Chapter 1: Ashes Do Not Sleep

Chapter 1: Ashes Do Not Sleep

There was no light. No tunnel. No warmth.

Only wind.

Neji Hyuga awoke standing—though he didn’t remember rising. No breath filled his lungs. No heartbeat echoed in his chest. But he was alive. Or something close to it.

Around him, the landscape shimmered with impossible beauty and eerie stillness. The ground was made of fine, luminous sand—like crushed moonlight. The sky pulsed with drifting clouds of chakra, weaving like veins through the air, glowing softly in pale blue and violet threads.

He looked down at his hands—unscarred.

The hole in his chest… gone.

"…Impossible."

He activated his Byakugan.

The world lit up with ghostly color—but not the familiar kind. No chakra networks. No muscle lines. Instead, strings of energy drifted freely, suspended like memory fragments. In the distance, something rotted—a dark pulse like tar in a lake of light.

"I died," he said softly. His voice fell flat. The world did not respond.

The Wandering

He walked for what felt like hours, though time here meant little.

The sand hissed beneath his feet like whispers. Trees with translucent bark lined the terrain—tall, leafless things that resembled frozen nerves. Some bore faces trapped in knots of wood—half-formed, eyes shut, lips mid-scream. He avoided their gaze.

He passed a lake made of shattered mirrors. Its surface rippled with visions not his own: a child crying in the rain, a kunoichi holding a lifeless comrade, an old man shouting at a coffin. The moment he tried to focus, the images vanished like smoke.

The air shimmered with chakra. Every breath felt thick, like swallowing memory.

"This... isn't the Pure Land," he said aloud. "This is something else."

Then—a flicker of memory. He paused.

A storm of chakra pulsed overhead. In its glow, Neji saw it: Naruto’s face, wide-eyed. Hinata, screaming his name. The moment of impact. The warmth draining.

He blinked. The memory vanished. He pressed on in silence.

A flicker of motion caught his eye. A figure stood in the distance—unmoving. Just a silhouette.

He called out. No answer.

He approached. The shape dissolved into dust.

Another shape appeared—closer now. Then another, further off. Echoes. Projections.

The pressure in the air grew. Chakra—wrong and cold—pressed against his senses.

Something was coming.

The Enemy Approaches

From beyond a nearby ridge, five spirits emerged.

Their forms twitched and glitched, like memories replayed on a broken projector. Their skin was pale and split, jagged chakra veins snaking through rotting bark. Their eyes were hollow, swirling with black chakra.

Some wore headbands—Leaf. Mist. Sand. Their identities were lost, but their pain remained.

Neji’s Byakugan flared. Deep in their spiritual cores, something foreign pulsed—a fragment of corruption.

"They were shinobi," he muttered. "What… did this to them?"

One spirit screeched and lunged. Neji moved without hesitation.

"Eight Trigrams: Palm Rotation!"

Chakra exploded outward in a perfect defensive dome, scattering them back.

Two rushed him. He struck—

"Gentle Fist: Sixty-Four Palms!"

Sharp, echoing blows landed.

For a moment, he held his ground. They didn’t fall.

They convulsed, cracked, and came again. Their chakra regrew like mold.

More came—from beneath the sand. From within the trees. From the lake behind him.

Neji pivoted. Blocked. Countered. His movements slowed. He was outnumbered. Surrounded. Drained.

Chakra was fading.

"This place… it drains me," he realized. "It feeds on regret."

One spirit tackled him. Another grabbed his arm. Teeth snapped near his throat.

He drove an elbow into one. Kicked another back. But the tide rose.

One leaned close, voice crackling with static and hate:

"He’s watching…"

"It spreads through you…"

A cold shiver ran down Neji’s spine.

Another came from behind. Too fast.

He turned—too slow.

The Inferno Arrival

"Fire Style: Bomb Blast Dance!"

The sky turned red.

A wave of flame erupted behind Neji, engulfing half the corrupted spirits in a roaring wall of chakra fire. Ash rained like soot from a broken sky.

Neji rolled out of the blast radius, coughing.

A figure stepped through the smoke—coat fluttering, Sharingan glowing.

"…Obito," Neji said, venom in his voice.

Obito didn’t flinch. "I’m not your enemy."

"You were," Neji snapped. "You are. I died because of you."

Obito met his gaze, calm and unblinking. "If I came to kill you, Hyuga… you’d already be gone."

Another spirit rose behind Neji—silent.

But someone else was faster.

"Watch your six, kid."

A flash of silver chakra. A trench knife sliced cleanly.

The creature’s head rolled off.

Neji turned, stunned.

Asuma Sarutobi stood behind him, cigarette tucked behind his ear, chakra-coated knives in hand.

"…Sensei?"

"Glad to see your reflexes haven’t dulled," Asuma said with a faint grin. "Still, you’ve got a long way to go in the afterlife."

Together, the three made quick work of the remaining spirits—Neji with grace, Obito with precision, Asuma with brutal calm.

Later — A Fire in the Sand

A small, silver flame crackled between them, fed by chakra threads that burned without heat. They sat in a triangle—Neji, Asuma, Obito—catching their breath, though none of them truly needed to breathe.

"…Where are we?" Neji asked.

Obito stirred the flame with a stick. "The space between life and the Pure Land. The Spirit Realm. It wasn’t always like this. It used to be... peaceful."

Asuma nodded. "Until the war. Until the Ten Tails died. Something bled into the fabric of this place—left a scar behind."

Neji frowned. "You mean that black chakra inside them?"

Obito looked up. "The Karma Scar. A spiritual parasite. It infects souls who died full of pain, rage, or regret. Twists them into something else."

"Why am I here, then?" Neji asked.

Asuma’s voice softened. "Because you died with clarity. You made peace. That kind of chakra doesn’t get pulled under. It gets called back… to fight."

Neji stared into the flame. Smoke curled into the darkness, flickering with faces that vanished too quickly to name.

"…Even here," he said slowly, "we're still at war."

Obito’s voice dropped to a whisper. "No. Here… the war is only beginning."
