The Call That Changed Everything
Doctor Tara
Dr. Tara stepped out of the operation theatre, slowly pulling off her gloves, faintly stained with blood. The surgery had been long—but successful.
She walked to the sink and splashed cold water on her face.
When she looked up, her reflection met her eyes in the mirror.
Her dark eyes looked tired, yet sharp. She had always loved them. They carried a quiet determination.
Her gaze shifted to her hands.
The same hands that had just held a human heart and fought to keep it beating.
At thirty-one, Tara had become exactly what she had once dreamed of—a cardiologist. After completing her twelfth grade, she had moved to Germany and worked relentlessly to reach this point.
She had everything she once wanted.
Or at least... she thought she did.
"Tara ma'am..."
She turned.
"Raghu?"
Her assistant stood at the door, looking unusually nervous.
"Bolo, Raghu," she said, drying her hands with a towel. (Speak, Raghu.)
"Ma'am... mujhe aapse kuch kehna hai." (Ma'am... I need to tell you something.)
"What is it?"
He hesitated.
"Ma'am... your parents... there was an accident."
Her breath caught.
"And... they are no more."
For a moment, the world fell silent.
Raghu slowly handed her the phone.
It began ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
But Tara didn't pick it up.
She couldn't.
Her throat tightened, as if the air itself refused to pass through.
Raghu's voice sounded distant.
"Ma'am... please... sambhaliye apne aap ko." (Ma'am... please... take care of yourself.)
The phone kept ringing.
It was her brother calling.
But Tara slowly slid down the wall and sat on the floor, her knees pulled to her chest.
Her mind refused to accept what she had just heard.
It had to be a mistake.
It had to be.
But somewhere deep inside, she knew
the truth was waiting for her on the other side of that call.
