Time
Time. The ever present reminder of our own mortality. And worse, the visual reminder on all of our forearms of our soulmates mortality too.
No one really knows how it works. People pretend to, throwing around technical jargon to sound big and important but I can guarantee you that, just like someone who laughs at a joke they don't get, if you call them out they won't have a thing to say.
We're just born like this. We each have a clock that ticks down the seconds, minutes, hours, of our soulmates life. It's terrifying. If we don't find them, we're haunted by the possibility and the lost opportunity. If we do... that's a very different form of torture. We get to watch as our time together slowly runs out, both of us knowing how little time the other has.
Sometimes, people think they've found their soulmate, only to find that they were wrong, when the person dies too soon or too late. Sometimes, people have more than one soulmate.
That's very rare though. Only a few people ever get two soulmates. Some people don't have any.
These are some of my favorite stories. I've traveled around, collecting peoples happiness and heartbreak and maybe, I'll even share my own.
