Chapter 1: The Weight Above
The house was old, built when foundations were deep and secrets were deeper. Clara had inherited it from a great-aunt she barely knew, and the only thing stranger than the dusty, time-warped furniture was the absolute silence. It wasn't the peace of a quiet home; it was the suffocating absence of sound, as if the air itself was too dense to carry a vibration.
One Tuesday, while dusting the mantelpiece in the dining room, her fingers brushed against something cool and metallic, tucked behind a heavy porcelain clock. It was an iron key, intricately wrought and far heavier than it should have been. It looked ancient, almost medieval. Engraved on the bow of the key was a single, unsettling symbol: a closed eye, lashed like a weeping wound.
"What does this open?" she murmured, the sound startlingly loud in the oppressive silence.
Later that night, the answer arrived not as a revelation, but as a pressure. Clara lay in bed, unable to sleep, convinced she heard something moving directly above her. The house had no second floor. She knew this. There was only a low, slanting roof over her bedroom ceiling. But tonight, there was a faint, rhythmic drag-scrape noise—the sound of something heavy being slowly pulled across bare, dusty wood. It was coming from the space between the ceiling and the roof.
It sounded like whatever was up there had just found its footing.
