ASHES OF THE FIRST CURSE

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

In a world where the land itself remembers every oath, every curse, and every sacrifice, one girl becomes the hinge upon which history turns. Ash, marked by the First Binding, must navigate a waking world of ancient powers, unseen guardians, and relentless forces that test the limits of choice and endurance. As she learns that survival is not enough—only balance can save the living—the line between human and land blurs, and the cost of holding the world together is more than anyone could imagine.

Chapter 1 – Ash and the First Binding

The land did not sleep.

It listened—through roots buried deep beneath the ash, through stone that remembered fire, through soil that had swallowed screams and learned to keep them.

Long ago, this ground had burned. Not with ordinary flame, but with a heat that twisted prayers into curses and turned blood into oath. Even now, the earth breathed softly beneath the night air, as though something beneath it waited to be named again.

Ash moved carefully across the field.

Her boots disturbed the grey dust only slightly, yet the ground seemed to recognize her. The ash shifted, whispering against her soles, reluctant to let her pass. She pulled her cloak tighter, though the night was not cold. It was heavy—thick with unease she had learned not to question.

She had felt it since childhood.

A pull. A quiet summons that came whenever she stood upon old ground—places others avoided or forgot. Villagers said such lands were cursed, that nothing good came from walking where kingdoms had fallen. Ash had listened once. She had paid for it with years of unanswered dreams.

Tonight, she listened again—but to the land.

The moon hung low, pale and watchful, casting silver over the scorched plain. Broken stones jutted from the earth like the ribs of something long dead. No walls remained, no towers, no banners to mark what had once stood here.

Only ash.

Always ash.

Ash stopped.

Her breath caught—not from fear, but from recognition.

The ground beneath her feet pulsed—once, faintly—like a heartbeat remembered after death. She knelt without fully knowing why, pressing her palm into the soil. Heat bloomed against her skin, sharp enough to tear a gasp from her throat.

The land answered.

Images flickered behind her eyes: fire climbing the sky, voices crying out names that had been erased, a crown falling into flame. She pulled her hand back too late. The ash had already stained her skin, dark lines curling along her palm like veins.

A binding.

Her heart thundered.

“No,” she whispered.

The night offered no reply.

The mark burned brighter, and somewhere deep beneath the soil, something ancient stirred—awake at last.

A low hum rose from the earth, soft but insistent. Ash felt it in her chest, a vibration that was neither sound nor thought, but something older than memory. The land was speaking, and she understood only fragments. Oaths. Promises. Blood.

A shadow shifted in the corner of her vision. Not human, not animal, but deliberate. Something watched, testing. Waiting.

Ash rose slowly, senses straining. Every instinct told her to flee, yet she could not. The binding anchored her here. The land had chosen her.

And she would answer.
