The Devil's Whisper
In the small village of Bellwood, there was an old forest that everyone feared.
People said no one should enter after sunset because something evil lived deep among the trees. Some called it a demon. Others called it the devil.
Seventeen-year-old Elena did not believe the stories.
One evening, while walking home from her friend's house, Elena heard someone whisper her name.
“Elena…”
She stopped.
The road was empty.
“Elena…”
She turned around, but there was nobody there.
Then she noticed a tall man standing beneath an old tree. He wore a black coat, and his face was strangely pale.
“Are you lost?” he asked.
Elena stepped backward.
“No. I'm going home.”
The man smiled.
“I can help you get there faster.”
“I know the way.”
She turned to leave.
“Wait.”
His voice suddenly sounded different.
“You want something, don't you?”
Elena stopped.
Everyone had dreams. Elena's biggest dream was to help her sick mother and make sure they never struggled for money again.
“How do you know?” she asked.
The stranger smiled.
“I know many things.”
He reached into his coat and pulled out a small golden coin.
“Take this. Your troubles will disappear.”
Elena stared at the coin.
“What do you want in return?”
The man's smile became wider.
“Nothing today.”
That answer frightened her more than anything else.
She walked away without taking the coin.
That night, Elena couldn't sleep.
She kept thinking about the stranger.
The next morning, she discovered something strange.
A golden coin was lying beside her bed.
She picked it up and immediately dropped it.
She remembered the man's words.
“Nothing today.”
Elena ran to her mother.
“Mum, we need to leave this village.”
Her mother looked confused.
“Why?”
“I don't know. Something feels wrong.”
But before they could leave, a terrible storm began.
The sky became black.
The electricity went out.
Then someone knocked on the door.
Three slow knocks.
Elena froze.
Her mother opened the door.
Nobody was there.
Only a golden coin lay on the ground.
That night, Elena heard the whisper again.
“Elena…”
She followed the voice outside.
It led her toward the forest.
She knew she shouldn't go.
But something pulled her forward.
Deep inside the forest, she found the stranger standing beside an enormous black stone.
“You came,” he said.
“Who are you?”
He laughed softly.
“You already know.”
The wind suddenly became violent.
The trees shook.
The stranger's eyes turned completely black.
“I am the one your people fear.”
Elena's heart raced.
“The devil…”
“Yes.”
He stepped closer.
“I can give you everything you want. Money. Power. A perfect life for your mother.”
Elena looked at him.
“And what will it cost?”
“Your soul.”
Elena was terrified, but she remembered her mother's words from childhood:
Never accept a gift from someone who asks you to become someone you're not.
She shook her head.
“No.”
The devil's smile disappeared.
“You would choose poverty over your mother's life?”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“I would rather struggle honestly than receive something evil.”
The devil became angry.
“You think you can defeat me?”
“No,” Elena said. “But I don't have to fight you.”
She dropped the golden coin onto the ground.
“I only have to refuse you.”
Suddenly, the forest became silent.
A bright light appeared above Elena.
The devil screamed and stepped backward.
“You cannot reject me!”
Elena stood firmly.
“I just did.”
The light grew brighter.
The devil disappeared into the darkness, leaving only the golden coin behind.
Elena picked it up.
For a moment, she thought about keeping it.
Then she threw it into the river.
When Elena returned home, something wonderful had happened.
Her mother's illness had suddenly begun to improve.
Within weeks, she became strong enough to walk around the house again.
The people of Bellwood never understood what had happened that night.
But Elena knew.
She also learned something she would never forget:
Temptation often looks beautiful at first.
It promises easy answers, quick success, and everything you desire.
But sometimes the easiest road leads to the darkest place.
Years later, Elena became known throughout the village for helping people who were struggling.
Whenever someone asked her why she worked so hard, she would smile and say:
“Because anything worth having is worth earning honestly.”
And deep inside the forest, beneath the old tree, a faint whisper could sometimes still be heard.
“Elena…”
But she never answered.
Moral Lesson: Never allow greed, desperation, or temptation to make your choices for you. What looks like an easy solution can come with a terrible price. True strength comes from making the right choice, even when the wrong choice seems easier.
