Goodnight, Room 204

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

Hospital corridors always had a way of becoming colder and quieter after nightfall. For Hannah, a nurse who had devoted years of her life to caring for others, the end of every shift was marked by a ritual she never allowed herself to skip. At exactly nine o'clock each night, she would stop in front of Room 204. Two gentle knocks. Then, almost in a whisper— "Goodnight, Room 204." The room had been empty for five years. Its door remained locked, untouched, and forgotten by almost everyone. Almost. Most of her colleagues dismissed the habit as nothing more than lingering trauma—a quiet wound left behind by a past Hannah had never truly escaped. No one questioned it anymore. Until a new patient in the room across the hall began noticing the strange ritual. His simple curiosity unraveled a long-buried secret that would forever change the way everyone inside the hospital understood loss, duty, and the quiet humanity that existed beyond medicine.

The Echo of Nine O'Clock

The third-floor corridor of St. Jude Hospital always felt different as the clock inched closer to nine o'clock at night.

The chatter that had filled the halls during visiting hours slowly dissolved, replaced by the steady hum of the air conditioning. The sharp scent of antiseptic mingled with the faint aroma of pine floor cleaner, while the fluorescent lights overhead dimmed to half their brightness, casting long, quiet shadows across the polished hallway.

At the nurses' station, Hannah organized the last of her patients' charts before ending her shift.

Her pale blue scrubs were slightly wrinkled after eight exhausting hours spent on her feet—administering medication, checking vital signs, and comforting patients through another difficult day. Her dark blonde hair was neatly tied into a low ponytail, framing a face that remained calm despite the exhaustion lingering beneath her eyes.

"Heading home already, Han?"

Sarah, the night-shift nurse, approached with a thermal mug of coffee warming her hands.

Hannah offered a small smile and nodded.

"Yeah. My shift's over. I've updated the reports for Rooms 201 through 208."

"Perfect. Drive safely."

"I will. Have a good shift."

Sarah disappeared into the medication room while Hannah slipped the strap of her shoulder bag over her shoulder and pulled her gray knitted cardigan a little tighter against the evening chill.

Then she started walking down the third-floor corridor.

The soft rhythm of her leather boots echoed against the gleaming vinyl floor.

She should have turned toward the elevators at the end of the hall.

Instead...

she slowed.

Her footsteps came to a stop in front of a weathered white wooden door.

A small metal plaque beside it read:

**204**

The room was completely dark.

Through the frosted glass panel, nothing could be seen except darkness. No monitors humming. No soft glow from a bedside lamp. No sign that anyone had occupied the room in years.

Room 204 had been locked for the past five years.

Officially, it had long since been converted into a storage room.

Unofficially...

everyone simply pretended it didn't exist.

Hannah stood silently before the door.

She closed her eyes for a brief moment, drew in a slow breath, and lifted her hand.

Knock.

Knock.

Two gentle taps echoed through the empty hallway.

Then she smiled—the warmest smile she'd worn all day.

Looking toward the narrow gap beneath the door, she whispered softly,

"Goodnight, Room 204."

Her voice was barely louder than the whisper of the air conditioner.

When the words faded into silence, Hannah let out a quiet breath, turned away, and continued walking toward the elevators without looking back.

She had no idea...

that someone had witnessed everything.

Across the hall, in Room 203, an elderly patient watched through a door left slightly ajar.

His name was Julian Carter.

Recently admitted for cardiac arrhythmia, sleep had refused to visit him that night.

From his bed, he had watched the exhausted young nurse stop before an empty room and greet it as though someone were still inside.

There had been nothing unsettling about the moment.

No madness.

No superstition.

Only a longing so profound...

and a tenderness that seemed impossible to explain.

Julian had lived long enough to recognize grief when he saw it.

And he knew that inside every hospital, the deepest mysteries were never hidden behind locked doors—

they were hidden inside hearts that had never truly healed.
