*Chapter 1: The Night the Lie Died*

Rain hammered against the floor to ceiling windows of Nyx's penthouse, turning the city into a smear of gold and blood red neon.

Nathan sat on the edge of her couch, a glass of whiskey untouched in his hand. He'd come here to talk her out of another late night at the warehouse. Again.

"Go home, Nathan," she said, not looking at him. She was cleaning a gun on her glass coffee table. The sound of oil on steel was too familiar between them. Too normal.

"I said no last time. You're not sleeping here."

A smirk tugged at her lips, but it didn't reach her eyes. "And you're still trying to parent me at thirty two."

Before he could answer, the lock on the fire escape door shattered.

Glass exploded. Three men in black, faces covered, stormed in with silenced pistols raised. Ethan's calling card.

"Down!" Nyx moved faster than Nathan had ever seen. She shoved him behind the couch, her own weapon up, firing in one motion.

The apartment erupted.

Gunfire. Shouts in Italian. The smell of cordite and burnt carpet. Nathan hit the floor, heart slamming against his ribs. He wasn't built for this. He was a criminal defense lawyer. He argued in courtrooms, not against them.

"Nyx!"

"Stay down!"

Two of her men came through the front door like ghosts, Jason in the lead. He moved through the room with brutal efficiency. Thirty seconds. It was over. Three bodies, one bleeding out on her Persian rug.

Silence crashed back in, heavy and wrong.

Nyx stood over the last man, her heel pressing into his throat. Blood dripped from her temple, but her hands were steady.

"Who sent you?" she asked, voice low. Cold.

The man spat blood. "Ethan says... hello, Don."

Don.

Nathan's breath caught.

Nyx's head snapped up. Her eyes found his. For half a second, the mask slipped. Fear. Not for herself. For him.

Jason followed her gaze. "Boss?"

"Get them out," she said quietly. "All of it."

When the room was clean and the bodies were gone, she turned to Nathan. He was still on the floor, staring at her like she was a stranger.

"Explain," he said. His voice didn't shake. That was worse.

Nyx wiped her face with the back of her hand, leaving a smear of blood and soot. She didn't deny it. She couldn't.

"I'm not who you think I am, Nathan."

"No shit," he said. He stood, slowly. "You're the Don. Of the Volkov family."

She nodded once.

"All these years. All the 'late nights at work.' You lied to me."

"I protected you."

"By lying?" He laughed, but there was no humor in it. "You put a target on my back just by knowing you. Do you know what he'll do to me now?"

"I know." She stepped forward. "Which is why you're marrying me."

Nathan stopped. "What?"

"Marriage to me puts you under my protection. No one touches a Volkov spouse. Not even Ethan."

He stared at her like she'd lost her mind. "I'm not marrying you, Nyx. Not like this. Not to save myself from your mess."

Her jaw tightened. "You don't have a choice."

"Oh, I think I do."

Nyx's eyes darkened. She pulled a phone from her pocket and held it up. On the screen was a photo of Nathan leaving his apartment that morning.

"Ethan knows who you are now. He'll find you before dawn. You can marry me tonight, or I can start picking up your pieces tomorrow."

The room went cold.

Nathan looked at her really looked. At the blood on her face, the gun still in her hand, the woman he'd known since college and the monster she'd become to survive.

He hated her in that moment.

"Fine," he said. "But don't pretend this is love, Nyx. This is a cage."

Her expression didn't change. But something behind her eyes did.

"Then I'll make sure you never want to leave it."
