Chapter 1
I wasn't supposed to see her kill someone.
The alley should've been empty. That's why I cut through it..
It's cold, late, and my clothes are soaked.
My long black hair drapes over my face. The rain was making my leather jacket, mini skirt, white tank top and knee-high boots stick to my body like glue.
The city hummed behind me, distant traffic, rain, and flickering streetlights dancing in the puddles. But here, here it was quiet.
That's when I almost missed it.
A scream. Soft thud. Then silence.
At the far end of the alley, someone stood over a figure lying on the floor.
Stunned. I stopped breathing.
Shivers were felt between the flesh touching my bones.
I should've left, but I was so intrigued by the silhouette standing there. Did she just kill someone?
I couldn't see much. The raindrops on my glasses felt like an added filter to what I was looking at.
What I could see was hard to miss: her bright red, soaking wet, wavy hair glowing under the streetlights.
While I'm lost in thought, I quickly get brought back to reality.
She looked up.
Her eyes found mine instantly.
My chest tightened, and I stopped breathing again.
She looked at me like she'd been expecting me.
She was studying me.
She tilted her head slightly. Then she started to walk towards me with a level of hunger in her eyes that I've never seen before.
I should run right?
..right?
I turned around and bolted out of the alley, my pulse vibrating my eardrums as I pushed into the street. Dodging cars, not caring who was in my way.
I ducked into the first place that I saw. A bar. Perfect, it's loud. Crowded. Music is pounding through the floor and into my chest.
I need a fucking drink.
I move towards the bar, trying my best to blend in and not look around.
I grip the edge of the bar to steady myself, waiting for the bartender to acknowledge me.
As I'm trying to control my breathing, I feel someone behind me, pushing up against me, and leaning over to firmly grab my wrist.
My entire body froze.
I slowly turn my face towards them, only to be face-to-face with her.
Up close she was even more beautiful than I ever imagined. Which was more unsettling because she didn't look dangerous.
Sharp cheekbones. Green eyes. Long, soaking wet curly red hair. Plump red lips that were slightly parted, like she was about to say something she'd already decided on.
Her eyes trailed to my wrist in her hand, then back to my face.
I could tell she was looking at my lips.
"You run fast," she said.
Her voice was a little raspy. Calm.
I swallowed. "Let go of me."
She didn't.
Instead, her thumb shifted slightly against my skin and her grip tightened.
Not enough to hurt. Enough to notice.
"You saw something you shouldn't have," she continued, like we were having a normal conversation.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I blurted out.
Her lips curved faintly. I could tell she wasn't impressed with me lying to her.
“Then you won’t mind coming with me,” she said.
My stomach dropped.
“I’m not going anywhere with you.”
For a moment, she just looked at me, mostly in disbelief, like she wasn't used to being told no.
Her grip tightened even more, just enough to make my breath hitch. And she lightly placed her other hand on my waist.
She brought her mouth close to my ear.
The sound of her licking her bottom lip and sighing at my disobedience just about made my eyes roll back.
“That wasn’t a request,” she said quietly and directly in my ear.
Heat rushed through me, sudden and disorienting.
Her grip on my waist tightened and she pulled me into her. I could feel myself starting to drip through my panties.
