Chapter 1

Vespera breathes.

Across endless fields of gold, the wind moves gently through the crops, bending millions of stalks in a slow, endless rhythm.

From the highest peaks of the western ranges to the distant shores of the southern seas, the planet stretches beneath the warmth of its sun, alive and thriving.

The air carries the scent of grain.

Fresh. Earthy. Familiar.

It is the smell of home.

For generations, Vespera has been a world of abundance. Its vast agricultural plains feed entire sectors of the Imperium, its harvest ships departing every cycle laden with the fruits of its soil.

From orbit, the planet appears untouched by the wars that consume the wider galaxy, a world of green valleys, golden fields, and peaceful cities scattered beneath endless skies.

The people of Vespera wake with the rising sun.

Farmers walk among the crops, inspecting the harvests their families have tended for generations. Workers in the great processing cities maintain the machines that keep the planet alive. Merchants fill the plazas, trading goods beneath banners bearing the symbol of the Imperium.

Children laugh in the streets. They chase one another through the shadows of towering monuments dedicated to the God-Emperor, their voices echoing between white stone buildings warmed by the afternoon light.

The statues watch over them.

Silent.

Unmoving.

Eternal.

To the people of Vespera, the Emperor’s protection is not a distant promise. It is a certainty. The wars of the galaxy exist, of course. They hear stories.

Every merchant vessel brings rumours from distant worlds. Tales of alien invasions. Of entire civilizations lost beneath the hunger of unknown creatures. Of soldiers fighting and dying on worlds whose names mean nothing to those who live here.

But those are other worlds. Other people. Other wars.

Vespera is safe.

The sky above the planet remains clear. No enemy fleet darkens the heavens. No alarms sound across the cities. No one looks toward the stars with fear. Because why would they?

The Imperium is vast.

The Emperor protects.

And on this day, beneath the golden light of Vespera’s sun, nobody knows that something has already begun moving in the silence between the stars.

Something patient.

Something ancient.

Something hungry.

And yet, even paradise requires guardians.

Deep beneath the eastern continent, far below the golden fields and peaceful settlements, the defence command of Vespera remains awake.

The fortress does not sleep.

It cannot.

While farmers rest beneath warm skies and families gather beneath the Emperor’s statues, the men and women of the planetary defence forces watch the heavens.

Not because they expect war but because the galaxy has taught them never to assume peace will last.

Commander Marcus Vale has spent twenty-three years watching the stars.

He has seen the aftermath of battles fought light-years away. He has received evacuation orders from worlds that no longer existed by the time help arrived. He has read reports of horrors most citizens of Vespera would never believe.

But he has never seen those horrors come here.

Not to Vespera.

Not once.

An alert appears on the terminal. Just a routine communication notice.

“Missing cargo vessel”“Vessel: Aurelia’s Grace”“Scheduled arrival: 03:40”“Status: Missing”

Marcus stares at the message. For several moments, he says nothing. Ships disappear all the time. Everyone knows that.

The Imperium is vast. The void between stars is dangerous. Pirates, storms, mechanical failures, navigational errors, there are a thousand reasons a vessel might fail to arrive. A missing ship is unfortunate but it is not unusual.

He leans forward and enters the report into the system.

“Lost vessel. Awaiting confirmation”

Then he moves on. Because there are always other problems. Always other duties. Always another day. But as he turns away from the terminal, the message remains on the screen. A small line of text glowing in the dark. A single unanswered question. Where did theAurelia’s Gracego?

The question remains on the screen for only a few seconds before protocol takes over. A missing vessel triggers procedure. Not panic. Not fear. Procedure.

The command staff of Vespera has dealt with lost ships before. The void between worlds is vast, and even the mightiest vessels of the Imperium are fragile things when surrounded by the endless silence between stars.

Search protocols are initiated. The astropathic choirs attempt contact. The last known coordinates are reviewed. The vessel’s machine spirit is questioned for any sign of malfunction. Every possibility is considered. And every possibility has an explanation. A navigational error. A mechanical failure. A warp disturbance. A thousand things can happen to a ship in the void. The report is marked accordingly.

“Missing”“Investigation pending”

The people of Vespera continue their lives. The harvest continues. The markets remain open. The bells of the Emperor’s temples continue to ring.

Over the next three days, nothing happens. Then another transmission appears on the terminal. Commander Marcus Vale notices it before anyone calls his name. He doesn’t know why. Perhaps it is instinct. Perhaps twenty-three years of watching the stars has taught him to recognize when something does not belong. The message is simple.

No warning.

No emergency signal.

No explanation.

Only a single message blinking on the terminal.

“Missing trade vessel”“Vessel: The Merchant of Antagonis”“Scheduled arrival: 15:25”“Status: Missing”

Marcus stares at the screen. For several moments, he says nothing. Around him, the command center continues its work. Officers speak, servitors process data. The great machines of the fortress hum beneath the surface of a peaceful world.

Nobody else reacts, not yet. One missing ship is unfortunate, but two missing ships, this close to Vespera, that is something else.

Marcus opens the Merchant of Antagonis’s flight records. A civilian transport. Routine cargo route with no military escort. There are no known hazards along its path. There is no reason it should have failed to arrive. His fingers move across the console. He pulls up the Aurelia’s Grace report. The two routes appear side by side. Two ships. Two separate departures. Two separate destinations. But the same point of disappearance. Both near Vespera. The same silence. The same absence.

