Chapter 1 — Fragments of the Past**
Rain drummed against the streets of Lumnis, turning the cobblestones into gleaming mirrors where neon reflections danced. Elysia pulled her hood tighter and slipped through the crowded stalls of the black market, every sense alert. She was a memory thief, and tonight she wasn’t here for scraps she was hunting a rare prey.
A dusty shop at the end of a narrow alley caught her eye. Its window was cracked, veiled in cobwebs, but inside flickered a faint blue glow. Her heart skipped. She reached out, trembling fingers brushing against a sealed fragment marked with a crimson sigil. It pulsed gently, as if alive.
“What is this doing here…?” she whispered.
The moment her fingers closed around it, the fragment burst into blinding light. Elysia stumbled backward, splashing into a puddle, her vision swimming. When the light faded, she wasn’t quite sure she was still in the city.
A boy stood before her. Silver eyes, tousled dark hair, and an aura both familiar and strange. The world around him shimmered like shattered glass, fragments of memory floating in the air, swirling with a weight she couldn’t grasp.
“You shouldn’t have touched that, ” he said, his voice low but piercing, echoing from everywhere and nowhere at once.
Elysia blinked, trying to calm her racing heart. “Who… who are you?”
The boy didn’t answer. Instead, the fragments around him twisted, forming visions she couldn’t escape: a laughing girl she didn’t recognize, a corridor drowned in shadows, the whisper of a promise made long ago. Her head throbbed. The memory felt like hers, but she couldn’t place it.
Suddenly, she was back in the alley, soaked and shaking. The fragment pulsed faintly in her palm, the red seal blinking like a heartbeat.
A chill ran down her spine. She felt eyes on her. Slowly, she turned and saw a hooded figure perched on a rooftop. A smile crept across their face, sinister and patient.
“At last… you’ve found it, ” the figure murmured to the rain, their voice carried away by the storm.
Elysia swallowed hard. Her life had been nothing but survival, stealing scraps of memory for a few coins. But now she understood: she’d stumbled onto something far greater. Something that wouldn’t let her go.
Every memory has a price. And hers? It had just begun to be counted.
