Summary

Empires, gods, magic All consume what they cannot control Liora dances because she has to, flirts to survive, and serves at the whims of humans. Her Aimnhe heritage--a people descended from animal spirits--is mocked, fetishized, or punished. But her life is upended when she's rescued from slavery by Raeya and Etanie, divine enforcers for the theocratic Dellem Empire. Skeptical of her new ally's motives, but with nowhere else to turn, Liora becomes swept up in a plot to hand the city of Cindrel back to its rightful queen, whatever the cost. Caught between love and duty, Liora must decide if she wants a life for herself free of pain, debt and loss--or if she has an obligation to those living under the empire's oppression. As forces beyond her control threaten to sweep her up into a hidden divine conflict, Liora faces two difficult questions: What does she owe to a world that's only been cruel? And what does she owe to the woman she's beginning to fall in love with?
