Summary

About the author: Grover has said he didn’t start this project to defend Aha Gazelle (Williams Trillington Jr.). He started it because he noticed that there were a lot of artists who were defined by the loudest voices and not the realest ones. Grover Wolpert was never neutral in any of his documents and always made or had a connection with the artists he’s talking about, and this is no different with Aha Gazelle. He grew up listening to Aha’s music and loving everything he dropped. Grover Wolpert is a super fan of Aha Gazelle, but also a fair critic—one who refuses to let lazy narratives, uninformed criticism, or outright stupidity define another artist’s career. Not again. That’s what sets him apart from other writers. Now, without further ado, this is The Story Of Williams Trillington Jr.

Who Is Aha Gazelle?

Born in 1986 and raised in Oklahoma City, Williams Trillington Jr. (professionally known as Aha Gazelle) started his career at the age of 14 with two defining singles: “My Game,” Aha’s first single, and “My 🎮🎮,” a song he featured on with the now-famous PiC Da RaPpEr. He made them with a small group of friends who are somewhat adored by fans; people who somehow get their hands on these singles nowadays are also praised for finding such a rare piece, especially in physical media.

With these uploads, he actually got a little buzz and received a gracious hand from Z’NJ to feature with him on a song called “🟡💡,” though most people just call it “Yellow Light.” He was crowned “Rookie of Tomorrow” by the people and almost even won the Best New Artist award. This experience made Williams admire rap even more, along with his friends.

Aha Gazelle said this in an interview:

“Ay, Z’NJ is an amazing person man. I love him for putting me into the big stage of rap. At first I was just making music for fun with friends. Never thought it would turn out to like this, to be completely honest with you”

He went on to say,

“I feel like rap has been my comfort ever since.”

He said this in an interview to promote his debut EP

More Of You

"More Of You is the personification of a consistent jazzy classic that leaves an amazing taste in your mouth."—Willson McCoy

This EP takes major inspiration from the feature that threw him right into the action of rap (🟡💡), using expression—not through punctuation—but through emojis and creativity that people had never seen before, even to this day.

Amazing songs like “🔥🔥,” (Fire) “❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥,” (Burning Desire) and “🎯🎯” (Target Practice) were praised for their lyrical prowess and groovy slowed production by, the now well-known producer, Akari. Especially “🎯🎯,” which won Record of the Year, as well as earning a nomination for its sequel, “🎯🎯 2” (Target Practice 2) the next year!

Another song from the EP, “❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹,” (Healing Heart) won Best Rap Song, earning Aha his second Grammy award. However, this win became more infamous due to people saying that “❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹” didn’t deserve the award. Most people felt that Aha himself deserved it—they just didn’t like the fact that he won it from a song they didn’t absolutely adore like "❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥."

This marked the first year of Aha’s career.

(2000–2001)

Track list: 🎯🎯, ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥, ❤️❤️, 💔💔, ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹, 🔥🔥

Brief: There was no story in the literal sense, but most people agree with this take: “There is more than a story in the album... it’s called truth and soul.”

After this, Williams went on a singles spree (after a three-month break), testing genres and trying to get better at music. This produced the hit single “TAKE THE 🎮,” which took upbeat hip-hop and turned it into something even the most quality-focused and nitpicky listeners could enjoy. Through quirky lyricism and a banger stage performance it won Best Rap Performance. To this day, some people think this is his best single... Which is EXTREMELY debatable though especially with his later work.

“Nacs” was another single from this period that people enjoyed, and it still has controversy surrounding it due to its name.

Aha said this in an interview:

“Nacs was a, uh, confusing song even for me, the creator, hahaha! It was supposed to be an abbreviation for something, but I knew I’d forget it, sooo it remains a mystery. (Aha laughs)"

People believe it may be a play on the popular song “Rap Snacks” by Mag Catz due to a line in the song.

"This might be some of the pressure from the city that I came from, gotta lose weight, but these Rap Snacks delicious (TASTY), look into my private life, know the fridge filled with the candy bruh, now I'm airing all that stuff out get the candy and put in the blunderbuss, so I saying get the hell out to sweet rappers in my home bruh! (Oklahoma!)"

The abbreviation remains unknown to this day, but uhh still a pretty good song nonetheless.

Songs from this singles spree were TAKE THE 🎮, 🎯🎯 2, open 👐, and Nacs.
