Chapter 1

The glow of the laptop screen illuminated my face as I leaned closer, the hum of its cooling fan a familiar drone in the quiet of my room. "Come on, come on," I muttered, my fingers drumming a restless rhythm on the edge of the table.

"Patience, Ren," Sumire chided gently, her dark eyes focused intently on the webpage. Hana, perched on the edge of my bed, chewed on her lip, a sure sign of her own anxiety.

"Easy for you to say, Sumire," I retorted, pushing a stray strand of brown hair from my forehead. "You're practically a shoo-in for the pre-med program anywhere. Me? I'm banking on Aethelred. If that falls through, I don't know what I'll do."

"Don't be ridiculous, Renjiro," Hana scoffed, finally tearing her gaze away from the screen. "Your math skills are insane. You could probably teach half the professors at any other college."

"Yeah, well, 'insane' doesn't always translate to 'accepted'," I grumbled, glancing around my room. It wasn't much, really. A simple desk cluttered with textbooks and papers, a bed with a slightly lumpy mattress, and posters of mathematical theorems and abstract art adorning the walls. It was my sanctuary, a place where I could lose myself in the beauty of numbers and equations.

"Alright, alright, enough with the self-pity," Sumire said, clicking through another tab. "We need a backup plan. What if we all fail the entrance exam for Aethelred?"

"Fail?" I repeated, feigning offense. "Me? Fail? Preposterous!"

"Oh, please," Hana rolled her eyes. "Don't let your ego get in the way, Ren. We need to be realistic. What other colleges are even worth considering?"

We spent the next hour bickering and debating, throwing out names of various institutions, each with their own pros and cons. Sumire was set on a top-tier medical program, Hana wanted a school with a strong arts department, and I was desperately clinging to the hope of getting into Aethelred's renowned mathematics program.

Suddenly, a soft chime echoed from my laptop. We all froze, our eyes glued to the screen. A new message had appeared in my inbox.

"What is it?" Hana asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

I clicked on the message, my heart pounding in my chest. It was an invitation.

From: Aethelred College Admissions

Subject: Entrance Exam Invitation

Dear Renjiro Kaito,

You are invited to take the entrance exam for Aethelred College on September 5th at 9:00 AM in the convention center. Please bring a valid photo ID and this invitation.

Sincerely,

Aethelred College Admissions Committee

I stared at the message, my mind struggling to process the words. "I... I got in," I stammered, my voice thick with disbelief.

"Let me see!" Hana exclaimed, peering over my shoulder. Her eyes widened as she read the message. "No way! You actually got an invitation?"

Just then, Sumire's phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, her expression shifting from curiosity to shock. "Me too," she breathed, holding up her phone to show us the message.

Hana's phone buzzed a moment later. She stared at the screen, a slow smile spreading across her face. "Well, what do you know?" she said, her voice laced with excitement. "Looks like we're all going to Aethelred."

Aethelred College. The name alone conjured images of grand halls, brilliant minds, and unparalleled opportunities. It was a place where dreams were forged, where the future leaders of the world were molded. We had heard stories of its prestigious alumni, the groundbreaking research conducted within its walls, and the incredible resources available to its students. It was the pinnacle of academic achievement, a place where anything seemed possible.

We exchanged glances, a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation swirling between us. This was it. This was our chance.

"I need to tell my parents," Sumire said, gathering her things. "They're going to flip."

"Me too," Hana added, grabbing her bag. "They'll want to know all the details."

They both rushed towards the door, eager to share the news with their families. As they reached the hallway, they nearly collided with a woman carrying a stack of laundry.

"Oh! Sorry, Mrs. Kaito!" they exclaimed in unison, stumbling back.

"It's alright, girls," my mom, Akari, said with a smile, steadying the laundry basket. She watched them with a puzzled expression as they hurried out the door. "What was that all about?" she wondered aloud.

I emerged from my room, a grin plastered across my face. "We all got an invitation to take the entrance exam for Aethelred, Mom," I announced, unable to contain my excitement.

Her eyes widened in surprise. "Aethelred College? Really? That's wonderful, Renjiro!"

"I know, right?" I said, my chest swelling with pride. "It's a huge opportunity."

"It certainly is," she agreed, her smile radiating warmth. "Aethelred is known for its exceptional programs and its commitment to fostering innovation. I've heard that graduates from there are highly sought after in every field."

"Exactly!" I exclaimed, my enthusiasm bubbling over. "This could be our ticket to a bright future."

"Well, I'm incredibly proud of you, son," she said, reaching out to ruffle my hair. "You've worked so hard, and you deserve this."

As I looked at my mother's beaming face, a wave of gratitude washed over me. I knew that getting into Aethelred would not only change my life but also make her proud. And that, more than anything, was what I wanted.

The morning sun, a cheerful intruder, sliced through the gap in my curtains, painting a bright rectangle on my bedroom wall. I groaned, burying my face in my pillow, the remnants of dreams about complex equations and impossible theorems clinging to the edges of my consciousness. Today was the day. Aethelred.

I dragged myself out of bed, the weight of anticipation settling heavily in my stomach. A quick shower and a meager breakfast later, I was pacing my room, rereading the acceptance message for the hundredth time. Just as I was starting to feel the familiar tendrils of panic creep in, a rapid-fire knock echoed through the house.

"Ren! Open up, slowpoke!" Hana's voice, impatient as ever, pierced through the door.

I sighed, knowing there was no avoiding them. I opened the door to find Hana and Sumire standing on my porch, radiating an energy that was both infectious and slightly overwhelming.

"Took you long enough," Hana said, rolling her eyes. "We were starting to think you'd fallen back asleep."

"Sorry, sorry," I mumbled, grabbing my bag. "Just a little preoccupied."

"Preoccupied with what? Calculating the probability of us all failing?" Sumire teased, a gentle smile playing on her lips.

"Something like that," I admitted sheepishly.

As we set off towards the bus stop, I couldn't help but notice the knowing glances that passed between Sumire and Hana. They knew my limitations. They knew that my brain was a finely tuned machine capable of processing complex algorithms, but my body was... well, let's just say it wasn't built for speed.

"Alright, Ren," Hana said, clapping me on the back a little too hard. "We're sticking to a snail's pace today. No power-walking, no sudden bursts of energy. We don't want you keeling over before we even get to the exam."

"Hey, I'm not that out of shape," I protested weakly, already feeling a slight twinge in my side.

"Oh, please," Hana scoffed. "Remember that time we tried to climb that hill? You were practically begging us to carry you."

"That was one time!" I retorted, my cheeks flushing slightly.

"And who was the one who had to stop every five minutes during the school marathon to catch his breath?" Sumire added, her eyes twinkling with amusement.

I glared at them both, but there was no real malice behind it. They were my best friends, and their teasing was just their way of showing they cared. Besides, they weren't wrong. I was slow. Pathetically slow.

"Fine, fine," I conceded, raising my hands in surrender. "I'll try to keep up. Just promise you won't leave me in the dust."

"We wouldn't dream of it," Sumire said, linking her arm through mine. "We're a team, remember? We'll get through this together."

As we continued our walk, our conversation drifted from nervous predictions about the exam to shared memories of childhood adventures. Despite the looming pressure of the day, there was a sense of camaraderie between us, a bond forged through years of laughter, tears, and unwavering support.

We were three friends, about to embark on a journey that could change our lives forever. And even though I knew I might be lagging behind, I also knew that I wouldn't be facing it alone.
