Rain slicked streets glistened under the dim glow of the streetlamps, the city humming with an uneasy quiet. It was the kind of night where trouble hid in the shadows, waiting for someone foolish enough to stumble into it.
Mira Valen didn’t think she was foolish… but she had a terrible sense of direction. And tonight, it was going to cost her.
Clutching her umbrella against the wind, she darted across the empty street toward what she thought was the café Ethan had told her about. Her boots splashed through puddles, soaking her socks, and she muttered under her breath about the “brilliant” idea of meeting him here after work.
When she turned the corner, she froze.
Three black SUVs sat idling in front of an old brick warehouse, their tinted windows hiding whoever was inside. The air felt heavier here, the faint scent of gasoline and cigarette smoke curling around her.
A tall man in a black suit stood under the awning, his face shadowed, but there was no mistaking the aura he carried...cold, dangerous, like the air itself shifted to obey him. He was speaking to two other men, his voice low and sharp.
Mira’s instinct screamed at her to back away quietly. Unfortunately, her heel decided that was the perfect moment to skid on the wet pavement.
The sound echoed.
The man’s head turned, his eyes locking on hers. Piercing. Unreadable. The kind of gaze that stripped you bare in seconds.
“Who are you?” he asked, his voice deep, calm… and lethal.
Mira swallowed hard, forcing a nervous smile. “Uh… someone who definitely took a wrong turn.”
The faintest flicker of something passed through his expression...curiosity, maybe..but it vanished just as quickly.
In that moment, she didn’t know his name. But the city did. Adrian Kane. The man you didn’t cross… and somehow, she just had.
Her mind started racing faster than her heartbeat. Great, Mira. You’ve officially stepped into a crime drama. Next thing you know, there’s gonna be chalk outlines and police tape. And you’ll be the idiot in the background holding an umbrella like a clueless extra.
She forced a shaky laugh. Okay, don’t stare. Staring is rude. Oh God, he’s staring at me. Wow. Those eyes are...no, focus, focus. Those are the eyes of a man who could bury you and still make it to dinner on time.
Her brain helpfully added, He’s also stupidly handsome for someone who looks like he could order my execution without blinking.
She adjusted her grip on the umbrella, feeling her palms sweat. Say something smart. Or funny. Or… anything that doesn’t make you sound like a lunatic. No pressure.
“Uh… hi?” she blurted.
Perfect. Absolutely flawless. The award for Most Awkward Human goes to… Mira Valen.
