Chapter 1 : The child among gods
The Celestial Halls of Aethernia stretched endlessly, its pillars made of starlight, its floors paved with crystal fragments of dying galaxies. Here, where the echoes of creation lingered, only the greatest beings of existence could walk freely.
And among them was him.
He appeared as a youth no older than sixteen, clad in simple robes of white threaded with silver. His eyes, unlit and calm, carried neither pride nor fear. Unlike the other gods who cloaked themselves in radiance to display their power, he carried no aura—yet the silence around him seemed heavier than the presence of suns.
He was known only as the Crownless One, the youngest god of the Celestial Hall.
Whispers followed him wherever he walked.
“Why does the Supreme favor him?”
“He is but a child.”
“Unworthy.”
The gods spoke with disdain, but none dared to voice their venom before the throne. For seated at the highest seat of Aethernia was the Supreme God, the King of Gods, whose golden crown shone brighter than constellations.
The Supreme’s gaze often lingered on the boy with a softness that enraged the others.
“Sit,” the Supreme commanded one day at a gathering. His voice rolled like thunder, shaking galaxies into silence. “Tonight we dine. Tonight we celebrate creation’s balance.”
The feast stretched like eternity. Platters bore suns carved into jewels, goblets brimmed with liquid time. Gods laughed and argued, their voices booming like storms across universes. Yet amidst the cacophony, the Crownless One ate in silence, each movement deliberate, as though the taste of divinity held no meaning to him.
It was then that one of the elder gods, his hair burning with the flames of collapsed stars, sneered openly.
“Supreme,” he said, rising to his feet. “Why keep a child among us? He has not earned his throne, nor has he shown his worth. Should our divine assembly not be reserved for those tested by eternity?”
A murmur rippled through the hall. Many nodded. A few smirked.
The Supreme God’s expression darkened, though his voice remained steady. “You question my judgment?”
“We question the boy,” another god answered, her voice sharp as broken steel. “He sits here only because of your favor. But favor does not make one worthy.”
The boy set his goblet down. His gaze, cold and detached, swept across them. There was no anger, no offense—only stillness, like the void before the birth of a universe.
“If you doubt me,” he spoke softly, his voice carrying across the hall without force, “then test me.”
The laughter that followed was cruel.
“A child challenging the pantheon?”
“Madness.”
“Let him try. Perhaps we will be rid of him sooner.”
But even as they mocked, unease settled in their cores. For there was something in his tone—an indifference not born of arrogance, but of certainty.
The Supreme God studied him, eyes narrowing, as though sensing a storm waiting beyond the horizon.
That night, when the feast ended, the whispers grew darker. Plans were seeded. Envy sharpened into blades.
And high above, in the quiet of the throne room, the Supreme God sat alone, his hand tightening around his golden crown.
“Child,” he muttered to the empty hall, “what are you hiding…?”
