Chapter 1: The Transfer

The whispers started before the bell even rang.

"He’s from the Zoldyck family."

"I heard he got expelled from his last school."

"Don’t make eye contact. He’ll kill you with a pencil or something."

Gon Freecss leaned back in his seat, chewing on the end of his pen. The chatter was getting louder, almost annoying. He stretched his arms, turned toward the classroom door—and that’s when he saw him.

Silver hair. Cold blue eyes. A black hoodie over the school uniform, earbuds in, face unreadable.

Killua Zoldyck.

He walked in like he didn’t hear the rumors. Maybe he didn’t care. He didn’t glance at anyone, didn’t pause to look for a seat. He just took the last desk in the back corner by the window and pulled out his phone.

Mr. Wing, their homeroom teacher, cleared his throat awkwardly.

“This is Killua Zoldyck, our new transfer student. Be kind, help him adjust, all that.”

No one responded.

Except Gon.

“Hi!” he waved, grinning brightly across the room. “I’m Gon!”

Killua didn’t look up. But Gon could’ve sworn one corner of his mouth twitched.

---

Lunchtime.

Gon had three options:

A) Eat with Leorio and Kurapika.

B) Eat with the track team.

C) Sit next to the strange silver-haired boy with the scary last name and no friends.

He picked C.

“Mind if I sit here?” Gon asked, already halfway into the seat next to him.

Killua didn’t glance up from his phone. “You already are.”

“That’s not a no,” Gon said cheerfully, unwrapping his bento.

Killua side-eyed him. “You always this friendly or just with strays?”

Gon blinked. “You think you’re the stray here?”

There was a pause. Then Killua let out a small, unexpected snort—more breath than laugh, but it counted.

They ate in silence for a few minutes. Gon stole glances at Killua’s lunch—just some chips and a chocolate bar.

“You know you’re supposed to eat actual food, right?”

Killua raised an eyebrow. “I do. This is food.”

Gon grinned. “Next time I’m bringing you something better.”

“You’re assuming there’ll be a next time.”

“I’m always right about these things.”

Killua looked at him for the first time. Really looked. And for a moment, Gon thought he saw something behind the cold mask. Tired eyes. Quiet curiosity. Maybe even a little warmth.

“Fine,” Killua muttered, looking away. “But I hate tomatoes.”

Gon beamed. “Deal.”

After school.

Killua stood on the rooftop, wind tugging at his hoodie. He had escaped up there to be alone, but somehow it felt quieter when Gon was sitting beside him. Not silent—just less lonely.

“Why are you doing this?” Killua asked, staring at the clouds.

“Doing what?” Gon asked.

“Talking to me. Sitting with me. Acting like we’re... friends.”

There was a long pause. Gon’s voice was softer this time.

“Because I want to.”

Killua didn’t reply. But he didn’t leave either.
