CHAPTER ONE

'LIFE BUT A DISASTER'

Rena is a beautiful white mixed black girl from a poor home, a home as poor as anything you could ever imagine. They could only eat once a day, she did jobs to help her ailing father and mum.

She had two younger siblings, Perry and Jonathan. They were both boys and out of school like her. She was an intelligent student always wishing to go back to school. She thought about her life as she walked home. She had just closed from work and was heading home.

She was at her street when she saw some men smoking, she tried avoiding them and walked on. Suddenly, one of them grabbed her hands and asked her to come with him. Rena was scared she didn't want to be a victim of rape, she had heard stories of them raping and destroying innocent girls lives. She begged them to let her go in peace but they insisted she came with them.

She discovered she had only one option which was to run, she decided to pretend by agreeing with them and when the one holding her loosen his grip on her. She ran as fast as she could, they ran after her like wild dogs in a way she never expected. All doors at such times were closed, she had no idea where to run to for help and her home was still blocks away. As she ran she saw a black van coming towards her and she ran onto it.

She was lucky the driver stepped on the breaks before it got closer to her, she couldn't see the occupants of the van though they could see her. She knocked on the door of the van pleading for help, she saw the men already standing in front the van laughing at her. She knocked on the door crying unto whoever was in the van to save her, she cried out, "I will do anything you ask of me if only you would save me, please I am the breadwinner of my poor family, I am ready to give up everything I have for you. I will do anything you want of me, I am ready to be yours forever, if only you would save me. I promise to keep my words."

As she was pleading, the men came closer to her. One of them dragged her to the front of the van and hits her badly, she was crying bitterly as the other man tried to undress her. They were laughing and mocking her, suddenly she heard gunshots, three times. The three men fell at each sound, they fell dead. She looked at him, he had shot them. He was pointing a gun, he looked like a high school student.

He was so handsome and was wearing a school uniform, she saw the school name on the jacket written 'D&D High School'. He walked towards her with a smile and helped her up. He asked her, "Are you feeling better now?" Rena sniffs and thanks him for his help.

He smiled at her and asked her not to thank him. Rena tried smiling and said, "You are a nice and good person, thank you!" He laughed and said, "I am not nice and good, I am the opposite."

Rena was confused, she wondered how a handsome guy like him could be the opposite of good and nice. She saw his name on the badge written, "Dave Martins."

He knew she was staring at his name on his uniform, he asked her, "Do you like my name?"

Rena smiled and said, "I was just wondering how an innocent guy like you, could be opposite of good and nice."

Dave smiled and said, "I am a Mafia."

Rena eyes widened, she looked at him in shock. She couldn't believe she was standing right before a mafia. Some men in black came out of the car to meet him, they realised their boss was taking too long with the outsider.

Rena almost fainted, she tried standing. He said to her calmly, "Not everyone knows of my identity, so you must keep it a secret because you have made an oath to me and you must keep it." Rena remembers all her words, she just stared at him in shock, her jaw dropped.

Dave came closer and kissed her forehead with smiles, and said to her calmly, "We will meet again, beauty!" Then he pat her head and walked back to the black van with his men. Rena stared at them in shock, she watched the black van zoom off, she was speechless.

She walked back home unable to say any word. She got to her home and met her family already asleep except her mum. Her mum welcomed her and ushered her into the small old room. She spread her mat and slept in shock.

Dawn came, she woke up only to see her two brothers looking happy, they said to her in unison. "You won the scholarship!" Rena was shocked, she never wrote to any school. She collected the letter in their hands and discovered she had been awarded a scholarship by D&D High School. A school for the rich and what made it funny was that she never wrote any scholarship exams to any school.

Her parents were so happy that they didn't ask questions, they told her they were happy for her, they told her the school had also sent her a school uniform, books, bag, her room number and many other things.

Mr. Batts, her dad said calmly as he tried sitting on the mat, "I have always prayed for a day like this, for my Rena to finally be able to go back to school."

Her Mum sat close to her, "I am proud of you, make both I and your dad proud when you get there today."

"Today!" Rena spoke out in shock. Her parents told her school resumed the next day which was Monday. Rena was a bit confused, all the things before her had her name, Rena Batts on it all. Even the school uniform, she sighed and saw it as a miracle besides only few lucky ones got to school at such an expensive school like D&D High School.

After persuasion from her family, she packed her things, gave her mum most of the money she had saved while working. The little left she used it to board a public bus to the school. Usually, it took 5 to 6 hours to get to the school but the bus broke down almost everytime. Which made her arrive at night, she was lost in thought as she walked to the main school entrance gate.

She kept wondering how she got the scholarship. She showed the gateman her ID and was allowed in. The school was very big, at the left handside was a path that led to the hostel buildings, by the right handside was an abandoned building which looked wrecked and could have been abandoned for about 50 years perhaps, though it had a sign showing restricted.

