Summary

Fenn Hale is eight years old and can already count the things his family doesn't have: a roof that holds through winter, grain enough to reach spring, and any coin that isn't owed to somebody else. His brother Alden went to the city first, bound to a forge for seven years. Fenn goes second, to an apothecary in Greenmount — room and board, seven years, no pay worth the name. Master Thorne takes boys who will never be fighters, and Fenn isn't one: slow with a weapon, slower with the Kindling, the first rung of the climb that other apprentices manage in a season. What he has is arithmetic, patience, and a good memory for price. By twelve he keeps the books for a shop that isn't his. Then he comes away with something he cannot account for — not bought, not earned, not made by any hand he can name — and learns he can grow what other men must dig for, and sell it without ever saying where it came from. It is enough to walk out of the back room. It is not enough to keep him safe, and the bill for climbing does not always land on the person doing the climbing. So: when a boy with no talent buys his family out with a secret, who ends up holding the debt? I wrote this for readers who want the ledger to balance in the end.

Chapter 1: Mortal Ascension: The Back Room

Chapter 1: Mortal Ascension: The Back Room

Mortal Ascension: The Back Room

Book One of the Ascension Cycle

Fenn Hale is eight years old, and he has already learned to count the things his family doesn't have: a roof that holds through winter, grain enough to reach spring, and any coin that isn't owed to somebody else.

His brother Alden went to the city first, bound to a forge for seven years, and every month a few crowns come home. Not enough to clear the debt. Enough to keep the door shut.

Alden asked, and his master asked a man he knew, and in time there was a place for Fenn at an apothecary in Greenmount: room and board, seven years, and no pay worth the name. He took it, because a boy who isn't quick had better be useful, and soon.

He isn't quick. Not with a weapon, though the shop drills every boy it takes, and not with the Kindling — the first rung of the climb, the one the other apprentices manage in a season and he manages in years. What he has is arithmetic, patience, and a good memory for what things cost, and he puts all three to work in the shop: reading labels, weighing doses, pricing a crate of roots three ways before a customer has finished complaining. By twelve he keeps the books for a shop that isn't his.

Then he comes away with something he cannot account for: not bought, not earned, not made by any hand he can name. It is his now, and nobody can tell him what it is.

He will learn to grow what other men must dig for, to brew from it what other men must buy, and to sell it without ever saying where it came from. From a back room in Greenmount he will climb as far as the Guild, then past it into one of the Orders, and from there into mountain country that has no particular use for a boy from a village nobody has heard of. He will pay for every circle he climbs, and some of the price will be paid by people who had no part in the choices that got him there.

He has told no one. Not Master Thorne, not his brother.

Fenn counts what his family doesn't have before he counts anything else, and he doesn't argue with the offer — he just makes himself useful. At twelve, holding something you can't explain and nobody to ask, what would you have done?

My Second Chance

kitkatbar29: So this first book in this series I liked. A good plot that flowed well for the most part with some twists along the way, good well developed characters... there are a few technical mistakes, but nothing to harsh. I must say toward the end of the book there were some issues with like a quick change ...

Kritta_820: I enjoyed the storyline immensely and felt that it devolved from the average "small puny female wolf finds a royal mate." Sometimes the jumps between scenes and plots jumped ahead a little too far for my taste. For example when MC heard the update about her first mate the book suddenly changed to th...

hazel_walker: Okay, this chapter was WILD 😭 The whole werewolf system, the FBIDWC, the discrimination, and the fact that Sylvia has been keeping Collin and Dylan’s situation a secret all came together so well.
