Chapter 1: Echoes in the Dark
The neon hum of the underground archive flickered against the reinforced steel walls, casting cold, bleeding shadows across the concrete floor. Dante Vance stood motionless before the towering neural-stream display, his dark eyes locked onto the jagged telemetry data flatlining across the screen. Julian’s consciousness was fading into absolute nothingness, a digital flatline that felt entirely too final.
In Dante’s world, information was currency, and human memory was a commodity traded and wiped by the syndicate. But a standard assassination? Rare. Julian hadn’t just been killed—his entire digital existence, his memories, his very identity, were being methodically erased from the core database. Piece by piece, his brother was being unmade by someone with maximum-level clearance.
The heavy steel doors hissed open, breaking the tense, sterile silence of the vault. Lorenzo stepped out from the shadows, his expression grim and tight as he shoved a struggling, desperate figure forward into the harsh blue light.
Lorenzo
Boss. We secured her from the lower district right before the scrubbers could wipe her apartment clean.
Dante turned slowly. The fury coiling in his chest was absolute, lethal, and freezing cold. He had sworn to rip apart anyone responsible for his brother's final moments, and now, the first tangible piece of the puzzle had been dropped right at his feet.
He stepped out from the darkness, towering over the small, trembling woman pushed onto the cold floor. Elena stood wrapped in a deep green velvet coat, her dark hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. Her face was stark white, and her eyes were wide with a raw, shattering panic. Yet, as she lifted her chin to meet his terrifying gaze, there was a fierce, unbroken spark burning beneath her fear that caught him completely off guard.
Elena
(Her voice shaking, fighting desperately to keep her ground)
Where is he? They told me Julian was in the hospital, but your men—they dragged me down here like common criminals. What is going on?
Dante Vance
(Stepping inches away, his voice a low, gravelly rasp carrying the scent of rain and sweet jasmine)
Julian is gone. And you were the only person standing beside him when his neural imprint was wiped from existence. Tell me why I shouldn't let my syndicate tear the secrets right out of your mind and leave you empty.
Elena
(Gasping, backing up until Lorenzo's heavy hand blocks her exit)
Erased? No—I loved him! I don't know anything about a code, I swear to God!
Dante Vance
Everyone lies to survive.
(Reaching out, his calloused fingers grip her chin, forcing her face up so he can search her eyes for deception. Her skin is burning warm, her pulse hammering wildly against his thumb.)
(Instead of shrinking away, Elena strikes out with surprising strength, slapping his hand aside as her chest heaves with fierce indignation.)
Elena
Then do it! Scan me, wipe me, kill me! I watched the man I loved lose his mind before he even drew his last breath, and you think I helped them? Look around you! The monsters who did this aren't standing in front of you—they're wearing your pins! They're inside your own empire!
The room fell dead silent.
Dante froze. Inside his own empire. It wasn't just a desperate cry for mercy; it was a chilling, tactical confirmation of the internal betrayal he had suspected for weeks.
As he stared down at her, the lethal anger inside her shifted into something far more dangerous. He realized Elena wasn't an enemy. She was the only tether left to his brother—and the primary target of the very traitors trying to overthrow him from within.
He gripped the edge of the console until his knuckles turned pure white. Vengeance had been his only purpose, but looking into her defiant eyes, Dante knew the rules had changed forever. He wasn't just going to hunt down the rats. He was going to burn the whole world down to keep her alive.
