Chapter 1: Return Flow
Six months after silencing the flame, Tasha and her partner, Brent, the main character from Lubbock Heat. They enjoy peace—until Malinal returns, seeking a new host. This time, she finds a vessel in an unsuspecting HVAC tech working on the gym’s air system. As his body transforms and he seduces multiple members of Tasha’s wellness circle, including a close friend, Malinal’s, true aim resurfaces: to reclaim Brent's soul by wearing the face of every woman he’s ever desired… including Tasha’s.
Tasha stands in front of a class of 22 women, leading them through a guided breathwork session in the candlelit studio. She’s at peace, glowing with purpose, her crescent mark now faded but tattooed in memory.
Outside the studio, the A/C sputters, clicks, then dies.
“Again?” Tasha groans, stepping out into the hallway.
The front desk girl says, “HVAC company said they’re sending someone new. Said this guy’s a wiz at these systems.”
That morning the company van arrives. Elliot Ramos, 5’11”, late 20s, Pale Skin, Hispanic, lean build, black framed glasses. He wore a company polo, jeans, and steel-toed boots—hair swept back with too much product. He looked like the kind of guy who spent more time optimizing inventory apps than turning wrenches. Friendly, but forgettable.
As he walks past the window, his eyes fall on Tasha. He stumbles slightly.
She barely notices him.
“You the owner?” he asked, glancing up from the dispatch form.
“I’m the founder,” Tasha replied.
He smiled. “Now that’s hotter than anything that could be coming off your condenser.”
She gave a polite chuckle, but her eyes narrowed.
“Just focus on the unit. I’ve got class in thirty minutes.”
“Got it,” he said, grabbing his tool bag.
The night before…
A shadowy figure in a red hooded cloak kneels near the outer wall of the gym, behind a flowering bush.
It’s Malinal. She pulls out a small satchel of blackened seeds, carved with ancient glyphs.
She whispers into the soil:
“Grow fast. Grow twisted. Wrap him in your hunger.”
She presses the seeds into the dirt. They dissolve on contact. The ground shudders slightly.
As she vanishes, thin black roots begin to sprout and crawl like snakes toward the gym’s ground-level HVAC blower unit.
Elliot knelt by the outdoor compressor, inspecting the refrigerant lines and coils. His fingers paused over one spot where the vines had curled too close. He tugged one back.
And that’s when it happened.
The thorn.
Black, sharp, hidden under a curl of dry vine. It pierced his glove and pricked his index finger.
“Geez!”, he hissed, shaking his hand.
Blood welled, just a drop. But the pulse that followed wasn’t his heartbeat—it was something deeper. A low vibration that ran from the vine to the wound and up his arm like an unseen wire.
He blinked hard, dizzy for a moment.
Then… stillness.
He pulled the glove off and checked the skin. Already healed.
Huh.
He stood, shook it off, and walked back inside.
Elliot paused. Watched as Tasha walked by. Something stirred behind his eyes now—hunger masked by politeness.
“You got a good vibe here,” he said.
Tasha didn’t break stride. “We work hard for it.”
“Must be easy with a body like yours.”
She stopped.
“I’m sorry—what?”
He shrugged casually. “Just saying… this kind of heat doesn’t come from faulty coils.”
Tasha’s lips pressed together. “I think you're done for the day. Is the unit fixed? It's still humid in here.”
He raised both hands in surrender. “Hey—just a compliment. I’ll get out your hair for today, but parts are on the way, and I'll be back next week.”
But behind his smile, the spark had taken hold.
It was subtle, like a match struck too softly to flame.
But inside him…
Malinal had found herself some new soil.
