surprise party

[Sound: Telegram chime echo]

Dima [11:12 PM]

@zhenya WAKE UP. Did you secure the venue or are we turning our place into a crime scene tomorrow?

Mila [11:13 PM]

She's locked in her deep-work cave again. Pretty sure she hasn't blinked or left her ergonomic chair since 6 AM

Anya [11:15 PM]

100%. If anyone tries to pull her away from her AI predictive engine right now, she will literally execute them with her mechanical keyboard

Pasha [11:16 PM]

Code compiles clean, recommendation engine is smooth, But Zhenya won't stop until the restaurant AI model predicts 2 AM burrito cravings with perfect accuracy

Dima [11:17 PM]

Bro, I don't give a damn about burritos! Roma’s visa stamp officially CLEARED in Moscow! We're heading to a meeting there with an investor. He lands at SFO tomorrow at dusk. Hide the Fernet-Branca before he gets there or entire surprise ruined 😂

Mila [11:19 PM]

Wait... why is it still stuck on one checkmark for her? @zhenya pick up your damn phone!

Dima [11:50 PM]: I have a confession that will make Zhenya strangle me. I accidentally invited Roma's ex to the house for tomorrow night because I thought she was still in Berlin

Mila [11:51 PM]: Dima! Are you insane? Even Siberian tigers have better survival instincts! If Roma walks through that door after a twenty-hour flight and sees her sitting on our couch, he will turn around fly straight back to Russia

Dima [11:52 PM]: Siberian tigers know better than meee?

Anya [11:53 PM]: Relax, she declined. She is covering a gallery opening in Paris. But more importantly, why is Zhenya completely MIA? I know her restaurant algorithm Samaya is her baby, but we need to finalize food delivery before the liquor store closes

Pasha [12 AM]: She locked her phone in sleep mode three hours ago. Her code commits to the central repository have been firing every six minutes. She is optimizing the food-recommendation for Samaya AI

Dima [1 AM]: Someone break into her room and pull her out. We still have three crates of imported beer sitting in my trunk but I'm in Moscow so counting on u guys guys!!

Mila [1:30 AM]: She is probably listening to that repetitive techno track Roma gave her on repeat. When Zhenya gets into the zone, an earthquake could rattle the building and she would just keep typing Python program scripts

Anya [1:45 AM]: @Zhenya if you do not respond in five minutes, I am posting your embarrassing university photos to the main company chat

Pasha [1:50 AM]: She's been having trouble focusing since Roma’s been gone. They're inseparable! Do not disturb her yet. The neural network accuracy score just jumped two percent. Let the founder cook

Dima [2:10 AM]: Fine, but if Roma arrives to an empty house with no DJ booth set up, I am blaming the artificial intelligence

2’30 a.m. on a Friday night, and the Samaya team was still texting and hunched over their laptops in the SoMa house. They'd converted into a bullpen, three long tables pushed together under harsh overhead lights, with a whiteboard covered in half-erased neural net diagrams and a dead drooping ficus nobody had watered since they'd gotten Samaya, their AI restaurant referral chatbot app accepted by the famous N Incubator in San Francisco.

Other restaurant referral apps forced hungry users to scroll through 300 hundred conflicting reviews from angry strangers, while reservation apps required tedious manual tapping through rigid reservation grids.

Samaya was different because it actually spoke back. Designed as an AI intelligent conversational chatbot, Samaya skipped the endless menus, search filters, and five-star rating systems entirely. A user could simply say or type a craving into their phone like talking to a knowledgeable local friend, asking for an intimate spot in SoMa with authentic fish tacos open past midnight. The natural AI language engine processed the subtle context, picked the single ideal match based on real-time kitchen availability, and booked the reservation directly through interactive speech and text.

The whole team had moved from Moscow to San Francisco to build this dream, trading bitter winter cold for damp coastal fog. Some of them still missed Russia, but they were all enjoying their creative freedom! They were convinced that conversational AI was about to revolutionize how humans interacted with software.

[Sound: Server cooling fan whirring under high processing load]

Pasha leaned over Mila's shoulder, pointing at the terminal screen where their latest speech synthesis model was parsing raw voice audio clips.

"The other apps treat people like data entry clerks," Pasha said with a quiet laugh, resting his hand on the back of her wooden chair. "We are teaching computers how to have a real human conversation."

Mila looked up at his smiling face, knowing that their late-night hustle was the start of something that would redefine their lives forever.

Pasha popped the cap of Baltika #9, one of his favorite Russian beers, a strong pale ale brewed in St Petersburg. He looked in the direction of Roma and Zhenya’s room. The sliding door was cracked. He frowned slightly. She had been holed up there since Roma left to get his work visa in Moscow.

“It's lucky he's coming back tomorrow,” Pasha said quietly. Nobody responded and everyone kept working but Mila smirked and playfully grabbed a sip of his beer.

“Hey, no swiping,” Pasha joked back smiling at her.

[Audio: Hypnotic minimal techno beat pulsing]

Zhenya had her knees pulled up onto her chair, chin resting on them, eyes on a line of Python programming code that refused to behave. The Samaya AI restaurant recommendation chatbot kept insisting that a vegan in the Mission wanted khinkali, a beef dumpling. Was AI reading their preferences? She almost laughed and bit her lip. Roma would find that funny, he'd say the model had good instincts, everyone secretly wanted khinkali. She wanted to wow him with their progress when he got back!

