Chapter 1: The Boy Who Chased the Horizon

THE LAST COMPASS

Chapter 1: The Boy Who Chased the Horizon

The sea had always called his name.

Kairo Venn just hadn’t figured out what it wanted from him.

Every morning, before the sun climbed above the cliffs of Mira Cove, the fourteen-year-old boy would sit at the highest point of the island and stare at the horizon.

Beyond it were hundreds of islands.

Beyond those islands was the Grand Sea.

And somewhere beyond the Grand Sea, according to every old sailor’s tale, was the greatest treasure ever hidden.

The Heart of Dawn.

Kairo had heard the story so many times that he could repeat every word.

A treasure created during the Age of Kings.

A treasure powerful enough to change the world.

A treasure that had disappeared after its mysterious creator vanished.

Thousands had searched for it.

Pirates.

Kings.

Explorers.

None had succeeded.

But Kairo believed he would.

He stood on the cliff, his red scarf whipping around his neck as the morning wind rushed past him.

“One day,” he said, pointing toward the horizon, “I’m going to find it.”

A voice came from behind him.

“You’re going to fall first.”

Kairo jumped.

His grandfather stood several steps away, carrying a basket of fish.

Kairo turned around.

“Grandpa! You scared me!”

“Good. Maybe you’ll finally stop standing on cliffs.”

Kairo laughed and climbed down.

His grandfather, Orin Venn, was the oldest sailor in Mira Cove. His back was bent from years at sea, and a long scar crossed his left eyebrow.

But there was one thing nobody in the village knew about him.

Orin had once been a pirate.

Kairo knew.

He just didn’t know why his grandfather had abandoned the sea.

“You’re thinking about leaving again, aren’t you?” Orin asked.

Kairo looked away.

“Maybe.”

“Maybe?”

“Definitely.”

Orin sighed.

“You’re fourteen.”

“So?”

“So you don’t know anything about the ocean.”

“I know enough.”

“You can’t swim.”

Kairo paused.

“That is a temporary problem.”

“You get seasick.”

“Also temporary.”

“You crashed three fishing boats last year.”

“Those boats were already old.”

Orin stared at him.

Kairo smiled nervously.

“Okay. Two were old.”

His grandfather shook his head.

Then his expression changed.

For just a moment, Kairo saw something strange in his eyes.

Fear.

“Listen to me,” Orin said quietly. “There are things beyond this island that you aren’t ready to face.”

Kairo’s smile disappeared.

“What things?”

Orin looked toward the sea.

“Pirates.”

“I want to become one.”

“Not the kind you’re imagining.”

Before Kairo could ask another question, a bell rang from the village.

Once.

Twice.

Then again.

The warning bell.

Orin dropped the basket.

Kairo looked toward the harbor.

Black smoke was rising above the rooftops.

“What happened?”

Orin’s face went pale.

“Go home.”

“But—”

“NOW!”

Kairo had never heard his grandfather shout like that.

He ran.

The village was in chaos.

People were fleeing toward the hills while fishermen dragged their families away from the harbor.

Then Kairo saw the ship.

It was enormous.

Its black sails stretched across the sky like wings.

A broken crown was painted across its main sail.

The Gravewind.

Every sailor on the island knew that name.

Captain Darius Vane.

The pirate who had conquered three islands.

The pirate who had disappeared from the Grand Sea five years ago.

The pirate who was supposed to be dead.

Kairo watched as the ship entered the harbor.

A tall man stepped onto the dock.

He wore a long black coat and carried a curved sword at his side.

His eyes moved across the village.

Then stopped.

On Kairo’s grandfather.

Darius smiled.

“Well, well.”

Orin stepped forward.

“Darius.”

Kairo froze.

They knew each other.

Darius walked closer.

“You’ve gotten old.”

“And you’re still a fool.”

Darius laughed.

“I came for something that belongs to me.”

“You have nothing here.”

Darius’s smile vanished.

“The compass.”

Kairo looked at his grandfather.

“What compass?”

Orin said nothing.

Darius raised one hand.

Several pirates surrounded the villagers.

“Search every house.”

Kairo’s heart began pounding.

He didn’t understand what was happening.

But he understood one thing.

His grandfather was hiding something.

Kairo followed Orin as he hurried toward their house.

“Grandpa!”

“Not now.”

“What compass is he talking about?”

“Keep your voice down.”

“You know him!”

Orin stopped.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he opened an old wooden chest beneath the floor.

Inside was a small silver object.

A compass.

But it looked nothing like an ordinary compass.

There was no north, south, east, or west.

Instead, its needle pointed directly toward Kairo.

“What is that?” Kairo whispered.

Orin picked it up.

“This belonged to your mother.”

Kairo’s breath caught.

His mother was the one subject his grandfather never discussed.

She had disappeared when Kairo was five.

Along with his father.

“Why does Darius want it?”

“Because he knows what it is.”

“And you don’t?”

Orin looked into his eyes.

“I know exactly what it is.”

A loud crash shook the house.

The front door exploded inward.

Pirates entered.

Orin pushed Kairo behind him.

“Run.”

“No.”

“Kairo!”

“I’m not leaving you.”

Darius entered through the broken doorway.

His eyes immediately fell upon the compass.

“So it survived.”

Orin tightened his grip.

“You’ll never have it.”

Darius drew his sword.

“Then I’ll take it.”

Kairo stepped forward.

His hands were shaking.

But he raised his fists anyway.

Darius looked at him.

“Who’s this?”

“My grandson.”

Darius stared at Kairo for several seconds.

Then his eyes widened.

“The boy?”

Orin’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.”

Darius smiled.

“So that’s why you hid him.”

Kairo looked between them.

“What are you talking about?”

Nobody answered.

Then the compass began glowing.

A strange symbol appeared beneath its glass.

Kairo felt a sudden warmth in his chest.

The needle spun wildly.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then it stopped.

Not toward north.

Not toward the sea.

Toward Kairo.

The entire room fell silent.

Darius whispered:

“The Last Compass has chosen its captain.”

Kairo stared at the strange object.

Outside, thunder exploded across the sky.

The sea began to rise.

And far beyond Mira Cove, something enormous moved beneath the waves.

Kairo looked at his grandfather.

“What does he mean?”

Orin closed his eyes.

Then he whispered the words Kairo had spent his entire life waiting to hear.

“Your parents didn’t disappear.”

Kairo’s heart stopped.

“They were searching for the Heart of Dawn.”

Another explosion shook the village.

Orin placed the compass into Kairo’s hand.

“And now,” he said, “they’re coming for you.”

The compass flashed.

A map appeared beneath its glass.

Seven symbols appeared across the endless ocean.

Kairo stared at them.

His fear slowly turned into a smile.

For the first time, the horizon didn’t look impossibly far away.

It looked like an invitation.

He tightened his red scarf.

“Then I’ll go.”

Orin looked at him.

“Go where?”

Kairo turned toward the burning harbor.

“Everywhere.”

And somewhere beneath the dark ocean, something ancient opened its eyes.
