Intro
Chelsea was running late, as per usual. Her alarm failed to go off and she could not, for the life of her, find her school uniform.
It’s bad enough she was running late, but it’s even worse when it’s her first day at a new school that’s in a completely different country.
Once she finally found her uniform and was dressed, she threw her hair up into a ponytail and quickly put on some foundation before grabbing her bag and rushing out to catch the city bus.
Finding a seat was hard enough on a crowded bus but when people wouldn’t scoot over, when they clearly could, it made it even worse.
Chelsea managed her way to the back of the bus where she found a seat with a guy close to the window. She quickly sat down before the guy could notice and deny her the seat. However, luck wasn’t really on her side as the guy noticed her but did nothing to make her move.
She found him odd. She didn’t like the feeling she got from just being near him. Luckily her stop wasn’t too far ahead. She put in her earbuds and began listening to her music.
Quite a while passed before the guy next to her tapped her shoulder. She pulled out the ear bud closest to him and looked at him with a questioning look.
He stood and pointed out the window in the seat across from them at the school. Only then did she notice two things. Not only was the stranger really good looking in a school uniform, but that he also went the same school as her. She quickly got up and exited the bus, the guy following behind.
Even though she was unnerved by this, she decided to just ignore it and go straight to the office. Or so she thought anyway.
With no signs anywhere, she just stood in the hall of students. As everyone passed, she noticed something different about all of them.
That girl has a wand behind her ear. The girl she’s talking to has the faint outline of wings. The boy in the small group has a lot of hair. Another boy in the group had black and red horns on his head. Then she notices the guy from the bus talking with them and pointing to her.
Chelsea began to get uneasy. First day and they were already talking about her. Great. She skedaddled outta there as the tardy bell rang loud across the halls.
The other students didn’t seem to mind as they casually strolled and talked with one another before splitting. She began roaming the halls in search of the office.
Her other school would never tolerate tardiness. Especially of this magnitude. She remembered a time when her best friend was late by just a few seconds and she was expelled for a week!
The dress code here seemed more strict but also not. School uniforms are mandatory but you can also personalize the clothes. She saw some girls had badges, some had glitter, some were even tied into crop tops. The guys had holes in the pants, stitched designs of their favorite bands or teams.
The halls here were longer and more maze-like. The teachers wore ridiculous outfits and had even more ridiculous names. She dreaded to see the principal of the school.
Finally, she made it to her destination. She entered the office and was surprised to see the group from the hall sitting behind the front desk. The boy from the bus looked up.
“Can I help you?” He asked in a tone that suggested he really did not want to deal with people.
Chelsea swallowed a little. He wore a grey beanie and his hair was slightly poking out from it.
“I...uh...I need to speak to whoever does transfers...” She mumbled as she trailed off. It seemed like he heard her as he phoned someone further in the office.
“Kalina will be with you in just a sec.” He said as he turned back to the group and they began chatting about something Chelsea didn’t understand.
She waited for a good minute before a woman with pointed ears and a very elegant suit walked out.
“Chelsea Grey?” She asked as she looked around the room. The boy from the bus pointed to Chelsea. The woman smiled and gestured her to follow.
As she followed the woman, she felt eyes on her the entire time until they disappeared behind the door.
“You eyed her hard.” The girl with the wand said.
The boys shrugged. “She is not like us. Her blood smells different.”
“I didn’t know blood could smell different from iron and metallic.” The boy with horns said as he played with a slinkie.
“Believe me, it does. For example, Bailey’s smells like mint or rosemary, as she is a witch. Brittany’s smells like glitter and cupcakes since she’s a fairy. Lei’s smells like ash because he’s a demon. And Collin’s smells like wet dog since he’s a werewolf.” The boy explained.
“Are you sure you aren’t just smelling our normal scents?” Lei questioned.
“Yes, because your scents also smell like iron.” The boy sassed.
Lei held up his hands. “Okay okay. Sassy vampire today aren’t ya?”
“When is he not sassy?” Brittany questioned from her seat on Collin’s lap.
“Oh, go back to making out with your boy.” Bailey said as she walked to another room to handle paperwork, Lei following close behind.
“And I thought Collin was supposed to be the obedient puppy.” Brittany said, causing the boy to giggle and Collin to pout.
Collin was about to protest when one of the doors opened and Chelsea walked out with Kalina.
“So, who wants to give Chelsea a tour?” Kalina asked, causing the boy to point to Brittany.
“I’m sure Brittany wouldloveto give the new chick a tour.” He smirked and Brittany glared.
“You’re an ass, Onyx, you know that?” She said as she got up from her spot on Collin’s lap.
Onyx shrugged. “Call it what you will, I got stuck with the new transfer last time.”
