Chapter 1
Everyone obeys money, in fact wealth is considered one way to acquire respect, pride and power in most societies, especially mine.
Without money there is no power, or respect. The only valuable thing poor people have, that we the rich fellas lack is love. Some say family.
The DuPonts are currently hosting their usual annual ball.
At events like this, people with status, wealth, power wear expensive clothes and accessories, posing fake smiles to the public and paparazzi.
Unfortunately for me, I am also hosting this ball.
“Ugh, I feel suffocated here” a lady complained.
“You can leave” I replied while sipping wine from my glass. I was tired of her constant huffing and complains.
She stared at me looking offended.
“Who are you?” She asked *scoff* “Learn to mind your business.” With that she walked away.
Rolling my eyes at her stupid behavior, I walked away from the bar to my table.
I am not a fan of fancy parties, crowds or even my family.
My father was seated across discussing with some people, definitely his partners, about business which will only favour him.
Yes, he was that selfish, everyone in this world is. Well, at least in my world.
Tired of being in the midst of strangers, I walked up to my dad.
“Dad” He turned upon hearing my voice.
" Sweetheart....*he turned back to his friends* excuse me gentlemen, just a moment, I will be back.”
He held my waist and walked us to another table far away from his friends.
“Dearest, is there a problem?” He asked, concerned.
“No, I just want to leave.” I replied.
“Why?,But the party is just getting started and your grandfather will not be happy about it.”
“I am tired dad, and you know how hard it is for me to be here”
“I know my darling, but you can’t leave. Maybe if you stayed a bit longer you might find a good catch” he winked.
“Dad, eww” I scrunched up my face in disgust.
" Okay,okay sorry” he laughed.
“I’ll just text Betty.”
“Good idea, she is your best friend, you two can have fun” he kissed my forehead and then smiled, with that he walked away.
I took my phone out of my purse and typed a message to Betty.
~ SOS!!! My house in 30, look gorgeous.xoxo.
I went back to my table, this time staring at every person passing by or seated close to me.
This is pure torture!.
It is one hour already, and no signs of my beloved friend.
I was starting to get irritated, then I felt something or someone placing their hands on my shoulder.
“Hey best” I heard the voice of my friend.
" Really, Betty? You are late” I complained.
“I am sorry” she apologized.
She moved and sat down next to me. She looked absolutely beautiful. Her blonde hair was tied in a tight bun with curled thin strands at the sides, pink lips well glossed, and a simple blue dress.
" Oh, now I know why you arrived late” I smiled.
" You look b....” my older brother cut me off “gorgeous”
Betty blushed, “Thanks James”.
" I hope I didn’t interrupt anything” he asked with a smirk, staring at me.
" Actually, you did asshole. Leave”
Raising his hands in the air ” okay okay, I’ll leave”. Before turning on his heels, he said “I’ll be waiting for you” and then winked at MY BEST FRIEND!.
" Are you sexing my brother?” I asked bluntly.
“Wh...n..n..no, no no.” She answered.
“Betty, be careful. He is a playboy, don’t let him hurt you.”
" He’s not so bad” she defended.
“If you say so”.
Betty is not from a rich-rich family. We call them middle class. She’s the only different person in my life. She’s also very naive and too innocent for my brother.
The night continued with I and Betty gossiping, laughing and drinking.Everyone obeys money, in fact wealth is considered one way to acquire respect, pride and power in most societies, especially mine.
