----

Maeve stood by the window, her silhouette framed against the damp evening sky.

The rain had stopped just after sunset, leaving the narrow cobblestone alleyways below our second-floor balcony slick and reflective under the streetlamps of Bologna.

When she turned to face me, her smartphone was already in her hand, the screen lit up with the voice memo interface.

“You are going to put it in your own words. So that neither of us can ever pretend this conversation didn’t happen.”

I sat down slowly, the mattress giving way beneath my weight, my hands resting heavy on my knees. I looked up into her clear, dark eyes, searching for a trace of the warm, laughing woman I had married years ago, but found only a cold, unyielding mirror holding up my own betrayal.

She held the phone out between us, her thumb hovering over the red record button.

“Whenever you’re ready,” she whispered. “Say it clearly.”

She pressed the screen. The small red timer began to tick upward, capturing the heavy silence of the room before I finally forced my dry throat to open.

“I, Luca Moretti, living in Bologna, state this in front of my wife on 20 May 2022: from this day I will not look into Maeve’s private life. If she ever decides she wants an affair outside our marriage, I will not stand in the way of one such relationship.”

The small red light on her smartphone screen flickered twice and went out. Maeve tapped the screen to stop the recorder. The quiet that followed felt thick, filling the bedroom like heavy air before rain.

I sat on the edge of our bed, staring at the dark glass of her phone. My throat was dry. The sentence I had just spoken lingered in the space between us, turning over and over in my head.

“That’s enough,” she said. Her tone was flat, carrying neither victory nor satisfaction.

“Hmm.” It was the only sound I could squeeze past the tightness in my chest.

Maeve placed the phone carefully on the nightstand beside our bed. She turned her body toward me, resting her hands in her lap. Her dark eyes were completely clear, fixed on my face with an unnerving calm.

“Luca, saying the words is one thing,” she said, her voice measured and quiet. “Living with them is another. Do you really believe you can swallow this?”

The question settled heavily in the room. I looked down at my hands rested on my knees. The guilt that had been sitting in my stomach for months pressed down harder. Hearing my own voice surrender my rights as a husband was a quiet kind of pain, but it was a pain I had earned.

“Maeve… after what I did to you, this is the punishment I deserve,” I said. My voice sounded rough to my own ears, but every word was direct. “I’ll try.”

She looked at me without blinking. A faint shadow of sadness crossed her face, though her jaw remained set.

“Luca… God knows why I still love you this much,” she murmured, looking down at her intertwined fingers for a brief second before meeting my eyes again. “I’m not saying I will actually do anything. But some days the anger rises so fast I want to make you taste exactly what you gave me. I’m telling you again. I cannot promise I won’t. I only asked for this permission so that if it ever happens, I don’t have to carry it alone in my head.”

Her honesty felt like a sharp edge, but I knew I had no right to shield myself from it. I leaned over slightly and reached out, wrapping my arm around her waist. She did not stiffen, nor did she pull back.

“Your anger coming up from time to time is normal,” I said softly, drawing her closer until the side of her body pressed against mine. “I created this state in you. But I mean it when I say I regret it from the bottom of my heart.”

I pulled her fully against my chest. Maeve let out a long, slow breath and let her head sink onto my shoulder. The scent of her shampoo filled my lungs. Her body felt soft and warm against me, familiar in every detail, yet there was a clear boundary sitting quietly between us now.

“I love you, Luca,” she whispered into the fabric of my shirt.

“I love you, Maeve,” I answered, pressing my lips against the crown of her head.

We sat together on the edge of the mattress for a long time without speaking. Outside our window, the quiet sounds of evening traffic moved through the streets of Bologna. Downstairs, in my parents’ apartment on the first floor, we could hear the faint clatter of dinner plates being put away. Everything around us looked like a normal evening in a stable home.

Inside my head, however, a storm had already taken root. I had never imagined she would ask me to put such a vow on record. But my own appetite and carelessness had built the cage I was sitting in, and I knew I had handed her the key myself.

The person who had originally brought Maeve into my life was Leela.

Years before any of this broke apart, Leela and I had been close friends. We worked at the same firm in Bologna, sitting in adjacent departments. My position was slightly senior to hers, which meant we were often assigned to the same project committees.

We ate lunch together in the cafeteria, traded jokes about upper management, and talked about our weekends. There had never been a single spark of romantic tension between us back then. It was a clean, uncomplicated friendship built on shared routine.

Around the time Leela got married, Maeve was hired into her department.

I remember the exact morning Leela brought her over to my desk to introduce her. The moment I looked up from my computer screen and saw Maeve standing there, I felt completely finished.

She had a quiet, striking beauty that made the noisy office seem to fall silent. Her skin was clear, her features soft, and her demeanor had a gentle warmth that immediately drew people in.

Within a week, half the unmarried men in our department were finding excuses to walk past her desk.

A subtle competition began among the younger guys, but I held a distinct advantage: Leela.

Because Leela was already my close friend, she regularly included me in after-work drinks and coffee breaks with Maeve. My name went straight to the top of the list.

I had my own qualities to offer back then. I spent my weekends trekking through the trails of the Apennines, kept a sketchpad in my bag, and stayed in good physical shape. Maeve found those things appealing.

As she and I spent more time talking about art, outdoor routes, and our lives, Leela quietly stepped back and gave us space to grow closer.

Our connection deepened rapidly. Before I even had the chance to plan a formal proposal, Maeve beat me to it!

On a rain-swept afternoon near the Piazza Maggiore, she looked at me and asked if we should build a life together.

Both our families welcomed the union without hesitation. Her parents were warm and accepting, and my parents loved her instantly.

We had a large, beautiful wedding in Bologna, surrounded by friends and relatives. A few colleagues burned with mild envy, but mostly, people simply remarked on how well matched we were.

After the wedding, Maeve wanted to pursue further studies, so she resigned from her job. We packed our bags and spent two weeks on the Amalfi Coast.

Those nights in our hotel room overlooking the sea were spent wrapped up in each other, entirely drunk on our newfound marriage and physical closeness. When we returned to Bologna, that intensity did not fade.

After we settled back into our routine in Bologna, Maeve’s looks seemed to blossom even more. She possessed the kind of face and posture that drew eyes naturally. When she walked down the street, it was rare for men not to turn and take a second look.

While studying at the university, her appearance often led to misunderstandings. A couple of younger students even approached her on campus to ask her out, assuming she was unmarried. She came home those evenings and told me about it, looking slightly nervous about how I might react.

It never made me angry. I knew it was completely natural for men to be drawn to a striking woman. Someone asking a question did not alter the trust between us, and I explained that to her calmly. She appreciated my reaction, glad that I was not acting like a typical jealous husband.

Even before our wedding, I had made it clear that she was an equal partner, not someone who needed my permission to move through the world. We shared the household duties because the home belonged to both of us. Our chemistry remained strong, and people around us often commented on how well we fit together.

Within the next few years, Maeve gave birth to our son. She took time off work to care for him during those early years. Motherhood gave her an added radiance. Her skin looked clear, her figure retained its soft curves, and she moved with a quiet confidence.

When our son turned three, Maeve accepted a post as a university lecturer. By then, our family life had settled into a steady rhythm.

We lived in a traditional old palazzo near the city center. My parents stayed on the first floor, while Maeve, our son, and I had our life on the second floor. A quiet courtyard garden sat below with space for parking.

Maeve managed her days between her teaching duties, the house, and our child. Our son began attending school, and our routine ran smoothly. Yet, wherever we went, her presence continued to attract attention.
