Chapter 1
The Moon Bay Chronicles
Chapter One: The Secret She Never Knew
Long before Rhaenara Mooncrest ever stepped through the gates of Moonveil Academy, there was a secret hidden beneath the moon.
A secret that had been passed from mother to daughter.
A secret that would change the magical world forever.
And it began on the night Rhaenara was born.
The sky above Moon Bay was covered in dark clouds. The moon had disappeared behind them, and the ocean below the cliffs crashed violently against the rocks.
Inside a small chamber overlooking the sea, a woman lay exhausted after giving birth.
Her name was Elara.
But Elara was not an ordinary witch.
She was the Dragon Queen.
For centuries, the Dragon Queen had been the guardian of the magical realms. She could communicate with dragons, command ancient magic, and summon a power that had not been seen anywhere else in the magical world.
But Elara knew her time was coming to an end.
Beside her stood her husband, Adrian, holding their newborn daughter.
The baby was tiny and peaceful, completely unaware of the storm outside.
Adrian looked down at her.
“Rhaenara,” he whispered.
Elara smiled weakly.
“Rhaenara…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“She has to live.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What are you talking about?”
“You know what I am.”
He didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
The Dragon Queen's power could not simply disappear when its bearer died.
It needed a new home.
And Elara had chosen hers.
Her daughter.
A faint purple glow appeared around Elara's hands.
Adrian's eyes widened.
“Elara, no…”
“I have no choice.”
The glow became brighter.
The room trembled.
Far away, hidden in the mountains, dragons suddenly lifted their heads.
One by one, they felt it.
The power of the Dragon Queen was moving.
Elara reached toward her daughter.
The purple light slowly traveled from her hands toward the baby.
Rhaenara stirred.
For one brief moment, her eyes opened.
They shimmered with a strange purple light.
Then they closed again.
The magic disappeared.
Elara smiled.
“She'll never know,” she whispered.
Adrian's heart broke.
“Maybe she should.”
“No.”
Elara looked at him seriously.
“If she discovers what she carries before she's ready, the people who want the Dragon Queen's power will come for her.”
Adrian nodded slowly.
He understood.
Rhaenara would have to grow up believing she was ordinary.
Just a witch.
Just a student.
Just a girl.
Elara reached for her daughter's tiny hand.
“Protect her.”
“I will.”
“And when the time comes…”
She paused.
“Tell her who she really is.”
Those were Elara's final words.
By morning, the Dragon Queen was gone.
But her power lived on.
Inside her daughter.

Fifteen Years Later
“RHAENARA!”
Rhaenara Mooncrest nearly fell out of bed.
“What?!”
She sat up, her dark hair falling across her face.
Standing in the doorway was Mirella, her best friend.
Marella was already dressed for school, her bag hanging over one shoulder.
She was the kind of person who was always ready before everyone else—and always annoyed when Rhaenara wasn't.
“You're going to be late,” Mirella said.
Rhaenara blinked sleepily.
“Late for what?”
Mirella stared at her.
“The first day of term!”
Rhaenara looked at the clock.
Her eyes widened.
“Oh no!”
She jumped out of bed.
“I forgot!”
“You always forget.”
“I do not!”
“You do.”
Rhaenara grabbed her uniform.
“You could at least help me instead of standing there laughing.”
Mirella laughed.
“Fine. But you're buying me breakfast.”
Rhaenara smiled.
“Deal.”
The two girls had been best friends for years.
Mirella knew almost everything about Rhaenara.
Her favorite spells.
Her annoying habits.
Her fear of thunderstorms.
The fact that she always stayed awake too late reading.
But there was one thing Mirella didn't know.
Something even Rhaenara herself didn't know.
The truth about who she really was.
Today was the first day of term at Moonveil Academy, the largest magical school in the entire realm.
It wasn't just a school for witches.
Witches studied there.
Wizards.
Fairies.
Elves.
Shape-shifters.
Merfolk.
Magical creatures.
Almost every kind of magical being had a place at Moonveil.
Rhaenara had attended the academy for years.
And as far as she knew, she was completely ordinary.
She could perform simple spells.
She could levitate small objects.
She could make candles light themselves.
Nothing unusual.
Nothing powerful.
At least, that's what she believed.
Downstairs, her father waited for her.
Adrian watched his daughter hurry into the room.
For a moment, he saw another face.
Elara.
His wife's eyes.
Her smile.
The Dragon Queen.
But Rhaenara didn't notice the sadness in his expression.
“Ready?” he asked.
“Almost!”
She grabbed her bag.
Mirella appeared behind her.
“Come on. We're going to miss the carriage.”
Rhaenara laughed.
“I'm coming!”
The two girls hurried outside.
Neither noticed the tiny purple glow that briefly appeared beneath Rhaenara's sleeve.
Neither noticed the distant roar that echoed from the mountains.
And neither knew that, far beyond Moon Bay, an ancient dragon had just awakened.
It lifted its enormous head toward the sky.
Its golden eyes glowed.
The dragon whispered one word.
“Queen.”
And somewhere inside Moonveil Academy, an ancient magical book opened by itself.
Its pages turned.
Until they stopped at a single sentence:
THE DRAGON QUEEN HAS RETURNED.
But Rhaenara knew nothing about it.
Not yet.
