Chapter 1 - Awakened to an Unaliving

Chapter 1 - Awakened to an Unaliving

Her throat is sore and dry. Her tongue felt as if it was a balloon that was constantly being filled to restrict her breath. Every lungful was like trying to squeeze a piece of cookie dough through a straw from her favorite milkshake at Redie’s. Pain thrumming in the back of her head beating upon her skull and infecting her nerve endings.

It’s enough to make her wanna cry as it grows more powerful.

She knows she must’ve partied too hard last night celebrating her hometowns victory in the team trial for Karate championship for her country. A good friend of hers actually one them the match and to that since she couldn’t be there for them she drank and partied congratulating them along with their other friends and her family that could not make it to her final match.

She rolls over groaning audibly not wanting to open her eyes. Yet, warmth. The warmth of another body plays across her skin as she moves over. And she freezes. Not because she was feeling another body. After a good bender it’s no surprise she’d be passed out with a friend who went shot for shot with her.

No she freezes because it’s with this skin to skin contact that her brain boots up and finally lets her know that she’s naked! Not just naked! But naked, naked next to someone else who is naked. Now, she knows she should get up and see who it is. She knows this like she knows she’s fucked if she slept with a close friend because could they move past it.

Shit! Some of them are dating each other. Did she accidentally fuck a friend that’s dating a friend. She most certainly has to open her eyes now. With a groan and slight prayer to any deity that may be listening she opens her eyes.

The room is dark. But, outside lights from the city illuminated the room enough for her to see the person or at least the back of the person laying next to her. A woman. She sighs in relief because none of her female friends that swing her way were dating anyone. They would just have to deal with the uncomfortable knowledge of having had a one-night stand with a friend.

There will be no second, third, fourth or fifth time. Because she cannot date her friends. They can be so exhausting.

She looks around the room at this thought and paused.

’Now wait a minute!’ she exclaim to herself as she realizes that the room she is in was very much so unfamiliar.

It looks like the type of place that would take months maybe years of her savings to be able rent comfortably never mind own. The ceiling was unnecessarily high with what appears to be a chandelier like fixture above it. Light from outside glitters across the elegantly cut prisms.

She stumble stands with her hands out doing her best not slip on the clothes strewn about on the floor.

Squish!

“Gross, gross, gross,” she mutters to herself at the feel of something stick and squishy like that of a water balloon leaking.

Her eyes of course need to look down. Gosh darn it! A used condom. Ew! She looks to the bad now to see what appears to be a feminine form. Okay so was there a guy was it a threesome.

And what’s that smell. It’s almost intoxicatingly sweet. Coming from the woman on the bed. Her mouth starts to water and her teeth felt jittery like they were thrumming. That same feeling one gets when their craving a juicy burger or steak. But, the woman was the meat.

She swallows and steps back trying to figure out what’s going on. The smell it was infecting her arousing her. ‘Brianna Reed you have got to get away from this woman,’ she thinks to herself.

She stumbles out of the room away from the smell. As soon as she hits the door she inhales. Fresh air. Gulping it down like a fish in too hot water drowning from too much oxygen. She shuts the door behind happy that it blocks the smell.

With her back to the door she slides down it trying to think. How did she get here. Where was she. This was definitely a suite of some kind in a hotel or some type of upscale condo. From the elaborate murals on the walls to the plush carpet on the floor nothing seemed to be inexpensive. Her barely middle class mind was running. Who was that woman. Where’s the guy. How the hell did she get inside this place.

She couldn’t remember leaving her house after watching the tournament. Her last memory was sending out the sober and getting blankets for her fellow drunks before collapsing in her bed. She smacks her face hoping it is but a dream. When it’s not she decides to get some clothes and leave before someone comes.

However, something stops her. The smell from the room becomes even more powerful. Almost like a siren’s song that had a fragrance that was both calling and wanting. Then there is a wrinkle in it. Her nose twitches. Despair. That’s what it smells like. Cold and damp like the aftermath of a tropical storm that swept the land and left death in its wake.

And yet still the smell of that woman in that bed drew the out of place woman to her. As if she was a wind that was turning into a cyclone that pulled her in. Magnetism.

Creak!

The door opens slowly.

“Ah!” A gasp is heard from the bed. The woman on the bed scrambles. Her eyes meet Brianna’s and she screams. Ear shattering is what the sound was.

Almost took her to her knees. And that damn smell got stronger. Distress. Despair. And fear. Poignant at that. It almost causes collapse in her. She stands strong.

My Second Chance

kitkatbar29: So this first book in this series I liked. A good plot that flowed well for the most part with some twists along the way, good well developed characters... there are a few technical mistakes, but nothing to harsh. I must say toward the end of the book there were some issues with like a quick change ...

Loved, Loudly

Merrell Bunting: Well written, kind of quiet story, I enjoyed it. I am still a bit perplexed over whether this was a second chance mating story with choosing or completely a chosen mate story. If it is a chosen mate tale it leaves one a bit worried about a fated mate showing up. Either way it was a nice read.

Asm272: This has been a delight to read. Such a well crafted story. Not a single word wasted, while it might be shorter than some, it does not lack emotion, excitement, romance, or humor. I am looking forward to reading the others in this series.
