The Road to Hell

Key Zero: Poison:

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. But what if there were no good intentions to be had to begin with? Where does that leave things? Where do you go from there? A handful of angels are about to find out.

Lavi

How long has he been on the run now? He’s lost count at this point. All Lavi knew was that he had to keep going. It’s only a matter of time before they catch him. Lavi didn’t have anywhere to go. There was no plan in keeping on the run. Still, he needed to keep going. Damned if he did, damned if he didn’t. It was a miracle that Lavi still had it in him to keep going like this. Anyone else would’ve given up at this point. The angel didn’t have that option. He hadn’t heard from Stacy in a long time. She should be fine, right? Stacy might have been annoying, but she was a tough girl. They hadn’t made any plans to meet up, but still… Lavi thought about Ami and their son. How were they doing?

Tonight, he looked up at the stars. It would be time to go again. Lavi wound up at this random campground. He had no idea where he was. Just figured it would be a good place to camp for the night.

It was quiet out here. There hadn’t been anyone else out here for hours. Lavi had gotten used to that by now. Still, he had to keep up his guard. There had been whispers about angels in this area. Whether they were running from the endless war or just on patrol didn’t matter to him. Lavi didn’t want to find out. He set up camp with what little he had by the lake. Now that he thought about it, the angel found this place kind of creepy at night. There weren’t many places to hide out here. Only a sound cluster of trees stood like guards over this empty land.

Suddenly, Lavi lifted his head. What was that? Maybe he would have to get going right now? He barely got a chance to sleep. The angel cursed himself under his breath. Like he had a choice. Well, time to get going again.

Lavi jumped to his feet and started running again.

Kanda

Brave soldier. All he knew was to fight. This endless war had been his backdrop. Nothing but fights every day. Nothing else to do. Some of the angels grew tired of it. They started to question why they were fighting anymore. Was the enemy even there?

Rumors started spreading around Heaven lately. This “war” was a distraction from a grander scheme for the living world. That the angels and demons were just the pawns. Kanda didn’t listen to any of that.

Most of the other angels never spoke to him. His demeanor made everyone nervous. Why did he look so angry all the time? He barely said a word to anyone. Still, he was a valuable asset to the army. He was rumored to be an unfeeling killing machine. Kanda had quite the kill count under his belt. This angel was a beast.

However, even beasts have their moments of facing what true Hell looks like. Even though he didn’t show it, Kanda felt his own trauma. He just kept it down behind a stone wall in his mind. However, even the strongest walls can have cracks in them.

It just takes one little push and the whole thing starts crashing down. That push will come in the form of a mission that will go sideways.

But that’s not until later.

Lenalee

She’s still looking for him. How long has it been? Lenalee wouldn’t give up. As long as she did her work, no one was going to complain. Heaven had their doubts.

“It’s time she let him go. He’s a lost cause.”

She heard them say that. Lenalee just ignored them. Allen had to be somewhere. He’s been lost since the Great Crash. His name was still on that list. Speaking of which, that list kept growing. That didn’t stop her from looking.

Where are you, Allen?

Despite this, she still had a job to do. There was nothing wrong with that part of her life. However, some of the top officials noticed that Lenalee was getting close to an ill girl in the living world. For now, it looked so small. There was nothing that would cause alarm. Still, they had to ask questions. Amelia Washburn could potentially cause Lenalee to try and spare her. That opinion had Heaven divided.

“She wouldn’t neglect her duties over one human, would she?”

Probably not, but that left the question of Allen. However, no one saw that there was another distraction coming for Lenalee on the horizon. Could anyone blame them? There was a world and other things that pulled their attention elsewhere.

If they had, maybe they would’ve been able to stop the mess from spilling out even further.

Allen

Loyal little puppy. He’s living but he’s got no soul. His eyes looked so empty. Allen’s mind was empty. Road patted him on the head.

“Good boy.”

He had a goofy smile on his face. Who he used to be was programmed out of him. Road took her sweet time breaking him. Now, she’s got the ultimate toy who would never leave her. Allen just wanted to please her.

“Give me a kiss,” she commanded. Allen lifted his head as his mistress leaned down and kissed him on the lips. Road never got tired of using him. Every day, she would find something new to do with him. Her little pet was more than happy to comply.

But was Allen a lost cause? The Escape Crew had no choice but to abandon him and Ophelia. It was all for the good of their own escape. However, it didn’t feel right. But what could they do? Time was running out. The crew couldn’t risk getting caught and dragged back into the city.

Road leaned down to Allen’s ear. “I have something for you.”

There was a little light in the angel’s eyes. He happily followed her back to their room.

Four angels were on their way to dragging the world further into the Wasteland. Some of them can’t even see it. By the time that they did, it might be too late.

Right now, they are at the mouth of their paths. Was going to take the first step?