Marcus feels something tighten in his chest. Not fear. Not yet. A warning. A feeling he has learned to trust. Something is wrong. He does not know what. He does not know why. But the galaxy has a way of announcing its disasters before they arrive, and this feels like the first whisper.

The second report remains open on Marcus Vale’s terminal long after the room around him has moved on. He closes the file. Not because he is satisfied. Because there is nothing else to find. No wreckage. No distress signal. No explanation. Only silence.

For another day, Vespera continues as it always has. The sun rises. The fields move beneath the wind. The cities remain unchanged. But the quiet certainty Marcus once carried begins to fade. Not fear. Not yet. A soldier does not survive twenty-three years by fearing every shadow. But experience leaves marks. And experience tells him that disasters rarely arrive all at once. They begin with warnings. Small ones. Easy to ignore. Until they are impossible to deny.

The first alert from Harrow’s Rest arrives at 04:17 local time. A remote agricultural settlement located beyond the eastern plains. The message is classified as routine.

“Wildlife disturbance”

Nothing more.

Vespera’s frontier settlements deal with such incidents regularly. The wilderness beyond the cultivated regions is vast, and the planet is home to countless species that have adapted to its harsh environments. A damaged perimeter. A lost herd. A frightened worker. These things happen. But Marcus notices something unusual. The report was not submitted by a frightened farmer. It came from the settlement security office. And it contains one sentence.

“-Unknown activity observed beyond the perimeter”

Marcus reads it twice. Then he opens the settlement’s recent records. Nothing. No predator attacks. No geological disturbances. No unusual weather. Nothing that explains why a trained security officer would send the warning. His hand moves toward the communication channel.

“Establish direct contact with Harrow’s Rest.”

The reply comes quickly.

“Attempting connection.”

The screen flickers. The vox line opens. For a moment, there is only static. Then a voice. Faint. Distorted. Afraid.

“Command... this is Harrow’s Rest...”

A pause. A sound in the background. Not clear enough to identify. But loud enough to make everyone in the command room stop. The officer continues.

“We need—”

The signal breaks. The vox fills with interference. Then silence. The vox channel remains open. But no voice answers. Only static. Commander Marcus Vale watches the communication display.

“Attempt reconnection.”

The communications officer hesitates.

“Sir?”

“Again.”Vale commands.

The officer obeys. The system searches for the settlement beacon. For the first few seconds, there is nothing. Then, a faint signal. Barely detectable. The vox activates.

“—mand...”

The voice is broken. Distant. Like it is coming through a storm. Marcus leans closer.

“Chief Voss, this is Commander Vale. Confirm your status.”

Static. A pause. Then a reply.

“Commander...”

The voice is strained. Marcus notices it immediately. Not panic. Not confusion. Fear.

“What happened?”

Another burst of interference. For a moment, the command center hears something else. A sound in the background. Metal twisting. Something heavy moving. Then the transmission clears.

“Commander... we saw something beyond the eastern perimeter.”

Marcus remains silent.

“What did you see?”

There is a pause, longer this time. When Chief Voss answers, his voice is quieter.

“I don’t know.”

The words hang in the air.

“I don’t know what it was.”

The signal breaks.

“Chief Voss?”

Static.

“Chief Voss?”

Nothing. The connection dies. The command center falls silent. Marcus looks at the two missing vessels on his terminal. Then at the Harrow’s Rest communication failure.

Three incidents. Three unanswered questions. The galaxy is full of dangers. But coincidence has a limit.

“Establish a priority channel to Lord Commander Thorne.”

The communications officer looks up from the console.

“Sir?”

Marcus does not take his eyes from the display.

“You heard me.”

The officer hesitates.

“That channel is reserved for planetary-level emergencies.”

Marcus finally turns.

“And what would you call multiple missing vessels and a settlement that has stopped responding?”

The officer says nothing. The command center moves faster. Systems are activated. Encrypted channels are opened.

A few minutes pass before the holographic projection stabilizes. The face of General Cassian Thorne appears above the command table. Older than Marcus. More experienced. A man who has spent decades defending Vespera’s borders and who has seen enough false alarms to distrust every warning.

“Commander Vale.”

“General.”

Thorne studies him.

“Explain.”

Marcus brings the reports onto the display.

“The Aurelia’s Grace failed to arrive three days ago.”

A second file appears.

“The Marchant of Antagonis has also disappeared.”

Thorne watches silently.

“Lost ships are not uncommon.”

“No, sir.”

Marcus pauses.

“However, Harrow’s Rest has now lost communication.”

The general’s expression changes slightly.

“Reason?”

“Unknown.”

“Casualties?”

“Unknown.”

“Threat assessment?”

Marcus looks at the final broken transmission, the words of Chief Voss still echo in his mind.

I don’t know what it was.

“Unknown.”

The answer hangs between them. Thorne leans back. For a moment, neither man speaks.

Then:

“What are you requesting, Commander?”

Marcus does not hesitate.

“Authorization to deploy a security detachment to Harrow’s Rest.”

“To investigate?”

"Yes, sir."

A pause.

“And I am requesting command of the operation.”

The general raises an eyebrow.

“You believe this requires your direct involvement?”

Marcus looks back toward the terminal, toward the silence.

“Yes, sir.”

Another moment passes, then Thorne nods.

“Granted.”

The transmission flickers slightly.

“Take a full security detail. Establish contact. Assess the situation. Recover any civilians.”

A pause.

“And Commander?”

“Sir?”

“Find out what happened.”

The channel closes. The command center returns to life. Orders begin moving through the fortress. Personnel are mobilized. Vehicles prepared. The investigation begins.
