Summary

Prólogo: La Tinta de los Mártires

Año del Señor de 1348. Monasterio de San Jerónimo, Francia.

La peste no llamaba a la puerta; ya estaba dentro. Fuera, entre la niebla amarilla que envolvía los campos de trigo muerto, las campanas de la aldea repicaban sin cesar, anunciando una muerte tras otra. Pero dentro del scriptorium, el silencio era aún más pesado. Fray Tomás estaba sentado frente al atril, con los dedos manchados de un rojo oscuro que no era tinta.

Había perdido la vista hacía tres días, cuando las sombras en las paredes del monasterio comenzaron a moverse solas. Ahora, sus ojos lechosos miraban la nada, pero sus manos se movían con una precisión frenética sobre el pergamino. No escribía con pluma, sino con la punta de un cuchillo bendito, trazando letras sobre su propia piel abierta y dejando que la sangre sirviera de tinta.

—No es el fin —susurró Tomás, su voz quebrada por la deshidratación y el miedo—. Es el medio.

El aire olía a ozono y a carne quemada, un aroma imposible en una iglesia de piedra fría. Las velas parpadeaban, aunque no había viento. En la pared frente a él, la sombra de un crucifijo se alargó, deformándose hasta parecer un par de alas rotas. Tomás sintió el calor. No era el calor del infierno, ni la luz del cielo. Era algo intermedio. Algo exiliado.

Escribió la última línea, temblando. La profecía no hablaba de salvación, hablaba de la grieta. Anunciaba el día en que los Cielos se abrirían como una herida infectada y los Infiernos bregarían por subir. Pero lo más terrible era la tercera verdad: los que caerían entre ambos, los mutilados, los que recordarían el dolor de ambas glorias.

—Que encuentren esto —rogó al vacío—. Que sepan que no hay bandos, solo hambre.

Tomás dejó caer el cuchillo. El metal sonó como un trueno en la habitación. Sabía que venían por él. No los demonios de cuernos, ni los ángeles de luz. Venían los silenciosos. Los que borran los errores. Se llevó el cuchillo al cuello no por desesperación, sino por estrategia. Su alma no podía ser tomada si el recipiente se rompía antes de tiempo.

Cuando los hermanos encontraron la puerta abierta al amanecer, el scriptorium estaba vacío. No había cuerpo, ni sangre, ni rastro de Fray Tomás. Solo quedaba el pergamino, húmedo y caliente, con las palabras aún goteando sobre la madera. Esa noche, el monasterio ardió sin causa aparente. Pero el libro sobrevivió. Oculto. Esperando.

El Velamento no estaba hecho para durar. Y cuando se rompa, la sangre será la única tinta válida.