The middle was the school main building which was big and looked super expensive. Rena realised they could have spent billions of dollars to build the school. She saw party lights from the rooftop and wondered why such a school will allow students party at night.

She walked closer and heard music blazing loudly. She became interested and came closer to the school building. Suddenly, a body dropped from the tall building. It fell in front of her, it was the body of a female student.

She became scared and looked up only to see some students staring at her from the rooftop, they looked confident as if what they had done merit no punishment. They just stared at her, but those stare was a warning. A warning she could not process the meaning.

The next day was awful for her. She rose up from her bed in her new room. She was in one of the most expensive hostel which was abnormal. Even a student on scholarship never stayed in such hostels as only rich and wealthy students stayed there. Her room mates, Anna, a beautiful black girl from a wealthy home and Judy,a white girl with blonde, daughter of a senate, a billionaire. This two girls asked her about her family background and when she told them, they were shocked and baffled since she was from a poor home.

Though they were nice to her and decided to be her friends. Rena saw herself lucky she wasn't put in a room filled with proud crazy rich students.

She washed herself up and prepared for school, she left the room together with Anna and Judy.

Rena was so curious that she asked about the girl who fell from the rooftop the previous night. Anna gave her a cold response saying the girl was in the intensive unit receiving care.

Rena wanted to ask why the school tolerated those things but the girls kept on saying the same thing, "It's more than what you can imagine."

Those lines made Rena more curious.

She walked with them to the school building, but as she walked she heard whispers from students with the same rhyme, "She's the one!"

Rena wondered why they kept saying that line about her, she got to the entrance of the school building only to see some guys standing at the entrance as if they had been waiting for her.

They all had sticks in their hands, they stopped her and her friends from moving. Anna tried speaking, "What gave you bullies the right to obstruct us from moving?"

Just then, a beautiful damsel with her friends came closer, the boys gave her respect by making way for her. Her name is Queen, she played with her coiled black hair and asked Rena, "Are you the poor nigger that crushed our party last night?"

Rena looked at her uncertain, she noticed that Anna and Judy seemed to be scared of her, she wondered why all the students were still and mute as if they saw a ghost especially when the lady in front of her stepped in.

Queen asked her again this time angrily, "What gave such a poor nigger like you the audacity to disturb my party last night?" Rena was shocked at her confidence after almost killing someone, she said to her calmly, "Party or more like a killer's club, I wonder why you still brag about such party after almost killing an innocent soul!"

Queen felt pissed and angry, she asked Rena, "Do you know who I am? How dare you question me?"

Rena was now more than the word hot temper, she asked Queen angrily, "Who are you? Who do you think you are to kill innocent souls?"

Queen got so angry and slapped Rena hard on her face. Rena got more angrier and slapped Queen back but this time twice on both cheeks making the whole students gasp in shock. Anna and Judy were already begging Queen on behalf of Rena.

Rena was just staring at them more amazed at the madness being displayed in front of her, the boys with sticks came closer and pushed Rena to the floor.

Before Rena could realise that she had just slapped the president daughter, and had gotten herself into trouble, she received five slaps from the boys.

Rena struggled to free herself, no body intervened to help her, not even Anna or Judy, they looked at her helplessly making Rena realised it was more than what she thought.

The boys kept on hitting her, and she eventually burst into tears screaming they should let her go.

Then Queen came closer and said aloud, "Why don't we naked this poor nigger and shame her to the world?"

Most of the students laughed at this remark, the boys held Rena up and one of them was about to tear her uniform with scissors when his voice echoed making every student scared at his presence including Queen.

"If you dare lay your hands on my beauty, I will kill you all!" Dave said angrily as he stood in front of the scene. Rena saw his fury and angry eyes despite the fact the tears in her eyes obstructed her seeing.

Her heart was beating loudly as she looked at Dave, but then another voice was heard making the crowd gasp in shock.

"If you have to save her then you would have to go through me." His voice echoed, his name is Terry. His presence made Queen feel relieved and happy.

Rena looked at the reaction from the students and realised she was the only one who found it difficult to understand what was going on.

Dave looked at her and then faced Terry, "Didn't you hear when I said aloud that I will kill anyone who touches my beauty?"

Terry smiled and spits on Dave mockingly, he said laughing, "Kill? What can you kill? I already told you not to involve yourself in any issue in this school! Little mafia!"

Dave looked at Terry and said to him, "Tell your dogs to let go of my beauty now or else!"

"Or else what?" Terry dared angrily.

Dave got super angry, brought out his gun and shot it at the sky angrily. In that moment, the whole school had gone upside down. It was all chaos, all chaos.
