Chapter 1: The Weight of Glass and Gold
The view from the sixty-fifth floor of the Sterling Tower offered an illusion of absolute control. Below, Manhattan was a grid of shimmering amber lights and crawling yellow taxis, bathed in the violet hues of an impending twilight.
Liam Sterling adjusted the silver cufflink at his wrist, his gaze fixed on the rising moon hanging low over the East River. It was two days past the full moon, but the phantom burn in his veins hadn’t entirely faded. Beneath the bespoke Italian wool suit and the polished exterior of the Sterling conglomerate’s heir, his skin hummed with a primal heat the quiet, dangerous rhythm of the beast pacing inside him.
“You’re staring at the horizon again, Liam,” a suave voice broke the silence.
Julian, his chief of staff and long-time beta, stepped into the expansive glass office, setting a leather-bound tablet on the mahogany desk. “The board meeting wrapped up five minutes ago. Your father expects you at the Moreau Gala by eight.”
Liam turned, letting out a measured breath. “The Moreau Gala. Remind me why we continue to play nice with a clan that spent the last half-century trying to undercut our shipping routes.”
“Because corporate diplomacy keeps the peace, and peace keeps our secret intact,” Julian replied, adjusting his glasses. “Besides, the old pact demands both bloodlines show face at the annual winter gala. Break the ritual, and the elders start asking questions neither family wants to answer.”
Liam took his jacket from the back of his chair and slid it on, feeling the subtle tension in his shoulders. The rivalry between the Sterlings and the Moreaus was as old as the city itself, woven deep into their corporate empires and sealed by an ancient werewolf covenant. They controlled finance and media, news and trade twins of power, separated by bad blood.
Across town, in the penthouse suite of the Moreau Estate, Isabella “Izzy” Moreau inspected her reflection in the full-length mirror.
The floor-length emerald silk dress clung to her frame, contrasting sharply with her dark hair and striking eyes. To the fashion world and the media elite, she was the fierce, unapologetic heiress of the Moreau luxury empire. But behind the sharp velvet and designer heels was a predator conditioned to hold her ground against any threat supernatural or human.
“You look stunning, Isabella,” her cousin Marcus said from the doorway, swirling a glass of scotch. “Though you look like you’re dressed for war, not a party.”
“With the Sterlings attending? It’s the same thing,” Izzy said smoothly, clasping a diamond choker around her neck. Her sharp senses caught the faint scent of ozone and pine lingering on Marcus; he had spent the afternoon running through the private woodland reserve up north. “Is Father coming?”
“He’s already there, smoothing over the board members. Liam Sterling will be attending as well. Word is he just closed the European tech merger.”
Izzy’s eyes narrowed slightly. Liam.
She knew him by reputation: brilliant, impossibly charismatic, and burdened with the weight of the Sterling empire. But more than that, she knew what he was. Underneath the tailored suits lay a rival predator, one whose presence always set her instincts on edge whenever their paths crossed.
“Let him enjoy his merger,” Izzy murmured, grabbing her clutch. “Tonight, we remind the city who really commands the spotlight.”
The Grand Ballroom at the Plaza was an explosion of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and whispering tycoons. Jazz floated over the hum of polite laughter, masking the underlying tension that always lingered when the two grand clans shared a room.
When Liam entered, the atmosphere shifted perceptibly. Whispers rippled through the crowd as he moved through the room with effortless grace, shaking hands with senators and CEOs while keeping his senses hyper-tuned to his surroundings.
Then, the air changed.
A faint scent crossed his senses wild jasmine and crisp winter rain. It was a scent that instantly spiked his pulse, calling to the wolf beneath his skin.
Liam paused, turning his head toward the grand staircase.
Isabella Moreau was gliding down the marble steps. She exuded power and elegance, her gaze scanning the room with deliberate calm until it locked directly onto his. For a heartbeat, the noise of the ballroom faded away. The predatory instinct deep within Liam’s chest reared its head, recognizing her power, her rivalry, and an undeniable, dangerous pull that had existed between them for years.
She reached the floor and cut through the crowd, making her way directly toward him.
“Liam,” she greeted, her voice a smooth, purring velvet that carried an edge of steel. “I hear congratulations are in order for the tech deal.”
