Summary

Amara has always been a prisoner of her own power. Her frost magic was unforgiving, deadly, and bound to serve the ambitions of Prince Castiel. As his weapon of destruction, she has spent her life extinguishing his enemies, each act carving deeper scars into her soul. When Castiel sends her to the Dragon Isles on what feels like a suicide mission, Amara prepares for what she believes will be her final act of servitude. But instead of death, she finds Kael—a powerful dragon cloaked in fire and secrets. Even more shocking, Kael reveals a shared past Amara can barely believe: he’s the dragon she once froze as a child, the one she loved and believed lost forever. Kael’s return stirs long-buried emotions and forces Amara to confront the person she’s become under Castiel’s control. As the threat of war looms and Castiel’s grip tightens, Amara is forced to choose. Will she fight for the warmth and freedom Kael offers or remain trapped in the cold, destructive path she’s always known?

Prologue: The Frost That Bound Us

The sun hung low, casting a warm golden glow over the sparkling water and craggy cliffs, painting the world in hues of amber and rose. Amara’s laughter rang out like the chiming of delicate bells, carried on the sea breeze and mingling with the rhythmic crash of waves against the shore. Her bare feet sank into the cool, soft sand with every step, but she didn’t mind. The beach had always been her sanctuary, where the ocean’s timeless song calmed her restless heart.

Beside her, a boy sprinted ahead, his laughter a deep, rich melody harmonizing with her own. His black wings spread wide, catching the sea breeze and lifting him slightly as if the earth itself couldn’t quite contain him. Kael’s olive skin gleamed in the golden light, his face alight with unbridled joy. Though his dragon heritage gifted him extraordinary speed and strength, he slowed just enough to ensure she was never far behind.

“Catch me, Amara!” he shouted, his voice filled with playful defiance as he darted ahead. His long tail flicked mischievously, sending a spray of cool seawater in her direction.

“Not fair!” Amara called back, her voice tinged with mock frustration. Her pale eyes narrowed as a sly grin crept across her face. She wasn’t as fast as him, but her gifts were different, subtler, but no less formidable. Where Kael had inherited his father’s fiery power and unrelenting energy, she wielded frost.

Amara reached out as her laughter subsided into a focused hum, her small hands brushing against the sand beneath her. A pulse of icy blue light spread from her fingertips, and in an instant, the warm, grainy surface transformed. The sand hardened into a crystalline sheet of ice that shimmered under the golden light, smooth and slick as glass.

Kael’s eyes widened in surprise as his feet slid from under him. He stumbled, his wings flaring for balance, but the icy surface was too treacherous. He flailed for a moment before catching himself, skidding to a stop with a gasp of laughter. His golden eyes narrowed playfully as he pointed a finger at her. “Cheating!” he exclaimed.

Amara giggled, twirling effortlessly on the ice she’d created, her white hair streaming behind her like a snowstorm in motion. “It’s not cheating if I have the advantage!” she teased, her voice light and lilting as she glided across the frozen surface.

Kael stuck out his tongue but took her outstretched hand anyway, steadying himself on the slippery ice. His heated grip contrasted sharply with the chill of her touch. “You always have the advantage, Amara. It’s not fair.”

Amara’s lips curved into a teasing smile, her pale eyes glinting like freshly fallen snow under the fading sunlight. “I thought dragons were supposed to be strong and invincible,” she quipped, tilting her head.

Kael smirked, his eyes glimmering with amusement. He reached out and ruffled her snowy curls, causing her to squeal and swat at his hand. “We are strong,” he said, puffing out his chest. “But invincible? Not quite. I’d like to see you try to freeze me again, though.”

“Don’t tempt me,” Amara warned, her grin widening as frost crackled faintly beneath her fingertips. “You wouldn’t stand a chance.”

Their banter gave way to laughter, echoing across the shore as the tide crept closer. The two spent hours playing on the beach, their carefree shouts mingling with the symphony of the crashing waves. Together, they built castles in the sand—imposing structures with guards and walls. Amara would freeze them solid with a flick of her wrist, turning the fragile sand into glittering ice sculptures. With his draconic strength, Kael would then gleefully shatter them with the flick of his tail.

The game was timeless, a tradition that had started when they were much younger. Whenever the dragons came to Coldhaven to trade, or her family to the Isles, Kael and Amara would find each other. Their time together was an escape from the duties and expectations of their respective worlds. Though their lives were worlds apart, they shared these fleeting moments of freedom and adventure.

But that day, something was different. The air held a weight it hadn’t before, a tension that lingered in the spaces between their laughter. Neither spoke of it, but they felt a subtle shift like the sea pulling back before a great wave.

