Summary

A quiet village sits beside a river that changes with the seasons—and with the boy who tends it. He has always felt connected to the water, naming it, caring for it, watching it shimmer under his hands. But lately, the river has begun to act strangely. Its reflection no longer matches his own, and a strange mist rises from its surface, whispering things he can’t understand. One evening, he meets a girl by the river calm, ancient feeling, and untouched by the mist that terrifies him. She speaks as if she knows him, as if she has been waiting for him. When the mist pulls him into an illusion that twists the world around him, she stands in the center of it, unafraid. Shaken, he returns to his village, only to find it feels wrong too normal, too quiet, as if he no longer belongs there. Inside his tiny home, one question haunts him: “Who…no…what are you?” As memories begin to surface and the river’s secrets stir, the boy realizes the girl is connected to the mist and to him in ways he doesn’t yet understand. The truth he’s been avoiding is coming for him, and the river is no longer just water. It’s watching. It’s remembering. And it wants him to remember too. This is the story of River of Dreams.

Prologue

Dreams are like water flowing in an ever-ending river. All kinds of different dreams always float around in this river every day and every night. Spirits fly around to gather every dream they can find and place them into this river. Oh, how does this river get its name, River of Dreams? I will tell you, but come closer to me. Listen to the wind that blows and howl to you, even the sky was so clear that you could see the stars that night. Each spirit, element, plant, and animal will tell you a different story. I will tell you a story now, so listen up, listen carefully. I will tell you the story of how the River of Dreams got its name, but I will only tell you that story once.
