Chase

Five years ago, Angel D’Amore told her family how she met her husband, my grandfather. Luca D’Amore. She said that he was an awful man, the devil. But when I was little, he wasn’t like that he was caring, happy, loveable old man. Don’t get me wrong he was scary looking with his body covered from head to toe in tattoos.

To his enemies he was like the devil but to his family, he loved us very much and even told us every day about how much he did. I was eight years old when he died. That was fifteen years ago. He died of lung cancer just like how his father had died. When he passed away, my grandmother wasn’t the same happy old lady, no. I knew she was broken hearted, even though she was she always managed to put on a smile every day.

Five years ago today, I had walked into my grandma’s room, she was turning ninety that day, so I was going to wake her up like I always did with some breakfast. When I called out to her she didn’t wake up, so I thought she was just having a heavy sleep, but when I touch her to shake her awake her body was cold.

She had died in her sleep that night holding the last photo that my father took of her and my grandpa. It still brings me to tears every time I think about it, I really miss them a lot. That is why I left five years ago; I couldn’t handle being in that place for a while knowing I wasn’t ever going to see her again.

I left everyone behind, they knew where I was, but I couldn’t return home, until now. My sister Stella and I were meant to be co-owning the club Fallen Angel. A gift that my grandpa brought for my grandma and named it after her. She made it into a burlesque lounge which was pretty cool because you don’t see them now days. Stella and my mother have been running the place while I have been away.

Over the past five years I have been in Australia. I have gone to university there studying business. I don’t know why I picked to go to Australia, but I did. I knew it was time to come home and that was where I was heading. I had missed my family over the years, skyping them wasn’t the same as actually being there and being able to hug them.

I knew I would get emotional when I stepped off that plane. Coming back to Jersey was hard and I knew my grandma would be shaking her finger and yelling at me to come home sooner but I wasn’t ready for it...

The last time I was here was for Grandma Angel’s funeral, I left straight after in tears. Watching her being lower into the ground next to grandpa’s grave was the hardest thing I’ve watched.

I laid a blood red rose on her grave and one of my grandpa’s too, my father paid someone to put fresh flowers at their graves every couple of days, but I wanted to lay some for myself.

“I’m sorry I left grandma and grandpa. I couldn’t stay here after you left... I was so broken... I still am without you two here... I wish I was like you.” I say as I kneel in front of their graves, wiping away the tears that fell from my eyes. “Happy 95th birthday grandma. I wish I was with you to celebrate it with grandpa. I am here to stay. I’m done with the running I’ve come home to where I belong... I wish you two were here” I kiss my hand as I lay it on the graves.

But was it a good idea to come back, or will it be the worst idea I’ve ever had?
