Chapter 1: The Transfer
The whispers started before the bell even rang.
"Heâs from the Zoldyck family."
"I heard he got expelled from his last school."
"Donât make eye contact. Heâll kill you with a pencil or something."
Gon Freecss leaned back in his seat, chewing on the end of his pen. The chatter was getting louder, almost annoying. He stretched his arms, turned toward the classroom doorâand thatâs when he saw him.
Silver hair. Cold blue eyes. A black hoodie over the school uniform, earbuds in, face unreadable.
Killua Zoldyck.
He walked in like he didnât hear the rumors. Maybe he didnât care. He didnât glance at anyone, didnât pause to look for a seat. He just took the last desk in the back corner by the window and pulled out his phone.
Mr. Wing, their homeroom teacher, cleared his throat awkwardly.
âThis is Killua Zoldyck, our new transfer student. Be kind, help him adjust, all that.â
No one responded.
Except Gon.
âHi!â he waved, grinning brightly across the room. âIâm Gon!â
Killua didnât look up. But Gon couldâve sworn one corner of his mouth twitched.
---
Lunchtime.
Gon had three options:
A) Eat with Leorio and Kurapika.
B) Eat with the track team.
C) Sit next to the strange silver-haired boy with the scary last name and no friends.
He picked C.
âMind if I sit here?â Gon asked, already halfway into the seat next to him.
Killua didnât glance up from his phone. âYou already are.â
âThatâs not a no,â Gon said cheerfully, unwrapping his bento.
Killua side-eyed him. âYou always this friendly or just with strays?â
Gon blinked. âYou think youâre the stray here?â
There was a pause. Then Killua let out a small, unexpected snortâmore breath than laugh, but it counted.
They ate in silence for a few minutes. Gon stole glances at Killuaâs lunchâjust some chips and a chocolate bar.
âYou know youâre supposed to eat actual food, right?â
Killua raised an eyebrow. âI do. This is food.â
Gon grinned. âNext time Iâm bringing you something better.â
âYouâre assuming thereâll be a next time.â
âIâm always right about these things.â
Killua looked at him for the first time. Really looked. And for a moment, Gon thought he saw something behind the cold mask. Tired eyes. Quiet curiosity. Maybe even a little warmth.
âFine,â Killua muttered, looking away. âBut I hate tomatoes.â
Gon beamed. âDeal.â
---
After school.
Killua stood on the rooftop, wind tugging at his hoodie. He had escaped up there to be alone, but somehow it felt quieter when Gon was sitting beside him. Not silentâjust less lonely.
âWhy are you doing this?â Killua asked, staring at the clouds.
âDoing what?â Gon asked.
âTalking to me. Sitting with me. Acting like weâre... friends.â
There was a long pause. Gonâs voice was softer this time.
âBecause I want to.â
Killua didnât reply. But he didnât leave either.