Brittany rolled her eyes as she led Chelsea out of the office and through the halls. She briefly described each class and the respective teacher.
By the time they were done, it was almost lunch.
“So, any questions?” Brittany asked as they waited outside the cafeteria doors.
“I do have a few. First, you said these classes teach different things about races and magics. What exactly is this school?” Chelsea asked, genuinely confused and it has not yet set in her brain it was full of supernatural beings.
Brittany giggled. “We are a different breed of humans, you could say. We are talked about in fairy tales, fables, myths, and legends. I take it you are just a normal human?”
Chelsea nodded slowly. “I guess so. I know nothing of anything here, any beings here, nor how to interact with any of em.”
“That is trial and error. Some are sweet and kind, like me and Bailey, but I mean, being sisters, it kinda runs in the family. Lei is laid back despite being from hell, quite literally. Collin acts like a dog sometimes but you learn to adapt.” Brittany smiled fondly as she explained her little friend group.
This caused Chelsea to smile as well until she noticed something. “You didn’t mention the other boy. The one who phoned Miss Kalina earlier.”
Brittany’s smile softened and brightened a little. “That would be Onyx. He seems like an ass, kinda is, but he is an absolute sweetheart. Even though he has been dead for only twenty years, he is still in touch with humanity.”
Brittany’s smile grew to Chelsea. “So, is he like, a zombie or something?” She questioned, fiddling with her uniform jacket.
Brittany shook her head. “He is a vampire. And to be honest, it is scary how reckless he is but he is learning. The school is designed to help us be more in touch with our supernatural sides and they help a lot. Bailey is learning magic; Collin is learning how to transform and to prevent it from happening out of the blue; Lei is learning how to use curses; I am learning how to use charms and auras; Onyx, the poor babe, he is learning to control his hunger and his urges to feed.
“How long have you guys been here?”
Brittany smiled sadly. “A long time, my dear. Quite a long time.”
Before Chelsea could question any further, the bell rang for lunch and students spilled into the hall and cafeteria. Brittany pulled her aside and out of the way.
“Would you like to sit with us?” Brittany asked as he saw her group coming down the hall. Chelsea nodded and thanked her as they all walked into the cafeteria and got foods.
Once they sat down and got comfy, they began eating. Chelsea noted that Brittany and Bailey ate what looked like normal people food, Collin was eating raw meat, Lei was munching on an unknown stick, and Onyx had a small blood packet in his mouth, sucking slowly.
They all talked with each other about plans, including Chelsea in the conversation as well. Chelsea smiled and talked freely with the group. Until a group of guys walked over.
“Hey, Onyx. You doin the technics for the play next month?” One of them asked in a smug tone.
Onyx nodded “Yea, why?”
“I want to change the music for my musical number. I don’t think fits my character.”
“Take it up with Ruthia. Not me.”
“Oh come on. It won’t hurt anything.
“Buzz off. I am not getting detention nor will I be yelled at by Ruthia for something stupid like that. I may be immortal, but even I am scared to change something without her consent.”
The girl glared, reached over, and squeezed the blood packet in Onyx’s mouth. Onyx’s glared at him, eyes dilated and a menacing smirk on his face.
“I suggest you fucking run, and hope to a higher being I don’t find you.” Onyx growled.
The group scattered and Onyx chuckled before sitting down. Chelsea noticed he was shaking quite violently.
“Guys. Help me get this off before I actually act on my threat and kill the dude.” Onyx said shakily, both boys immediately helping him clean up as best they could.
“I have a spare uniform you can wear in my locker.” Lei suggested, receiving a nod from Onyx. The two went to get the uniform.
“Does that usually happen?” Chelsea asked, getting a nod from Bailey.
“The only reason they took his threat for real is because he has actually killed someone when they did that. It was years ago but still.” Bailey explained.
Chelsea shivered at the thought.
“Onyx is a curve ball. He can be the sweetest boy ever, the most ruthless maniac in the world, the most emotional guy in a sea of nerds, goths, and depressed anxious beings.” Brittany explained as she drank her drink.
“That seems confusing. Like, really confusing.” Chelsea thought aloud.
“Believe me, it is. When I first met him, I thought he was insane, and even requested he be put into a facility. But then I learned that he is just a confused vampire who is still learning, even after so long of being one.” Collin informed.
Bailey giggled. “Either way, he is actually really fun to be around. Especially at night.”
“Are you guys really serious when you say I can hang out with you guys later?” Chelsea asked quietly.
“Of course! You would be a great addition to our group!” Brittany exclaimed, causing Chelsea to smile.
“So, what do you guys usually do for a hangout? Do you go to the coffee shop or --”
Lei rushed over to the table. “We have a problem.”
