Chapter 1: A Mysterious Transmission

Chapter 1: A Mysterious Transmission

The sun had just set on the Plutarch, the exploration ship silently suspended in the interplanetary void. The five astronauts aboard, Captain Rafael Jirius, Dr. Mary Shearing, Ashlyn Lopez, Maxwell Stroet, and Dijon Caulder, were each o the beginning of their respective shifts. All at once the cabin of the Plutarch lit up with a loud beeping sound.

The captain wasted no time, hastily pressing the onboard intercom system. “What’s happening out there?”

Dijon, the chief navigator, snapped back. “It appears to be a communication from a long-range transmitter. It’s coming from an unfamiliar location… planet Darwin-6J. It’s been broadcasting for some time now, Captain.”

The navigator found an unusual frequency coming from the planet, and when everyone had made it to the bridge, they all heard a transmission that sounded like a distress signal.

Captain Jirius turned to Ashlyn and began barking orders. “I want you to look into the coordinates and verify the signal with the main computer. Dr. Shearing, get a full scan of the planet’s surface. We need to know what the situation is down there.”

The crew began to work quickly, exchanging looks of determination and anxiety. When the data from Darwin-6J started to roll in, everyone in the bridge settled in a stunned silence. The captain finally broke the quiet in a tight, unfamiliar voice.

“We’ll find out what’s down there,” he said. “We’ll take a shuttle down and make sure the signal is accurate, and then we’ll come back and make an informed decision about our next course of action.”
