First Impressions

The salt air hit Bethany like a warm embrace the moment she stepped out of Tyler’s Jeep.

The beach house rose ahead of them—three stories of weathered gray shingles, wide decks, and windows that caught the late-afternoon sun like mirrors. Tyler’s family had rented it for the week, a tradition they’d kept since the boys were small. This was the first time Bethany had been invited, and the nerves in her stomach felt like butterflies with razor wings.

Tyler squeezed her hand. “They’re going to love you. Just be yourself.”

She smiled, trying to believe it. She’d met Tyler’s parents a few times—kind, loud, always laughing—but never the whole clan at once. And never his twin.

They climbed the steps. The front door flew open before they reached it. Tyler’s mom, Karen, enveloped Bethany in a hug that smelled of sunscreen and lavender. “You’re even prettier than the pictures!”

Behind her stood Tyler’s dad, Mike, offering a firm handshake and a wink. Then came the sister, Lauren, twenty-three and sharp-eyed, who sized Bethany up like she was auditioning for the role of future sister-in-law.

And then there were the twins.

Tyler stepped forward to hug his brother, and Bethany’s breath caught.

They were identical.

Same sandy-brown hair, same broad shoulders, same hazel eyes that crinkled at the corners when they smiled. Same height—six-two—same easy athletic build from years of surfing and pickup basketball. Even their voices carried the same low timbre, the same slight drawl on certain vowels.

“Bethany, this is Tristan,” Tyler said, clapping his twin on the back.

Tristan’s gaze locked on hers. “Hey.” His smile was slower than Tyler’s, a little more knowing. “Heard a lot about you.”

She felt heat crawl up her neck. “Nice to finally meet you.”

The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur of unpacking, cold beers on the deck, and stories about childhood summers at this very house. Bethany tried to focus on Tyler—his hand on her knee, his easy laughter—but her attention kept drifting to Tristan.

He was quieter than Tyler, more observant. Where Tyler told jokes and kept the conversation moving, Tristan watched. He watched her when she laughed, when she tucked her hair behind her ear, when she leaned over the railing to point at a pod of dolphins offshore. His eyes lingered a beat too long, and every time their gazes met, something electric snapped between them.

By dinner, the family was loose from margaritas and the heat of the day. They ate grilled shrimp and corn on the cob on the back deck, the ocean a dark rumble below. Bethany sat between Tyler and Tristan. Every time she reached for the salt, her arm brushed one of them. Tyler’s touch was familiar, comforting. Tristan’s felt different—deliberate, like he was testing how far he could push the contact before she pulled away.

After dessert, the group migrated to the fire pit on the lower deck. Flames licked the night air. Someone put on music—old reggae—and Lauren dragged Mike up to dance. Karen and Tyler joined them, laughing.

Bethany stayed seated, nursing her drink. Tristan dropped into the chair beside her.

“Not dancing?” he asked.

“I’m not much of a dancer.”

“Tyler says you’re good at everything else.” His tone was light, but the words carried weight.

She met his eyes. “He’s biased.”

“Maybe.” Tristan leaned closer, elbows on his knees. “Or maybe he’s right.”

The firelight carved shadows across his face, making him look almost exactly like Tyler—except for the way his gaze burned. She swallowed.

“You two really are identical,” she said, trying to steer the conversation to safer ground.

“People have been mixing us up since kindergarten.” He smirked. “Used to be fun. Switched classes, switched dates. Got away with a lot.”

She laughed, but it came out breathy. “I bet you did.”

His knee brushed hers. Neither of them moved away.

Tyler appeared then, flushed and happy, pulling Bethany to her feet. “Come on, babe. Dance with me.”

She let him spin her around the fire pit, laughing as he dipped her dramatically. When she glanced back, Tristan was watching, his expression unreadable.

Later, in their bedroom on the second floor, Tyler tugged her close. His mouth tasted like lime and salt. His hands slid under her sundress, rough with calluses from his job at the boatyard.

“I’ve been thinking about this all day,” he murmured against her throat.

She arched into him, desire pooling low in her belly. They made love quickly, urgently—his body familiar, steady. Afterward, he fell asleep almost instantly, one arm slung across her waist.

Bethany lay awake, staring at the ceiling fan. The house was quiet except for the distant crash of waves. Her skin still buzzed. She felt restless, unsatisfied in a way she couldn’t name.

She slipped out of bed, pulled on a silk robe, and padded barefoot down the hall toward the stairs. Maybe a glass of water. Maybe some air.

At the top of the stairs, she paused. The hot tub lights glowed faintly on the lower deck, steam curling into the night. She remembered Tyler mentioning earlier that he sometimes snuck down there after everyone went to bed.

She smiled to herself. Maybe she’d surprise him.

She texted him quickly: Meet me in the hot tub? Can’t sleep.

No reply. He was probably out cold.

She went anyway.

The night air was cool against her legs as she descended the steps. The hot tub was empty, bubbles churning softly. She dropped her robe on a lounge chair, stepped out of her panties, and sank into the water in just her bra. The heat enveloped her, loosening every muscle.

She closed her eyes, letting her head fall back.

A shadow moved on the deck.

“Couldn’t sleep either?” The voice was low, familiar.

She smiled without opening her eyes. “Thought you were passed out.”

A soft chuckle. “Almost. Saw your text.”

She heard the rustle of clothes, the quiet splash as he stepped in. The water shifted around her. She kept her eyes closed, savoring the anonymity of the dark.

Hands found her waist, pulling her onto his lap. She straddled him, the hard length of him pressing against her through his swim trunks. She rocked slowly, teasing.

“You’re so fucking sexy,” he whispered, voice rough.

She kissed him, deep and hungry.

His mouth was the same, but hungrier, less gentle. His hands roamed—cupping her breasts, thumbs brushing her nipples through lace until she gasped.

“Tyler,” she breathed, grinding down harder.

He groaned, fingers sliding between her thighs, finding her slick and ready. He pushed the fabric aside, stroking her clit in slow circles that made her hips jerk.

She reached down, tugging at his trunks until his cock sprang free—thick, hot, already leaking. She stroked him once, twice, then guided him to her entrance.

He thrust up as she sank down, filling her in one smooth stroke.

They both moaned.

The water sloshed around them as they moved—slow at first, then faster, desperate. His hands gripped her ass, guiding her rhythm. She rode him hard, chasing the edge, her nails digging into his shoulders.

He buried his face in her neck, teeth grazing her skin.

“Fuck, you feel so good.”

She shattered first, crying out as pleasure ripped through her. He followed seconds later, pulsing inside her, his grip bruising.

They stayed like that, panting, until the water settled.

She kissed his jaw. “Love you.”

He didn’t answer right away. Just held her tighter.
