THE NINE NINE TRIAL
The sky hung heavy with ash-gray clouds, as if the heavens themselves mourned what was about to unfold. Beneath the ancient stone pillars of the Crimson Hall, she stood alone, cloaked in tattered robes marked by soot and blood. Her breath misted in the cold air, but her eyes burned with an inner flame no storm could quench.
Selena had taken the Nine Nine Trial
The clan’s murmurs rose like a rising tide, crashing against the silence she held like armor. "She dares to claim the path of the Chosen?"
"Blasphemy. Madness." "This is treason against the old laws."
Elder Rhan, his voice worn by age and contempt, stepped forward. His ceremonial staff struck the marble floor with a deafening crack.
"Speak, outcast," he growled. "Speak, and confess your arrogance. For no one of your bloodline bears the right to face the Nine Nine Trial."
Her chest ached, not from the wounds of the trial, but from the weight of their blindness. She swallowed back the bitterness, her voice steady like the earth beneath her feet.
"I took the Trial not for pride," she began, her voice carrying through the hall like a spark in dry timber, "but because truth has long been buried beneath your fear.
A hush fell. Even the banners above seemed to still ,but Elder Rhan’s scowl deepened. "Lies," he spat. "You seek to raise your name above the laws of our forebears."
Her fists tightened at her sides, blood smearing her palms. She did not flinch.
"You fear what I might find," she said, her gaze sweeping across them all. "You fear the truth of our history. The truth that the Nine Nine Trial guards not glory, but revelation."
Behind the assembly, hidden in shadow, a lone figure watched her with sharp, calculating eyes — a shadow-council member loyal not to the clan, but to an older secret. His lips curled into a knowing smile. "So, she has begun to see," he thought. "But she is still a step away from ruin."
The memory of the trial’s final moment burned fresh in her mind — the cavern of flame, the fractured stone altar, and the vision that had seared itself into her soul:
Her father, kneeling before a hidden relic, whispering words she could not yet understand.
They did not know , they could not know , yet still, they judged her.
"Exile her," someone called from the crowd.
"Strip her of her name!" another cried.
But she raised her voice above their fury, her words sharp as steel.
"One day, you will see the cost of your blindness," she declared. "And on that day, when shadows rise against you, you will remember that I stood here not as your enemy, but as your shield."
They turned their backs on her, as cold and unyielding as the mountain winds. But as they did, she caught a flicker of something in their eyes — fear, yes, but also doubt. A seed planted.
Her journey had only begun.
Turning from them, she stepped away from the Crimson Hall, the fire of her resolve burning brighter than the torches that lined her path. The storm above began to break, and as rain fell in cold sheets, she welcomed it. It cooled her wounds but not her spirit.
"Let them misunderstand me," she thought, a grim smile touching her lips. "For soon, the truth will set their world aflame." nd far in the distance, the ancient relic of the Trial pulsed once, as if it, too, awaited her return.
