Chapter 1: The Moonfire Ceremony

The bloodred moon hung above the ritual square like an open wound in the sky. Thousands had gathered to witness the Moonfire Ceremony, the sacred ritual that had preserved peace between kingdoms for centuries. Lyra Ashvale stood alone on the cold stone dais, dressed in ceremonial white and trying not to run. At twenty-three, she should have been finishing her training as a healer. Instead, she was about to be sacrificed to magic.

The crowd below buzzed with excitement, thousands of voices rising into the night in celebration. To them, this ceremony was a blessing, a sacred promise that their children would never know war. They believed the Moonfire Bond would keep the Moon Kingdom at bay for another hundred years.

Lyra knew better.

Magic had never brought her anything except loss.

Years ago, it had torn through her village in a storm of fire and screams, leaving behind nothing but ash and silence. Even now, she could still see her mother’s outstretched hand disappearing beneath the flames whenever she closed her eyes.

She had chosen to become a healer because she wanted to mend what magic destroyed.

Tonight, standing beneath the blood-red moon, she had never felt more helpless.

The air began to smell sharp, like the air right before a big storm. This was the smell of magic waking up. Lyra held her white robes tightly. Her hands were shaking. She wanted to turn around and run back into the dark streets of her home, but she knew she couldn’t. If she left, the peace would break, and a war would start. The human world could not win a war against the Moon Kingdom.

Then, the big silver gates at the end of the square opened. Everyone went quiet. The warriors from the Moon Kingdom walked out first. Their armor looked as if it were made of moonlight and shadows. In the middle of them was Prince Kael Draven, the man everyone called the Devil Prince. The stories had painted Kael Draven as a monster. Reality was worse.

The Devil Prince was tall, broad-shouldered, and impossibly still, moving with the silent grace of a predator stalking through moonlit woods. Power rolled off him in icy waves, pressing against Lyra’s skin hard enough to steal her breath. His dark ceremonial armor gleamed like polished obsidian, and despite the warm summer night, frost crept across the stone beneath his boots.

As he ascended the dais, the temperature plummeted.

Winter had arrived.

Lyra forced herself to look into his eyes. They were a strange, pale silver color, like frozen pools of water. He didn’t look at her like a person. He looked at her like she was just a tool he needed for a job. Lyra felt a small, hot spark deep inside her own body. She had always felt a strange heat in her blood, but she had kept it hidden because she was afraid of it. Now, that heat was reacting to the Prince’s presence.

The High Priest raised his staff toward the blood moon, and the square fell silent. When he spoke, his voice echoed across the stone like distant thunder.

“By moonfire and blood, the ancient covenant shall be renewed. One daughter of mankind shall stand beside one son of the Moon Kingdom. Bound in soul and fate, they shall preserve the peace between our realms.”

He lowered his staff, his gaze sweeping over the gathered crowd.

“For should this bond fail, war shall return.”

The ritual grew more intense. The red moon started to glow so brightly it hurt to look at. Suddenly, a huge bolt of red and silver light shot down from the sky. It hit the center of the platform with a loud bang. Lyra screamed as the magic she hated so much forced its way into her body. It felt like a hot wire was being pulled through her bones. This was the Moonfire Bond a magical cord that would tie her soul to the Prince forever.

The people in the square began to cheer and shout. They were so happy because they thought they were safe for another century. They saw a beautiful wedding, but Lyra felt like she had been put into a cage. The light faded, leaving the square in a heavy silence. The ritual was over. Lyra Ashvale was no longer a simple healer. She was now the bride of the most feared man in the world.

She looked up at Kael. She expected him to look proud or happy that he had won. She thought he would look at her like he owned her. But when their eyes finally met, his cold mask completely fell away. His jaw was tight, and his eyes were wide with a deep, raw fear.

In that moment, Lyra realized something terrifying. The Devil Prince looked just as trapped as she felt. And whatever had bound them beneath the blood moon, it was not the blessing the kingdom believed it to be.
