The case begins
The rain fell steadily across the city as Detective Arthur Bennett sat alone in his office. His brown hair, now touched with gray after years of detective work, was neatly combed. He wore an all-black suit, his glasses rested comfortably on his face, and a hot cup of coffee steamed on the corner of his desk.
For more than thirty years, Arthur had solved some of the city's toughest mysteries. But he had learned one thing—every case had a story, and every story began with a single clue.
A sharp knock echoed through the office.
"Come in," Arthur called.
Officer Harris Williams stepped inside carrying a thick brown case file.
"Morning, Detective," Harris said. "The chief wants you on a new case."
Arthur accepted the folder and opened it.
The first page contained a photograph of a Black teenage girl named Gemma Carter. She had wavy brown hair, warm brown eyes, and wore a beautiful blue dress covered with butterfly designs. She smiled brightly in the picture, unaware that it would soon become the most important photograph in the city.
Under the picture were the words:
MISSING FOR 48 HOURS
Arthur's smile disappeared.
"What do we know?" he asked.
Harris sat down.
"Gemma disappeared after leaving a community fundraiser at Westbrook High School two nights ago. Her parents reported her missing when she never came home. No one has seen her since."
Arthur looked at Gemma's photograph for several seconds.
"Any witnesses?"
"A few," Harris replied. "Most remember seeing her outside the school. One person reported a black SUV parked nearby, but no one could identify the driver."
Arthur stood and walked to the large investigation board hanging on the wall.
He pinned Gemma's photograph in the very center.
Around it, he added a city map, copies of witness statements, photographs from the school parking lot, and handwritten notes. Red string connected every piece of evidence.
Harris studied the board.
"Where do we start?"
Arthur crossed his arms.
"With the last place she was seen."
Before they could leave, the office telephone rang.
Arthur answered.
"Detective Bennett."
For a few seconds, there was only silence.
Then a deep, distorted voice spoke.
"If you want to keep your partner alive... stop looking for Gemma."
The line went dead.
Arthur slowly lowered the phone.
Harris looked concerned.
"What happened?"
Arthur met his eyes.
"Someone knows we're investigating."
A chill settled over the room.
Arthur wrote the phone number on a notepad, but it simply read:
Unknown Caller.
He grabbed his coat.
"We're going to Westbrook High."
As they walked toward the door, Arthur glanced back at the case board.
Gemma's smiling photograph stood out among the papers and red string.
"I promise," he whispered quietly, "we're going to find you."
Outside, dark clouds rolled across the sky.
Neither Arthur nor Harris realized that someone was watching them from a parked black SUV across the street.
As the detectives drove away, the mysterious vehicle quietly pulled out and followed them.
The investigation had officially begun.
