Chapter 1
The night Dedi was born, the sky bled red.
Villagers gathered in silence, staring up as a crimson moon hung low over the desert, casting eerie light over the cracked earth. The old ones muttered prayers. The younger ones whispered of omens. But inside a small hut at the edge of the village, a cry pierced the night—not from fear, but from new life.
Dedi’s mother, exhausted and wide-eyed, held her newborn close. He was warm. Too warm. The air around him shimmered as if touched by heat. Outside, wind rattled the walls, but inside, the baby boy blinked at the world with quiet, knowing eyes.
They named him Dedi, meaning “He who listens.”
Even as a child, Dedi was different. He spoke to the stars. He wandered alone into the dunes, whispering to the wind and coming back with answers. Once, at age five, he touched a dying tree—and it bloomed. No one taught him how. The villagers were frightened. Some called him cursed. Others said he was blessed by the spirits.
His grandmother, Maya, believed in him.
"Magic," she told him one night, as they sat under the stars, "is not just spells and tricks. It’s the voice of the world. Most people forget how to hear it. But you, Dedi... you were born listening."
She told him stories of the old days—when fire spoke, when rivers remembered names, and when magic walked in daylight. But all of that, she said, was lost. Buried. Forgotten.
Still, Dedi listened.
And the world whispered back.
One evening, when the wind blew strange and fast, Dedi stood at the edge of the village. He was ten years old, quiet as the desert, eyes fixed on the horizon.
The wind called his name.
“Dedi...”
It wasn’t a voice exactly—but a feeling, a tug in his chest, like a memory he hadn’t lived yet.
He turned to his grandmother. “The wind wants me to follow it.”
She looked at him, then nodded slowly. “Then go.”
And so, with nothing but a carved wooden pendant and the stories of old magic in his heart, Dedi walked away from the only home he had ever known.
He left behind fear, doubt, and the safety of the known world.
Ahead of him waited the Valley of Whispers.
And something ancient that had been waiting too.