“Isabella,” Liam replied, inclining his head slightly, a small, dangerous smile touching his lips. “I’d say I’m surprised to see you here, but we both know the Moreaus never miss a chance to mark their territory.”
“Someone has to keep the Sterlings from thinking they own the entire sky,” she countered softly, stepping close enough that only he could hear her next words over the music. “Control your beast tonight, Liam. The elders are watching.”
“My wolf is perfectly under control,” Liam said, his voice dropping an octave, his amber eyes flashing with a brief, hidden gleam. “Is yours?”
Before Izzy could respond, a sudden, jarring high-pitched tone pierced the ambient noise—a sound imperceptible to human ears, but like a blade to the hyper-sensitive hearing of a werewolf.
Izzy flinched slightly, her hand darting to Liam’s arm to balance herself. Liam’s eyes darkened as his head snapped toward the upper balcony.
Across the room, high above the oblivious socialites sipping champagne, a shadow moved against the velvet curtains of the VIP mezzanine. A figure clad in dark tactical gear leveled a silent, modified crossbow toward the center of the room aimed directly at the young heirs.
“Get down!” Liam barked, swinging his body around Izzy just as a silver-tipped bolt shattered the chandelier above them, plunging the grand ballroom into chaos.
The metallic tang of copper and ozone instantly cut through the fragrant perfume of the ballroom. Before the crowd could digest the falling bodies, a second silent projectile hissed through the air.
Liam didn’t think; his instincts took over. His vision spiked into hyper-focused gold as he lunged across the polished marble, shoving Isabella behind the shadow of a massive stone pillar. The silver-tipped bolt shattered against the stone where her head had been a millisecond prior, spraying sparks and a lethal mist of aerosolized wolfsbane into the air.
Izzy didn’t flinch or cower. Her emerald silk dress pooled at her bare feet as she kicked off her heels, her posture shifting in a heartbeat from high-society heiress to an apex predator evaluating her kill zone.
“I had that,” Izzy snapped, her voice dangerously cold as her pupils dilated, reflecting the flickering chandeliers.
“You were about to take silver to the sternum, Moreau,” Liam growled, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling register that vibrated deep in his chest.
“Arrogant Sterling,” she spat, though her eyes locked onto him with an electric, undeniable spark of unity forged in sudden violence.
For two centuries, their billionaire families, the Sterlings of global finance and the Moreaus of luxury media had waged a silent, bitter cold war across Manhattan’s boardrooms. They were taught to view each other as rivals, monsters wearing designer suits competing for absolute dominance over the city’s supernatural underworld. But in the span of a single heartbeat, the ancient rivalry evaporated under the immediate pressure of survival.
High above in the VIP rafters, a tall, shadowy figure stepped into the dim beam of a spotlight. Unlike the mercenary distraction on the floor, this figure moved with a chilling, deliberate grace. He wore a matte-black coat and held a heavy, custom-forged crossbow lined with polished silver.
The assassin didn’t aim at the panicked crowd or the fleeing elders. His dark, cold gaze locked strictly onto Liam and Isabella.
“Two bloodlines, one grave,” a raspy, synthesized voice echoed faintly over the chaotic screams of the ballroom.
Izzy reached into the hem of her gown, her fingers closing around the hilt of a hidden silver-alloy dagger. “He’s targeting the heirs. He isn’t here for our fathers’ money, Liam.”
“He’s here to exterminate our blood,” Liam agreed, his claws slightly extending from his fingertips as his Alpha aura flared, illuminating his eyes with a terrifying golden light.
The assassin raised his left arm, revealing a heavy iron gauntlet. Mounted upon it was a dark, mechanical device humming with a high-frequency vibration, a sound calibrated specifically to paralyze a werewolf’s nervous system.
Before Liam or Isabella could spring forward to strike, the assassin pressed his thumb against a glowing red trigger on his gauntlet.
A blinding flash of crimson light detonated across the vaulted ceiling, and a high-pitched, agonizing screech tore through the hall, hitting both Liam and Izzy like a physical sledgehammer.
As the world spun into red-tinted agony, Liam caught a glimpse of the emblem burned onto the assassin’s chest armor: a crescent moon pierced by three iron nails.
Then, the floor beneath them buckled, and the darkness took them both.
