Chapter One: The Man Everyone Feared
Rain lashed against the towering glass walls of Knight Global headquarters, blurring the city skyline into streaks of silver and charcoal. The building rose above the bustling streets like a monument to power, intimidating even from the outside.
Emma Brooks tightened her grip on the leather portfolio tucked beneath her arm as she stepped through the revolving doors. She took a slow breath, reminding herself why she was here.
This wasn’t just another job.
It was the opportunity she’d prayed for.
As the newly appointed Executive Assistant to the CEO of Knight Global, this position would allow her to pay for her mother’s medical treatment, keep her younger brother in university, and finally give her family the financial stability they’d lost years ago.
Failure wasn’t an option.
The marble lobby buzzed with quiet efficiency. Employees moved with purpose, their polished shoes clicking against the pristine floor. Behind the reception desk, a young woman looked up with a welcoming smile.
Good morning. You must be Emma Brooks.
Emma returned the smile. I am. Today’s my first day.
The receptionist’s expression softened for only a second before something almost like sympathy crossed her face.
Well... good luck.
Emma laughed lightly.
I will need it?
You will understand soon enough.
Before Emma could ask what, she meant, two employees hurried past, speaking in hushed voices.
He’s already in a terrible mood.
I heard three department heads have been waiting outside his office since eight.
They are probably about to lose their jobs.
Emma frowned.
Fired before nine in the morning?
The thought followed her into the executive elevator.
The higher it climbed, the quieter it became.
No one checked their phones.
No one made small talk.
Every face reflected the same emotion.
Tension.
When the doors opened onto the executive floor, Emma immediately understood why.
Luxury surrounded her.
Dark walnut panels lined the walls, interrupted by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city below. Modern artwork hung between discreet lighting fixtures, and every detail reflected impeccable taste and unimaginable wealth.
A distinguished woman in her fifties approached with measured confidence.
You must be Emma.
Yes.
I am Margaret.
She extended her hand.
I have worked for Mr. Adrian Knight for fourteen years.
Emma smiled warmly.
It’s wonderful to meet...
Margaret gently interrupted.
Before you go in, there’s something you should know.
Emma’s smile faded.
Mr. Knight expects perfection.
I always give my best.
Margaret offered a knowing smile.
No, dear, you don’t understand.
She folded her arms.
In the past two years...
She paused deliberately.
you are assistant number twenty-three.
Emma blinked.
Surely, she had misheard.
Twenty-three?
Margaret wasn’t joking.
Before Emma could ask another question, the heavy office doors swung open.
Three senior executives walked out in silence.
Their expensive suits couldn’t disguise the defeat written across their faces.
One loosened his tie with trembling fingers.
Another muttered, we are finished.
The third refused to look anyone in the eye.
The atmosphere turned heavy.
Then a deep voice echoed from the corner office.
Margaret.
Just one word.
Calm.
Controlled.
Yet powerful enough to command immediate obedience.
Margaret sighed softly.
That’s your cue.
She leaned closer.
One last piece of advice.
Emma waited.
He notices everything.
Emma nodded, squared her shoulders, and walked toward the imposing office doors.
She knocked twice.
Come in.
The office was breathtaking.
Glass walls overlooked the city from every angle. Bookshelves stretched from floor to ceiling, filled with business titles, biographies, and legal volumes. A massive black desk dominated the room, immaculate except for a neatly stacked collection of reports.
Behind it sat Adrian Knight.
He didn’t acknowledge her arrival.
Instead, he continued reviewing a document as though she didn’t exist.
Thirty uncomfortable seconds passed.
Then another.
Emma remained standing.
Finally, without lifting his eyes from the report, he spoke.
You are late.
Emma frowned.
My reporting time was nine o’clock.
It is.
He glanced at the watch on his wrist.
You arrived at eight fifty-eight.
That’s two minutes early.
You should have been here by eight-thirty.
Only then did he look at her.
His piercing gray eyes were unreadable.
Sharp.
Calculating.
The kind of gaze that made seasoned executives second-guess themselves.
Most people would have apologized.
Emma wasn’t most people.
Then perhaps the onboarding email should have stated eight-thirty.
Silence settled between them.
Adrian leaned back slightly, studying her.
No one corrected him.
Not even members of his board.
Yet this woman had done so within her first minute inside his office.
You think you are clever.
Emma met his gaze without hesitation.
I think clear expectations prevent unnecessary misunderstandings.
For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Adrian stood.
He was taller than she’d expected, broad-shouldered, effortlessly commanding.
He walked around the desk until only a few feet separated them.
You know why my assistants never last?
No.
They mistake confidence for competence.
Emma held his gaze.
I don’t.
His eyebrow lifted.
Oh?
I believe competence speaks for itself.
Something shifted in his expression.
It wasn’t approval.
It certainly wasn’t amusement.
It was curiosity.
A notification sounded from his tablet.
He glanced down.
Cancel my lunch.
Emma looked at the day’s schedule.
You have a board meeting at noon.
I know.
And a video conference with your London investors at two.
I know.
Emma hesitated for only a second.
There’s another issue.
His eyes returned to hers.
The itinerary your office prepared for tomorrow’s flight is incorrect.
It isn’t.
Emma calmly opened the portfolio she had been carrying.
It is.
She laid the revised itinerary on his desk and pointed to a highlighted section.
The airline changed your departure yesterday evening. If you follow the original schedule, you will arrive after your keynote presentation has already begun.
The office fell silent.
Adrian compared the documents before reaching for his phone.
Daniel.
A pause.
What time is tomorrow’s flight?
He listened.
His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.
I see.
He ended the call.
Emma remained silent.
She had made her point without saying another word.
Adrian looked at her for a long moment.
You have been here less than ten minutes.
Yes.
And you have already discovered a mistake my executive team overlooked.
Apparently.
A flicker of reluctant respect crossed his face.
Without another word, he picked up a thick black folder and slid it across the desk.
If you are as capable as you believe...
He met her eyes.
...prove it.
Emma opened the folder.
Her heartbeat stopped.
Across the first page, stamped in bold red letters, was a single word.
CONFIDENTIAL
Her eyes moved lower.
Proposed Acquisition of Brooks Media Group
The air left her lungs.
Brooks.
Her father’s company.
The business her family had lost after his death.
Slowly, she looked up.
Adrian was watching her.
Every blink.
Every breath.
Every tiny change in her expression.
He had no idea why the color had drained from her face.
But before the day was over...
He was about to discover that hiring Emma Brooks had just become the most dangerous decision of his career.

Great start. Loving Emma already.
Love the introduction of the 2 main characters
I, personally, would have liked to see "quotations" where the characters are speaking
