Volume 2 for 4 Nights Cruise

Résumé

In the wake of four sun drenched nights at sea, the illusion of paradise shatters the moment Sam Hawkins steps off the cruise gangway and onto Florida soil. What was supposed to be a temporary indulgence a secret, feverish slip into the forbidden with his step-niece, Sierra—was meant to stay anchored in international waters. They had a plan: face his brother Mark, tell her fragile mother Evelyn the truth, and stop hiding in the shadows. But the estate isn't empty. Waiting in the living room is Julian—Sierra’s wealthy, immaculate ex-boyfriend, whose family owns the local private hospital and whose influence just saved Evelyn’s life. Suddenly, the truth is a weapon that could destroy everyone Sam is trying to protect, and Sierra’s desperate plea for silence pulls the rug right out from under him. Forced to play the role of a cold, indifferent stranger while Julian reclines in the guest room and stakes his claim, Sam is dragged into a quiet, suffocating hell where every polite dinner conversation feels like a slow execution. When family obligations, medical debts, and corporate leverage threaten to push Sierra back into her ex’s arms, the pretense of restraint completely incinerates. Driven by a dark, possessive jealousy he can no longer tame, Sam refuses to let her go. What begins as brief, agonizing touches under the breakfast table quickly devolves into midnight intrusions, reckless encounters in locked pantries, and desperate late-night calls that leave both of them unraveled. Trapped between a mother’s fragile heart, a brother’s collapsing business, and a bond forged in the dark, Sierra is forced to choose between the respectable life laid out for her and the dangerous, addictive man who won't let her breathe. In this razor-sharp continuation of Stuffed on the Ship, the line between protection and obsession blurs, proving that four nights of passion were never going to be enough and that some secrets burn far too hot to stay buried.

Chapter 1

The heavy oak front door of the Hawkins estate swung open, releasing the familiar scent of lemon wax, stale jasmine, and old money into the humid afternoon air.

Sam set Sierra’s leather weekender on the foyer tile. The leather was still warm from the trunk of his car. His knuckles brushed against her wrist as he stood straight, feeling the sudden, rigid snap of her posture beside him.

"They’re in the sunroom," Sierra whispered.

She didn't look at him. Her eyes were fixed on the silver shoehorn sitting in the marble tray by the coat rack. A small detail. A sign of life.

Sam adjusted the cuff of his linen shirt, the fabric dry and stiff against his skin. Four days on the water had softened the edges between them, but the solid floor under his boots felt heavy. Permanent. He reached down, his thumb finding the small curve of her waist, anchoring her before they took a step toward his brother's voice.

"We just lay it out," Sam said, his voice a low scrape in his throat. "Five minutes. No games."

"Sam, wait."

She caught his sleeve. Her fingernails pressed hard into the cotton, digging into the skin of his forearm. Her pulse was visible at the hollow of her throat, a rapid beat under smooth, golden skin.

"I mean it," he muttered. "I'm not doing the quiet routine."

A laugh cut through the quiet hallway. Bright. Polished. Rich.

It didn't belong to Mark.

Sierra’s hand froze against Sam’s arm. Her fingers slacked, sliding off the fabric.

Sam moved first. He turned the corner into the living room, his boots catching on the edge of the Persian rug. The room smelled of fresh lily blooms and damp earth from the patio.

Mark sat in his usual leather armchair, a glass of dark scotch resting on his knee. Opposite him, stretched out on the velvet sofa like he owned the frame, was Julian.

Julian’s Italian leather loafers rested ankle-over-knee. He wore a crisp white Oxford shirt, the top two buttons undone, revealing a tanned collarbone. In his hand, he held a china teacup, the delicate spoon clinking against the rim with a sharp, rhythmic tone.

"Look who finally made port," Mark said, pushing himself up from the chair. His knees gave an audible crack. "We were about to send out a search party."

Mark stepped forward, throwing an arm around Sam’s shoulders. The grip was heavy, smelled of cigars and cedar cologne. He clapped Sam on the chest before turning his eyes to Sierra.

