CHAPTER ONE : NEW HOUSE

It’s a normal day in New York City. The streets are lively and everyone is about their businesses. I stand in my new room surveying it from corner to corner. There is a knock at the door and my dad walks in.

“Hi Gwen, checking out your new room”, he says. “So do you like it?”

“Its fine, but it could use a paint job though”.

“Ok then, let’s head out to a store and get some paint, feel free to pick any color you want”, he says then walks out.

I let out a sigh, my dad is trying, he really is. Despite he works as a police officer like all round the clock he still creates time for me. Moving here was his idea, I still get to go to my same old school though, which is great cause I don’t have to go through the stress of fitting in. He got transferred so it’s not like I had a choice. And about two years ago my mom died. It was hard for both of us. But now everything is good, I still miss her sometimes and I know that dad does to even though he doesn’t show it

“Gwen, come on lets head down to the store fast before the truck with our stuff arrives”. My dad’s voice brought me out of my thoughts.

“Coming dad”, I reply leaving the room.

“So how does it look?”, my dad asks wiping the sweat off his forehead.

I look across my newly painted room with satisfaction, “It looks great dad. Thanks for the assist”.

“No problem”.

Honk, honk. The truck with our luggage arrives. “Let’s go get our things from the truck”, he says motioning to the entrance.

“You go ahead dad, I just wanna tidy things up first”, I say moving towards one of the paint buckets at the corner of the room.

“Ok then, but don’t take too long. We need to get done before it gets dark. Remember you still have school tomorrow”, he says then exit the room.

I bend down to take the paint bucket when I feel something on my hand. I check it out just to find a spider, but before I can shake it off it bites me. It feels like a pinch on my hand so I just shake it off and continue with what I was doing.

Not long after I went to help my dad with our things and after some hours of arranging, we had dinner and then bed time.

“Goodnight Gwen”, my dad says with a smile.

“Good night dad”.

“Sweet dreams”, he says then leaves the room, with my thoughts as my companion till I close my eyes and drift off to sleep.

Leah: The character writing in this is lovely. Everyone feels rich and well fleshed out, even when introduced for only a moment. The main female character is strong willed and quickly witted without feeling cliche or overly “not like other girls”. The world is also fascinating and I can’t wait to learn mo...

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
