Chapter 1 - Test

Angel POV

My foster parent, Janice, left me in the facility where we would get our testing done to see if we were eligible to attend Wayward Academy in the Veil on the Isle of Skye.

For decades, the veil has been open for all supernatural beings to coexist within human society and stay within the veil with their human mates.

We get our blood tested at the age of eighteen, and now that my eighteenth birthday has come and gone, I am getting my testing done.

“Angel Jennings?”

I sighed, feeling my heart race with anxiety, wanting nothing more than to run and never come back, and yet I want this, seeing I have been abandoned far too many times due to my disability.

“This way, Miss Jennings,” the kind nurse said, showing me where to go for my testing.

I walked into the sterile room, and the doctor in question motioned for me to take a seat.

“Miss Jennings, this will take only a few moments.”

I nodded, feeling small and nervous, knowing what they must do to get the testing to be finalized.

The doctor carefully wiped my arm, took some of my blood, and placed the vile into the machine that would help figure out what kind of DNA my genes would match when it came to being a human mate for one of the four communities.

“Miss Jennings, can you wait here? I need to make a phone call.”

I watched the doctor hurry out of the room with haste, and that didn’t bode well for my anxiety.

I sat in my tights and flats, playing with the hem of my worn white dress, letting my unruly, bright, auburn hair fall around my face.

“Miss Jennings, it would seem your results are extraordinary. Especially for one of the most powerful wolf packs, the Red Fang Pack,” the doctor tells me. “I had called the Alpha, telling him about your results and how you are the only one to ever show the DNA for one of their powerful clans within the pack.”

I stared wide-eyed at her, wondering how this was possible, seeing I was an eighteen-year-old orphan with a disability who yearned for acceptance and love. “W-what happens now?”

“Well, the Alpha has sent you to be escorted to Wayward Academy, where you will meet your mate at the annual mating event and start learning your new world as you move with your mate to his pack when the time comes.”

I blinked back, the tears threatening to fall, when a knock on the door rang.

A huge gentleman walked in wearing the Red Fang Pack’s red and brown colours, with a howling wolf on the back of his long coat.

“I am here to take Miss Jennings to Wayward Academy, and I have sent someone to retrieve her belongings.” The man’s deep voice showed authority even with his presence.

I sighed, finally feeling as if my life had taken a 180-degree turn. Now, I had to go forth and find my place among the students at Wayward Academy.

I left the facility running after the large man I now know was Ashe, one of the warrior wolves within the Red Fang Pack.

I thanked him when he opened the back door for me. I sat in the back of the car, looking at my small suitcase, which held all my small belongings, especially Mister Flopsy, my tattered stuffed animal that I found when I was little.

“We will be arriving on the Isle of Skye soon. Why don’t you take a nap? I will wake you when we arrive at Wayward Academy,” Ashe gently told me, seeing my uneasiness.

I nodded, closing my eyes and holding my suitcase tucked in my arms to my chest, not wanting anything to happen to my belongings.

“Welcome to Wayward Academy, and I am the Dean, Lady McAlister.” I shyly smile at the kind woman who I can tell holds herself with high esteem and grace.

“T-Thank-you.”

“You’re very welcome. Please follow me to my office to get started on your paperwork and medical bracelet to help the professors here in our Academy.”

I finally followed the Dean to her office, and when we walked inside, it was warm and welcoming, with dark-coloured tones, many shelves filled with old tomes, and many files safely put away.

I took my seat, waiting for everything to begin. The first thing she did was set up my medical bracelet, which would help all my professors better understand my emotions.

I looked at the small, thin silver bracelet in wonder. Its center had a clear gem that was now glowing with different colours.

“This will tell your professors and anyone around you if you require help, and we will get things set in motion,” the kind Dean McAlister tells me. “Now, why don’t we go over your schedule? I will have someone come and take you to your dormitory.”

We reviewed my class schedule, seeing that I needed to understand my new life within the Red Fang Pack. However, my DNA results have returned, and we don’t know who or which bloodline I am compatible with within the wolf pack.

I lay on my bed in my new room, thinking about how my new life would change, seeing I was now officially within Wayward Academy, learning to live my new life within a wolf pack and waiting on the day of the mating event in the next three weeks.

That will be the day I will find out who I have mated with, and maybe they will love me for me, with my disability included.

Sleep eluded me that first night at Wayward Academy. The unfamiliar sounds of my dormitory—soft whispers through stone walls, the occasional howl in the distance—kept my mind racing. By dawn, I’d memorized every crack in the ceiling above my bed.

When morning light filtered through the stained glass windows, casting prism patterns across my simple room, I finally sat up. My new uniform lay folded at the foot of my bed—deep navy with red and silver accents that marked me as a human mate-to-be for the Red Fang Pack. The fabric was nicer than anything I’d ever owned.

“You can do this,” I whispered to myself, running trembling fingers over the embroidered wolf insignia. “Just be... normal.”

The medical bracelet on my wrist flickered from pale blue to a deeper cobalt—anxiety rising. I took several deep breaths I had learned over the years to calm myself down before I left my dormitory to start my first day at the academy. Start writing here…