Amara’s movements slowed as the sun descended below the horizon, painting the world crimson and gold. She gazed at the glowing edge of the water, her fingers absently tracing patterns in the sand. The familiar ache of the cold inside her began to creep into her chest, as it always did when the day drew to a close. But this time, it wasn’t just the chill.

She didn’t want the day to end.

Kael stopped beside her, his eyes softening as he studied her expression. “Amara,” he said, his voice unusually gentle. The playfulness from earlier was gone, replaced by a seriousness that made her stomach tighten.

“What is it?” she asked, though part of her already knew.

Kael hesitated, his wings twitching restlessly. Finally, he said, “I hear the truce between our people is coming to an end.” His voice was low, barely audible over the murmuring waves, but the words struck her like shards of ice.

“I know,” she whispered, staring at the horizon. The light was fading fast, and the sky was of deepening blues and purples. She hugged her arms around herself, trying to stave off the cold that wasn’t just from within. “But I don’t want to think about it. I don’t want to think about… war.”

“I don’t want it either, Amara.” Kael said, “But the king… he doesn’t care about us. To him, the dragons are nothing more than tools—barbarians to be wielded or discarded. They’ll come for us. They always do.”

Amara nodded. She had heard the stories whispered through Coldhaven, the warnings of encroaching war, of treaties abandoned and alliances betrayed. But no tale could prepare her for the thought of losing Kael.

“I’ll never let them hurt you,” Kael said suddenly, his voice fierce with resolve. His hand reached for hers, his grip firm yet tender, like a tether anchoring her to hope. “I’ll protect you, no matter what happens.”

Tears welled in her eyes, unbidden and unwelcome. She blinked rapidly, trying to banish them, but the sting lingered. “I’ll protect you too, Kael,” she whispered, her voice trembling with conviction. “No matter what.”

They stood there, their hands entwined, as the world around them seemed to hush. The wind howls dipped into a low murmur, and the rhythmic crash of waves became a distant echo. For a moment, it felt as if time itself held its breath, granting them a reprieve from the chaos threatening to consume their lives.

Amara stepped closer to him, her heart hammering in her chest with a force that matched the wild surf beside them. Kael didn’t move, his eyes locked on hers. There was something in his gaze—something that saw straight past her icy exterior, past the girl burdened by powers she didn’t fully understand, and into the core of who she was.

He saw her.

She had always known Kael was different—different from the other dragons, different from any boy she’d ever met. There was a fire in him, a loyalty that made her feel safe even when the world felt like it was crumbling beneath her feet.

Without thinking, without planning, Amara rose onto her toes and kissed him.

The instant their lips touched, it happened.

A violent, uncontrollable surge of ice erupted from her, racing outward in a frigid wave of power. The cold she had fought her entire life to control, the frost she could never quite fully tame, broke free with a fury she had never known.

Kael gasped, his body jerking as the frost engulfed him. His wings, once so strong and vibrant, were coated in crystalline ice, their membranes frozen mid-motion. The frost climbed over his arms, chest, and face, sealing him in a prison of shimmering ice. His golden eyes widened in shock, the last part of him to succumb to the cold.

“No!” Amara’s raw and desperate scream tore through the stillness. She stumbled back, her heart splintering as she took in the sight of him. Kael, her Kael, was frozen solid like a statue, his expression locked in a mix of surprise and betrayal.

She dropped to her knees beside him, her trembling hands hovering over the ice that encased him. “No, no, no,” she whispered, the words tumbling out in a frantic litany. “This wasn’t supposed to happen. I didn’t mean to… I didn’t mean…”

Her fingers brushed the icy surface of his chest, and a sharp pain lanced through her. It was a cruel reminder of the frost she carried within, the curse she could never escape. Tears blurred her vision as she searched for any sign of life beneath the frozen exterior.

“I’m sorry,” she choked out, her voice breaking. “I’m so sorry, Kael. Please… come back.”

The sound of distant roars, sharp and menacing, cut through her grief. Amara froze, her head snapping up as the sky darkened with shadows. The dragons had seen.

They had seen everything.

A cold unlike any she had ever felt seeped into her chest—not the frost she wielded, but a deeper, more insidious chill born of fear. They would never forgive her. The dragons would see her as a threat, an enemy, a danger to their kind.

She looked back at Kael, her dearest friend, her protector, the one person who had promised to stand by her no matter what. Now, he was trapped in ice, unmoving, unreachable because of her.

For the first time in her life, Amara truly feared the cold within her—not just for what it had done to Kael, but for what it had made her. A destroyer and a danger.

As the shadows of the dragons loomed closer, Amara’s heart shattered under the weight of her guilt and the crushing reality of her fate. She had frozen not just her first love but also the fragile bond between their worlds. And now, there would be no going back.
