Chapter 1
I hate Christmas.
Look at them. There must be hundreds, no, thousands of them. The noise, it’s awful. They're all rushing around, searching for that last-minute present for someone who probably doesn’t even want it. They’ll all be back in a few days, wanting to exchange.
Everyone's loaded down with shopping bags and – wait, now that’s a good idea. She’s got a suitcase and she’s packing all her purchases inside so she can just wheel it away. That’s pretty clever. I've not seen that before.
But just listen to that music. It’s supposed to be music to spend by, not dream by.
‘Some enchanted evening.’ Well, it is Christmas Eve, so I guess they got that right.
‘You may see a stranger.’ Ha! Yes, thousands of them!
‘Across a crowded room.’ Yes, spot on. It’s certainly crowded.
‘You’ll see her again and again.’ How likely is that? Come on. This is real life, not a song.
Oh, wait, look. Over there. A beautiful stranger. Wow. Big blue eyes, golden curls, and a glorious smile. She’s looking this way. She’s looking at me! I’m so excited, I can’t move, can’t breathe, can’t even blink as I stare at her. She’s so beautiful. She’s getting closer. Is she pointing at me? Really? Maybe Christmas isn’t so bad after all.
Oh no, everything’s spinning round. It’s getting dark. The world’s gone crazy. I think I’m going to faint.
