a gathering of royals. But not Philip. He and I were never allowed to be in the same place together. I forced a smile, not wanting to dampen their joy. “That sounds wonderful.”

My father’s hand rested on my shoulder again, his pride evident. “You’ve made us so proud, Elly. This is a moment we’ve been waiting for.”

As they began discussing the details of the dinner, I felt a pang of guilt. Philip was my catalyst. He was the reason my power had awakened, and yet, I couldn’t tell them. How could I? They’d done everything to keep us apart, to protect us from the prophecy’s dangers.

But deep down, I knew the truth. I would have to see him again. Not just because I wanted to, but because I needed to. He was the spark that ignited my flames, and without him, I wasn’t sure I could ever fully understand or control my power.

The royal study was silent except for the soft crackle of the fireplace. My parents had left moments ago, their joy over my awakening still evident in their voices as they discussed preparations for the dinner. But I stayed behind, unable to shake the weight in my chest.

The flames flickered in the hearth, their light reflecting off the gold accents of the study. I stared into the fire, my thoughts unraveling as the memories of what I’d been taught about the prophecy began to resurface.

The four kingdoms—Fire, Water, Earth, and Air—were bound together by an ancient balance. Each kingdom’s royal family carried the responsibility of maintaining harmony, their elemental powers a reflection of their realm. And at the heart of this balance was the prophecy.

Madelf, the great mage, had foreseen it centuries ago. His words echoed in my mind, the verses engraved in the history of Dardena:

> From the union of four, balance shall reign,

> Fire, Water, Earth, and Air sustain.

> When kings of flame and tide are born,

> A bond of power shall be sworn.

> Through heirs of fire and water’s might,

> A force will rise, both dark and light.

> Together they’ll stand, a kingdom’s shield,

> Or divided, chaos will be revealed.

> A spark ignites when fates align,

> The flame and frost their powers combine.

> Yet danger waits, a shadow’s mark,

> For envy stirs within the dark.

> Protect the heirs, let no harm befall,

> For their union could save us all.

The prophecy was both a promise and a warning. It spoke of heirs from Fire and Water whose bond would forge a power capable of immense good or devastating destruction. My father had told me countless times, “Elly, this power is a double-edged sword. If it falls into the wrong hands, it could bring chaos to all the kingdoms.”

And then there was Kringle. Madelf’s brother, consumed by jealousy and greed, had vowed to prevent the prophecy’s fulfillment. He believed that by destroying the heirs, he could steal their power and claim it as his own. The stories of my christening haunted me. Kringle had stormed into the Fire Kingdom’s grand hall, determined to end both Philip and me before we could even understand what we were meant to become. If not for Madelf’s intervention, I wouldn’t be here.

This was why Philip and I had been kept apart, why I’d grown up hearing his name but never seeing his face. Our bond was dangerous, a beacon for Kringle’s wrath.

But now… now Philip was my catalyst. The one who had awakened my power. The flames I had channeled earlier, the crimson glow in my eyes—all of it had been ignited by him. And that terrified me.

Because if Philip was my catalyst, I would need to see him again. To understand my power, to control it, I would need to be near him. And that went against everything my parents had tried to protect me from.

I clenched my hands, feeling the faint warmth still lingering in my palms. My mind raced with questions I couldn’t answer. How could I develop my power without risking everything? How could I face the truth of what the prophecy demanded without endangering us all?

But those were problems for another day. For now, I had to smile through the dinner, let my parents bask in their pride, and keep my secret buried. I couldn’t tell them about Philip. Not yet. Not until I could figure out what to do.

I stood, brushing my hands against the fabric of my gown, and cast one last glance at the flames before leaving the study. My heart was heavy, but I forced myself to breathe deeply, pushing the thoughts of Philip and the prophecy to the back of my mind.

Whatever came next, I would face it when the time came. For now, all I could do was move forward—one step at a time.
