What is a villain…without a hero?
"Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!" I say fast and frantically, but not a single movement is made. Not a single breath is released. I pound the ground and scream. "This wasn't supposed to happen! It was supposed to be us! Us fighting! Us together! You can't leave me now!" My tears stain the torn suit, leaking into her scars. "This can't be how it ends. You said we would be forever. I serve, you volley, right?" I shake her. "I didn't think it was going to be that bad, I just wanted to bang you up a bit. Seeing you bruised, let's me know that you are weak like me. Heck, it lets me know that you still are human. You can't die now. I need you." A tear stains my cheek. "I FUCKING NEED YOU!!!!" My vocal chords vibrate aggressively, as I know my shouting can not bring her back. I was right all along, I am a monster. Only she saw me as something more. I take off my mask. "It was just a game..." I hold the cold hand. "That's all it was meant to be." I squeeze the palm as if she were still here. "Remember? We used to chase each other around, pretend to fight with superpowers. I was always building cool things, and you'd wreck them. I would catch you and go on for hours about my evil schemes, don't you remember? You would always call me Dr. Evil because you couldn't think of a better name. I called you the masked marauder, you didn't even know what it meant." I tear falls as I let out a soft laugh. "You were magical to me." My pathetic smile fades as I stroke her face. "It was supposed to be me." I close my eyes. "I may have been the blasted villain, but you were my hero. I loved you." I let go. The body continues to lay upon the rooftop. I can not bare to open my eyes and look upon her anymore. "You said you wanted to be a hero. You dumbass! Why would you sacrifice yourself in such a way? How could you be so selfish?" I turn towards my machine, I know what I must do. I stand and replace my mask. "This is where we differ, see, a hero would sacrifice their lover for the world. A villain, would sacrifice the world for their lover. Yet, you love this world." A tear falls as I power up my machine. "And I love you. For you to come back, I must leave." I flip the switches to the power modules. "The world will be better without me, no one will get hurt, you won't have to die. You can be alive. I want you to be alive." I grab her corpse and throw it into the machine. I grab the remote and stand in front of it. "I hope you know this is for the best."
I press the button.
The hero wakes.
The hero wakes...
I am obliterated.
The hero wakes, without her villain.
Now, I am the selfish one.