"Your mother’s resting," Mark said to her, his voice dropping an octave, thick with relief. "The surgeon just left twenty minutes ago. Julian brought him over personally."

Julian set the teacup down on the glass coffee table. The porcelain clicked against the glass. He stood up slowly, smooth, unhurried, tall enough to look Sam straight in the eye without tilting his chin.

"Sierra," Julian said.

Her name sounded different coming out of Julian's mouth. Smooth. Practiced. Like something he owned.

Sierra didn't move from the threshold. Her shoes were silent on the rug. "What are you doing here, Julian?"

"Helping," Julian said simply. He stepped around the table, his eyes tracking every inch of her face. "Your mother called me from the ER three nights ago. She was terrified. The local staff was going to push the gallbladder surgery to the morning, but my father cleared an OR at St. Jude's within forty minutes."

He stopped two feet in front of her. Close. Too close.

"She’s fine now," Julian added, his voice soft, dropping into a tone that excluded everyone else in the room. "I made sure she got the private suite on the fourth floor. The one with the garden view."

Sierra took a small step back, her heel catching the edge of the floorboards. "You didn't have to do that."

"Of course I did." Julian smiled. A small, easy curve of his mouth. "She's family, Sierra. Always has been."

From the sofa, Mark let out a breathy sigh, rubbing the back of his neck. "Kid saved us a massive headache, Sam. Evelyn was crying when they prepped her. Julian stayed in the waiting room until two in the morning."

Sam felt his jaw lock. The joint clicked behind his ear. His palms were dry, the itch of old adrenaline creeping under his collar. He looked at Julian's hands. Clean nails. A platinum watch resting against a smooth wrist.

"We had it covered," Sam said. The words came out flat. Cold.

Julian turned his head toward Sam, his expression mild, polite, completely unimpressed. "With all due respect, Sam, you were three hundred miles out at sea. Mark was losing his mind trying to coordinate the paperwork. The system takes forever unless you know who to call."

"Julian practically lived at the hospital for three days," a weak voice called out from the hallway.

Evelyn stood by the doorway, leaning heavily on a wooden cane. Her face was pale, thin shadows hanging beneath her eyes, but her hair was brushed back into a tight bun. She wore a silk robe wrapped over her hospital gown.

"Mom," Sierra breathed, rushing forward to take her arm. "You shouldn't be standing up."

"I'm fine," Evelyn snapped softly, though her weight sank into Sierra's shoulder. She patted Sierra’s cheek with a trembling, cold hand. "Julian got me the best chief of surgery in the state. He brought me real soup this morning. Not that hospital slush."

Evelyn looked over Sierra’s head, her eyes locking onto Julian with bright, desperate affection.

"He's been an angel," Evelyn said. "Absolute angel."

Julian stepped in, smoothly sliding his arm around Evelyn’s waist to take the strain off Sierra. His fingers brushed against Sierra's shoulder as he transferred her mother's weight to himself. Sierra didn't pull away immediately. She looked at Julian's hand on her mother's side, her teeth pressing into her lower lip until the skin turned white.

"Let's get you back to the bed, Evelyn," Julian murmured. "You're supposed to be resting."

"See?" Evelyn smiled up at him, her pale lips stretching over white teeth. "He doesn't let me get away with anything."

Sam stood completely still in the center of the room. The space between his ribs felt tight, like a heavy belt pulled one notch too far. He looked at Sierra. Her eyes darted to him for a fraction of a second—a fast, desperate flicker—before she turned her back to follow Julian down the hall toward the master bedroom.

Mark clapped Sam on the shoulder again, hard this time.

"Hell of a guy," Mark muttered, watching Julian guide Evelyn down the corridor. "Don't know what we would've done without him this week. Honestly."

Mark walked back to his scotch, picked up the glass, and took a long swallow. Ice clinked against the amber liquid.

"How was the cruise?" Mark asked, not looking back. "Quiet?"

Sam reached into his pocket, his thumb running along the sharp edge of his car keys. The metal dug into his skin, leaving a deep, dented line in the tissue.

"Quiet," Sam said.