She closed her eyes and could already hear their heavy industrial door sliding open. She pictured him stepping into the dark bedroom, dropping his leather duffel onto the floor, and ignoring the thousands of lines of code glowing across her dual monitors. He wouldn't care about the 90% accuracy score. He would just walk over, reach out, and gently press down the lid of her laptop until the room went dark.

She touched her lips. He’d scoop her straight out of her ergonomic desk chair before she could protest, pulling her into a tight, lifting hug. His wool coat would still be cold from the San Francisco fog outside, smelling of airport rain, leather, and clove tobacco. He only smoked on special occasions so after a successful business meeting she knew without a doubt he would smoke.

“Zhenechka,” he would murmur, his voice rough from the twenty hour flight, his hands cold against her cheeks as he lifted her out of her chair. “Step away from the machine before it eats your soul whole.”

Russian men worship their women and he liked to spoil her. He would have a warm paper bag from the Mission district tucked under his arm, smelling of grilled meat, cilantro, and hot foil, and a cold bottle of Fernet balanced in his back pocket. They would sit on the edge of the unmade platform bed in the dark, eating on the floor, listening to the rain hit the tall windows while he told her about the grey snow in Moscow. Sipping Fernet his breath would smell like peppermint and spices. A soft smile touched her lips at the thought. She thought about what it'd be like kissing him. Just twenty-four more hours, and he would be sitting right here on his side of the bed!

[Audio: Deep synthesizer bass drop]

She still felt him. He'd even told her jokingly if she missed him she could play his music. The music pumping through her ears was an obscure track from a subterranean club in Russia. Roma Markov had dragged her to that specific venue three years prior during a rain-drenched evening when she still worked as a cultural journalist. He had danced on a sticky wooden bench with a warm slice of cheese bread in his left hand, screaming the lyrics into the hazy air until his voice gave out, forcing her to sing with him.

A slight grin softened her lips at the recollection. Roma possessed a wild, chaotic spirit that complemented her structured, analytical mind. Even his text messages arrived with erratic syntax, missing capital letters, and misspelled words resulting from his mild dyslexia. He consistently wrote `hte` instead of *the*, and `jsut` instead of *just*. Those minor typographical quirks had become his personal signature across every messaging channel they shared.

Her phone buzzed against the table with team chatter. She ignored them and looked at a text from him, sent forty minutes ago that she was only now seeing:

Roma: hte investors want "engagement metrics" for Samaya. i told them Samayac's only metric is how many dumplings he can order before passing out. they did not laugh. davay, dinner sat? i make khachapuri, u bring wine

She typed back a single word, obviously, and went back to the broken model, smiling at her screen like an idiot.

[Sound: Metallic laptop fan spinning up]

She paused her cursor over a line of decision-tree logic. The conversational bot needed to sound approachable, like a knowledgeable local resident offering a dining recommendation, rather than a robotic database parser. She tweaked the semantic weight of casual modifiers within the natural language processing pipeline, attempting to inject a touch of warmth into the robotic dialogue. It sounded too cold.

Her secondary monitor flashed with a cascade of incoming alerts. The Telegram icon bounced continuously along the bottom dock, displaying a counter badge that rapidly climbed past fifty messages. She caught fleeting glimpses of Dima's messages regarding imported alcohol crates and party arrangements for their work visa celebration.

She chose to ignore notifications. Roma was scheduled to land at San Francisco International Airport the following evening following his mandatory visa appointment at the consulate. The entire circle of ex-pat friends had spent weeks coordinating a surprise homecoming event inside SoMa. He was the reason she made this startup. Before she met him she didn't even know what a startup was. He had inspired her so much! She planned to finish this algorithmic milestone first, allowing her to clear her evening schedule completely.

[Sound: Heavy wooden door creak in distance]

A breeze rustled the printed blueprints pinned to the exposed brick wall behind her desk. Across the open floor plan, Roma’s vacant workspace remained exactly as he had left it prior to him flying out. His dusty surfboard stood upright in the corner next to a stack of vintage vinyl records. A half-empty ceramic mug that read F*** MOSCOW sat atop his monitor stand. She smiled because he really had a love hate relationship with Moscow! Sometimes Russia could be down right oppressive but the club life felt more vibrant than San Francisco. Beside his coffee cup sat his notebook filled with handwritten notes about speculative physics and digital memory preservation. Her hand itched to go peak at his notes but she pinched her lip, don't get distracted. The goal is the prize, she reminded herself. Her eyes still wandered to a drawing of a beautiful tree with a digital sign in front of it.

Roma had spent his last week in SoMa obsessing over a radical startup concept regarding human mortality. He wanted to construct interactive software avatars capable of storing an individual's complete digital footprint, allowing grieving relatives to converse with simulated representations of departed loved ones. Their peers had dismissed the idea as a morbid distraction from commercial goals, yet Zhenya had listened patiently during their late-night kitchen debates while brewing herbal tea. She knew he was depressed but she didn't know what to think of his new project. She wanted to talk to him when he got back. She could barely wait.

She texted him, “You like surprises right?”
