It’s been 108 years since the meteors hit earth. 108 years since you could walk anywhere without a weapon. 108 years since Kaya has aged. When the meteors hit earth, they didn’t affect most humans. However, those close enough to the crash sites were killed or turned into bloodthirsty monsters, slaughtering without rhyme or reason. These monsters and other supernaturally changed humans are called Affected’s. The population dwindled. Civilization was abandoned and forgotten. Kaya remembers all of this painfully well. Now, she avoids Unaffected’s at all costs. Until she is forced to live with them to find the Safe House, a place where she can finally live normally again and try to forget her past. On the way, Kaya learns that humans are in more danger than she originally thought, and if she doesn’t help them, the human race might finally be wiped out . . .

Prologue

Kaya turned her key in the lock and opened the door to her apartment. She took off her shoes, took her hair tie out of her long brown hair, and pulled a sweatshirt on before plopping on her couch and turning the TV on.

Kaya had only been sitting for a few minutes, scrolling through show series, when she heard an explosion. It was far away, but loud enough that she turned off the TV and went to the window. Way out on the horizon was smoke. And fire. Kaya heard a faint whistling sound and looked up to see a meteorite the size of her apartment hurling towards a part of the town about a mile away. On the road, cars were stopping and people were running. Kaya watched in horror as the meteorite hit the earth that had been so normal only moments before. A shock wave rippled across the town, breaking windows and throwing Kaya against the back wall.

The world blurred. Kaya got up and stumbled over to what used to be the window. Down of the street, there was chaos. Buildings were starting to crumble. People were writhing in pain. Then, neighbors Kaya had known for years started changing. Their hands turned into deadly claws, their skin darkened into a deep blue shell, their faces grew monstrous fangs. These people were not human anymore.

Kaya backed away from the window, horrified. Then, regaining her senses, she grabbed her backpack and started shoving the essentials in. Then she went to her kitchen. Kaya opened her drawer and grabbed 3 steak knives along with a bigger sharper knife in their covers and put them in her bag.

Kaya quickly shoved her feet into her shoes, ignoring the strange feeling in her body, and bolted down the stairs, leaving her normal life behind her . . .
