Summary

True-crime podcaster Lena Myles shuns caution and buys the infamous Marrow House—crime scene of a vanished serial killer. Her intent is clear: record the definitive oral history amid the blood-stained walls and creaking memories. But as sleepless nights unspool and Lena interviews those still haunted by the past, the house awakens. Brutal murders replay themselves—through her senses—blurring reality and memory, and forcing her to confront whether some places truly forget, or if they keep their secrets alive by any means necessary.

Chapter 1

Bare bulbs flickered above Lena as she slid her old tape recorder out of its case, thumb brushing the dented microphone. The vast front hall fanned out before her—sinuous and cold. Dust lifted in the September light, catching on the remnants of yellow police tape, still clinging to the banister like the aftertaste of something rotten. Lena didn’t shudder. She’d seen enough crime scenes to know their power faded under scrutiny. But Marrow House was different. Its silence seemed measured and attentive, as if the walls leaned in to listen.

“Battery check—testing,” she murmured, voice steady despite the skitter of nerves beneath her ribs. Already, an echo answered; her own voice slid back, muffled and warped. She paused, the breath she drew too thin, like air snatched from her. Somewhere between the warped floorboards, a memory waited, coiled and flexed.

Every true crime podcast rode a currency of confession and fear. Lena’s was no exception. But this time, she wasn’t hunting specters—she was inviting them. Settling the microphone atop the antique credenza, she mapped the first episode in her head. Welcome to Marrow House. What lingers between the walls and beneath the floors?

She traced the faded bloodstains on the stair risers, deliberate, respectful. The killer, never caught, was rumored to have carved reversals of his own initials into the wood. Lena pressed her fingers into the indents. Warmth bled up into her skin—impossible, but unmistakable. The house seemed pleased to have her.

The afternoon clouded over, casting dirty shadows that made the plaster crawl with suggestion. Lena’s phone vibrated sharply, a text from her producer: “Still time to back out. Call me.” She stared at the message. Outside, wind shouldered at the shutters, making them judder with impatience. She deleted the message. Marrow House had claimed her curiosity; caution had never stood a chance.

She raised her recorder, summoning her best broadcast voice. “Tell me what’s been forgotten here, and what won’t stay dead.” Silence thickened. Between her words and the moaning wood, something else responded—a faint, rhythmic thump, like a heartbeat echoing beneath the floorboards.
