Chapter 1: The Silent Vipers

Snow drifted across the abandoned industrial district on the outskirts of Saint Petersburg, concealing the frozen streets beneath a blanket of white. The silence was broken only by the low rumble of three matte-black SUVs as they rolled to a stop outside an abandoned warehouse.

Five figures stepped out.

Dressed in black tactical uniforms, they blended seamlessly into the darkness. The only mark on their clothing was a silver snowflake stitched onto each shoulder—the emblem of the Black Winter Directorate, an organization whose existence was known only to a select few.

Among its many divisions, one name inspired both fear and respect.

Directorate Zero.

And among its operatives, none were more lethal than Unit Viper.

Leading the team was Captain Aleksei Orlov.

At twenty-nine years old, he was the youngest captain in Directorate Zero and the heir to the Black Winter Directorate. Tall, composed, and unreadable, Aleksei was known for completing missions with absolute precision. His orders were never questioned because they had never led his team to failure.

His icy blue eyes settled on the warehouse.

"Report."

A calm voice answered through the encrypted earpiece.

"Perimeter secured."

Several hundred meters away, lying motionless atop an abandoned factory, Dmitri Sokolov, Unit Viper's sniper, observed the warehouse through the scope of his rifle.

"Four guards outside," he reported. "Six inside. No signs they've detected us."

Every movement within the compound reflected in his scope. If anyone attempted to escape, Dmitri would see them first.

Inside one of the command vehicles, dozens of monitors illuminated the face of Nadia Petrova, the team's cyber warfare specialist.

Her fingers danced effortlessly across the keyboard as encrypted code streamed down her screens.

"I'm inside their surveillance network."

One by one, the warehouse's cameras froze.

Motion sensors shut down.

Electronic locks disengaged.

"They're blind."

Near the main entrance, Roman Belov, Unit Viper's breaching and explosives expert, secured a compact shaped charge against the reinforced steel door.

Unlike ordinary explosives, Roman believed precision was more important than power. His charges created openings, not destruction.

He glanced toward Aleksei.

"Entry point ready."

Standing beside him, Kirill Makarov, the team's intelligence analyst, studied a holographic map projected from his tablet.

Red markers shifted continuously, tracing enemy patrol routes inside the building.

"They've changed formations twice in the last fifteen minutes," Kirill said quietly.

"They're waiting for someone."

Aleksei looked over his team.

Five operatives.

Five specialists.

Years of training had forged them into one of the most feared covert units in Europe.

"Our objective remains unchanged," Aleksei said.

"Recover the classified research."

He raised two fingers.

That single gesture was enough.

Like shadows swallowed by the night, Unit Viper disappeared into the warehouse grounds. The first guard never realized anyone had approached.

A gloved hand silenced him.

A precise strike to the neck rendered him unconscious before he could reach his radio.

Roman slipped through the breached entrance while Dmitri watched every window from his rooftop perch.

"Second floor clear," Dmitri reported.

Nadia's voice followed almost instantly.

"Two hostiles approaching the eastern corridor."

"Three..."

"Two..."

"One."

The moment the armed men rounded the corner, Aleksei stepped forward.

One swift movement sent the first guard crashing into the wall.

Roman intercepted the second before he could draw his weapon.

The hallway fell silent once more.

No alarms.

No gunfire.

Exactly as planned.

Guided by Kirill's intelligence and Nadia's surveillance, the team advanced deeper into the warehouse.

Every room was cleared with practiced efficiency.

Every obstacle disappeared before them.

Within minutes, they reached their destination.

The server room.

Rows of humming servers lined the walls, casting a pale blue glow across the otherwise dark chamber.

Kirill pointed toward a secured terminal.

"That's it."

Nadia remotely initiated the decryption sequence.

A loading bar appeared on the monitor.

Twenty percent.

Forty.

Sixty.

Ninety.

Everyone watched in silence.

Then—

The screen froze.

Nadia frowned.

"...That's impossible."

She restarted the bypass.

Nothing.

Again.

Still nothing.

Aleksei stepped closer.

"Status."

Nadia's expression hardened.

"The database is empty."

Roman frowned.

"What do you mean empty?"

Kirill immediately examined the system logs.

His face darkened.

"The files were removed."

"When?" Aleksei asked.

Nadia scanned the encrypted records one final time.

"Approximately three hours ago."

Silence filled the room.

They had arrived too late.

No...

They had been deliberately misled.

"It was a decoy," Roman muttered.

Kirill nodded.

"The real exchange happened somewhere else."

Aleksei remained as composed as ever.

"Track the research."

Without hesitation, Nadia redirected every available intelligence satellite connected to Black Winter.

Border crossings.

Private communications.

Financial transactions.

Flight records.

Thousands of encrypted signals flowed across her screens before narrowing into a single digital trail.

She followed it across country after country.

Russia.

Mongolia.

China.

The signal continued moving until, at last, it stopped.

A blinking red marker appeared on her monitor.

Nadia stared at it for a long moment.

Then she looked up.

"...South Korea."

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed your story. The world, the emotions, and the character interactions all felt very engaging. One of my favorite things was how easy it was to visualize every scene while reading. It has a very cinematic feel, and I can easily imagine how incredible it would look as a comic. Wishing you the best with the rest of your story!
